Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on September 20th, 2010

When it comes to rear seat entertainment there are a lot of vehicles on the road that have TVs and movie players for kids and adults to watch on longer trips. Watching DVDs can be a bit boring after a while though and in most cars, you are out of luck.

BMW has unveiled at the Paris Motor Show new factory iPad docks for the rear seat passengers. The dock is very nice looking and integrated well into the design of the car. Some aftermarket docks just don’t look good.

Gorilla Glass coming to HDTV market to protect against Wii Remotes

Posted in Home Theater by Shane McGlaun on August 2nd, 2010

Corning has been offering Gorilla Glass for years but the stuff has only become common in the mobile market over the last few years. We typically see Gorilla Glass used for smartphone screens like the iPhone 4.

Corning has announced that starting next year Gorilla Glass will find a new market. The glass will be used to protect HDTVs from scratches and breakage. This is great news for Wii players who won’t have to worry as much about killing the TV.

iPhone 4 Cases in Crocodile Skin and White Gold

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on July 11th, 2010

Forget fancy Swarovski studded iPhone cases. Crocodile skin with white gold is the way to go. Or maybe a Stingray polished or python skinned iPhone 4 case? Apparently each of these is available from a site called MJ Apple iPhone Limited Edition.

Yes, that name sounds pretty shady. But if this is your sort of thing, these are all limited editions. Apparently they ship from Russia and you will have to email or call to ask about price and availability, so you know it’s expensive.

Gresso iPhone 4 with wood veneer

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on June 30th, 2010

From the front it looks like a plain old iPhone 4, but around back this iPhone is sporting some wood. This beautiful specimen comes from Russian technology company Gresso. There are embedded Swarovski crystals and an 18-karat golden Apple logo set in a sheet of African Blackwood.

While we loath Swarovski crystals on gadgets, this design is much more tasteful than the solid gold iPhones we are used to seeing. This luxury phone will arrive in December for $3,500, or $3,000 for the male version on the right.

Some apps blocked, throttled on 3G iPad

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on May 2nd, 2010

Looks like certain iPad apps are dramatically scaling back or even blocking the video altogether when on the 3G-ready iPad, according to some new owners. The YouTube app significantly degrades the quality of video, while ABC’s TV viewer doesn’t allow video at all unless via Wi-Fi. Only a few apps, such as Netflix, appear to work normally.

It was suspected that AT&T had demanded the limits, but an AT&T representative has denied the carrier’s involvement. Apparently the policies are so far self-imposed. ABC is allegedly prevented from streaming over 3G due to rights issues, while YouTube is most likely emulating the same bitrate scaling seen on the iPhone, with the larger screen size magnifying the drops in quality.

Pioneer readies three 7.1 receivers with iPhone control

Posted in Receivers by Conner Flynn on March 26th, 2010

Pioneer’s VSX-920-K, VSX-1020-K and VSX-1120-K 7.1-channel systems for the iPhone and iPod are being readied for their release this May and June. All come with a compatible USB port which will play Apple devices and charge them.

The 1020-K and 1120-K come with support for the iControlAV app (available for free in the App Store) which will steer the receivers, including multiple audio or video zones, balance tuning and input selection. Aside from that, all three feature an iPhone Control button which offers control on the touchscreen display instead of the receiver.

Apple sues HTC over 20 patents

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on March 2nd, 2010

Apple has announced that it is filing a lawsuit against HTC over the alleged infringement of about 20 patents that cover critical aspects of touch phones, like hardware, software and touch-display control. Some question whether the lawsuit is actually meant to send Google a message. But maybe it’s against the entire smartphone industry and it’s just Apple showing their teeth.

Apple should probably be more worried about Microsoft and its Windows Phone 7 Series since it has such a nice user interface and all. Basically it’s just business as usual as everybody tries to gain some breathing room in this turf war.

Louis Vuitton Asus Eee PC

Posted in Netbook by Conner Flynn on January 28th, 2010

Nothing says gaudy like slapping an overpriced brand on your Asus Eee PC. That’s just what has happened here with this netbook for fashionistas who love to throw money away. This Asus Eee PC 1101HA has had its exterior covered in leather that bears the famous Louis Vuitton pattern.

It was specially commissioned by a saddler, and aside from the exterior, everything else remains the same. It’s no iPhone Supreme and at least it isn’t covered in Swarovski crystals. You just have to wonder about some peoples taste.

The ZAGGbox is packed with connectivity for connecting to local TVs. It is also designed to stream media to smartphones via UPnP, video Podcasting or a built-in web server. The device will launch along with an iPhone app as well for streaming content.
