iPhone 5 could be a bigger upgrade than expected

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on August 2nd, 2011

The iPhone upgrade coming this fall “could be a bigger upgrade than we expected,” according to Sterne Agee’s Shaw Wu. The analyst cites Apple’s supply chain, which indicates that the new model will feature a display “slightly larger” than the 3.5-inch size Apple has used since the first iPhone. That would be great news.

He says that the phone should “retain a similar form factor and size but with thinner bezel,”. The info suggests a 2011 iPhone will in all likelihood forego 4G (LTE). And problems are said to remain with battery life and “spotty” network coverage. Of course Apple is good at tackling problems like this.

Apparently the device is making the rounds at Sprint’s research and development department. Sources also say that talk of a 4G variant of the iPhone for Sprint is coming along, but the first generation Sprint iPhone that is currently in testing does not feature support for 4G bands.

Android finally gets Netflix app, for five devices

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on May 12th, 2011

Netflix finally has an Android app that is publicly available. The app is pretty identical to the one released for the iPhone and it lets users manage their instant queue and watch videos. Of course to use it you need a subscription starting from $8.

Thing is, only a handful of phones can use the Netflix app, all of which are using Snapdragon processors. These first five include the Samsung Nexus S and four HTC phones, including the Evo 4G, the original Incredible, the Nexus One, and the T-Mobile G2. The Droid Incredible 2 and Thunderbolt, weren’t mentioned, though they have also have Snapdragon.

HP Veer 4G shown in white

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on May 1st, 2011

The HP Veer 4G, a.k.a. the Palm Veer, will be coming to AT&T in white. White is in right now for phones thanks to the trendsetting white iPhone. Until now, we’ve only seen the Veer in all black and this would be the first white webOS device ever.

The Veer features an 800MHz processor and a 2.6-inch, 400 x 320 resolution screen. It will officially launch early next week. We aren’t sure which version of webOS Veer will be running. Some say 2.2, others 2.1, maybe it will have webOS 2.3.

Verizon Moves 2 Million iPhones in Two Months

Posted in Verizon by Conner Flynn on April 21st, 2011

It sure helps to have friends in high places. Just ask Verizon who made friends with Apple and then went on to activate 2.2 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2011, the first in which it offered Apple’s phone.

AT&T on the other hand, which had previously had an exclusive on the iPhone in the U.S., activated 3.6 million iPhones during Q1. Remember, Verizon only started selling the phone in February, so their total only spans two months of availability. Verizon must be feeling pretty good right now.

Motorola XOOM and ATRIX 4G sales are ‘disappointing’

Posted in Motorola by Conner Flynn on April 5th, 2011

We didn’t need an analyst to clue us in on poor sales of Motorola’s key products, but that is exactly what we have today. Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette revised his full-year 2011 revenue estimates down from $13.7 billion to $12.25 billion. He also revised his 2012 revenue estimates down from $15.34 billion to $13.62 billion. Ouch!

He says that overall sell-through trends for the Xoom and Atrix have been disappointing and he believes the Atrix’s lower-than-forecast sales are a result of the $49 iPhone 3GS and the HTC Inspire, which makes perfect sense. What is Motorola going to do now? Hopefully they price their products better to start.

AT&T Buys T-Mobile for $39 billion

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on March 20th, 2011

AT&T has announced that it is acquiring T-Mobile USA for $39 Billion. I guess that’s the going rate for adding 33M customers all at once. Combined, the new entity will have about 129M subscribers. Both networks use GSM as the basic building block, so network consolidation should be pretty effortless.

AT&T has just become more powerful. Deutsche Telecom, the parent company will have an 8% stake in AT&T if the deal is approved by the government. T-Mobile users will gain access to the iPhone and eventually to AT&T’s 4G LTE network. What do you think? Is this ultimately good for consumers?

Analyst says 4G iPhone won’t arrive until 2012

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on February 24th, 2011

4G is the big thing right now and everybody is hopping on the bandwagon. Everybody except Apple that is. An analyst from Telecom Pragmatics, Sam Greenholtz, says that the iPhone 5 will be launching later this year, and will not have any LTE radios and also that the iPhone 6 (to be released in 2012) will be the one supporting LTE.

Another analyst says that when Apple locked down the specs for the iPhone 5, they didn’t expect this level of hardware competition. That does sound believable. But if past iPhone launches are any indication, the exclusion of 4G this year might be on purpose. Well, we will see how it all plays out.

HTC Thunderbolt may hit Verizon early

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on February 2nd, 2011

Verizon has hinted that the HTC Thunderbolt might arrive early. It reminded users that the iPhone is coming soon and also said that the Android-based 4G phone might come “sooner than expected.” No exact date was given.

Previous leaks from Verizon’s retail system have the Android flagship’s launch on February 14 and that could be the date Verizon is teasing, but it also might be moved up.

Sprint ZTE Peel turns your iPod Touch into a phone

Posted in iPod Touch by Conner Flynn on November 10th, 2010

Ever want to turn your iPod Touch into a Pseudo iPhone? Sprint has the answer. And it’s expensive. The ZTE Peel is an iPod touch case with a built-in 3G hotspot. It costs $80, but only supports two devices at a time, and 1GB of data costs $30 per month.

For comparison, Sprint’s OverDrive with 4G service costs $50, and for $60 a month you get 5GB of data over 3G and unlimited 4G data. The other problem is that this also makes your skinny iPod touch fatter.

We can’t all afford iPhones, but even so you probably already own the latest generation iPod touch. Well, you can now turn that Touch into an iPhone 4 thanks to a selection of applications.

You’ll need the fourth generation iPod touch, a VoIP app like Skype and Line2. Of course you’ll also need an always-on Wi-Fi connection. After all of that you can proceed. Just be aware that you will have a shorter battery life.

NOOSY HDMI adapter for iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod touch

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on October 18th, 2010

NOOSY China is an unauthorized third-party Apple accessory manufacturer who has come up with a HDMI adapter for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch (4G). It will allow you to output the display of your device to your larger HD display.

However it isn’t clear if the adapter will support audio over HDMI or not. We also aren’t sure if it supports DRM protected content over HDMI, but the site shows images of Star Trek on the iPad and on a connected TV so there ya go.

Seven-inch iPad to have Retina Display, 128GB of memory?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on October 7th, 2010

According to Taiwanese component suppliers contacted by Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities, Apple is not only working on a 7-inch iPad, but one that should have a camera, Retina Display and up to 128GB of storage. Current iPads are limited to 64GB of memory. The analyst was also told that the new device should launch in the first quarter of 2011, and have a “micro or mini” USB port.

The current iPad does support USB peripherals, but only through its 30-pin dock connector, which limits people to one add-on at a time. AppleInsider notes that the port may reflect the European Union’s establishment of micro USB as a standard for mobile charging.
