Alaska Airlines introduces iPad flying manuals for pilots

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on May 29th, 2011

The iPad truly is everywhere now. The iPad will now be replacing the flying manuals at Alaska Airlines. Alaska Airlines will be the first domestic airline to do this as part of an ongoing effort to use technology to enhance flight safety, improve efficiency and also protect the environment.

They will be issuing the 1 1/2-pound iPad instead of the typical 25 pounds of paper flight manuals to all pilots, and make it mandatory for them to carry it with them. The process should be complete by mid-June. This comes after the airline did about 100 tests last spring and winter.

iPad 2 to be available at Radio Shack on Tuesday

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 28th, 2011

Thanks to an internal corporate memo, we know that Apple is planning a deal with Radio Shack. About 500 stores US-wide are due to start carrying the iPad 2 on Tuesday, March 29. This is apparently a last-minute plan that had only been agreed upon in the “last few days.”

The company had a much wider launch with the iPad 2 than it had previously. Usually Apple waits until supply shortages have settled down or until it gets closer to the holidays, when the expansion can have a maximum effect. The more aggressive launch is likely due to battling Android tablets like the Motorola Xoom.

Best Buy Canada will carry iPad 2 on March 25th

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 21st, 2011

Canadian Best Buy stores will not be missing out on selling the iPad 2. In fact they will start selling them on March 25th, according to one store worker who quoted a manager on the matter. You can apparently expect them to be available at 10am friday when stores open on a first come first served basis and obviously you can expect long lines.

It might be more difficult to get an iPad 2 in Canada at launch though, due to the small number of Apple Stores around cities like Montreal and Toronto. There’s also the fact that Apple has also traditionally made the US a priority, diverting the bulk of inventory to the US. Despite these things, hopefully most Canadians who want one can get one without too much trouble at launch.

Tennessee’s Webb School makes iPads mandatory

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on January 25th, 2011

The iPad is all the rage at a private school in Knoxville, TN, where all students from fourth to 12th grade will now be required to carry iPads starting this August. Hey, it beats a backpack full of spine twisting books. The students can either provide their own tablet or lease a WiFi-only model for $20 a month.

Webb School hopes that the iPad will eventually replace traditional textbooks. We aren’t sure how effective an iPad only classroom can be, but I guess we will all find out soon enough.

Toys R Us will soon be carrying the Elonex eTouch tablet for just £90. That makes it the cheapest model around. Just don’t expect an iPad killer. You can choose from a couple of models: There’s a 7-inch model and a 10-inch model for £149.99.

The 10-inch model comes with just 2GB of internal memory, which can be expanded with a microSD memory card. It runs on an ARM 11 1GHz processor and is powered by Android 2.1. Might be a good gift for the kids.

iPad arriving in Walmart stores starting next week?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on October 10th, 2010

Way back in May we told you that Walmart would be offering iPads this year and it looks like that is about to happen. A photo of an email sent to Walmart store managers received by MacRumors indicates that the Apple iPad will be rolled out to up to 1000 stores by the end of October, starting next week.

The photos show that Walmart will be offering all six models of the iPad with initial stock limited to just five of each model per store. Never fear, the standard range of iPad accessories will also offered along with AppleCare extended warranties. Sources say that an additional 800 stores will begin carrying the device in November, and each store will have a live demo unit inside a case that will include a looping video demonstration of the iPad in action.

Still, the rates will carry a premium for that freedom at $15 per 100MB of data over a day, and $30 will get you a week’s pass with 300MB of data, while a full month (at 1GB) will cost $50.

Logitech offers new speaker options for laptops

Posted in Logitech by Shane McGlaun on September 1st, 2010

Of all the notebooks I have tired over the years it’s safe to say that 99.99% of the have crap sound systems. They sound flat, lack volume so you can actually hear what’s going on and have no bass. This is the reason there are some any different external speakers and headphone options around.

Logitech has announced a couple new laptop offerings called the Logitech Laptop Speaker Z305 and the Logitech Wireless Speaker Z515. Both speakers are aimed at notebook users with Mac or Windows machines. The Z515 is a wireless offering with a USB transmitter that uses 2.4GHz tech for 50-foot range. The speaker can also connect to the iPad or iPhone wirelessly as well.

This vinyl messenger bag will carry your portable gadgets, maybe a small laptop, or an iPad. And you’ll be displaying your geeky side.
