Posted in Netbook by Conner Flynn on November 17th, 2010

We know that Jolicloud will be introducing its own netbook, the Jolibook, soon, and word is that those in the UK will be getting theirs this Friday, with a launch in other countries after that. Don’t expect the Jolibook to wow you with awesome specs, though.

There’s an Intel Atom N550 1.5GHz dual core processor, a 250GB hard drive and the Jolicloud Linux-based operating system, specially optimized to run on netbooks. The Jolibook may make a name for itself in educational institutions in the UK since Jolicloud is currently talking to education suppliers over there.

Behold the Jolicloud Jolibook. The 10.1-inch netbook is finally showing off in a set of official press shots. Like in the other images we’ve seen, the lid has a cartoon scene.

The chiclet style keyboard resembles recent Acer Aspire One systems and it’s an all plastic build, which should mean a low starting price. All in all it looks like an Acer except for that lid. What do you think?

Posted in Notebooks by Conner Flynn on November 11th, 2010

You might remember the Jolicloud operating system, which is Linux based and was intended to run on low-power netbook computers. The Jolicloud company has announced that this month they will launch their own netbook that uses the OS.

It will be called the Jolibook. We still don’t have a price or many hardware details. The few specs we do know about include a 10.1-inch screen and it will run the Jolicloud 1.1 operating system and use an Intel Atom N550 CPU and have a 250GB HDD.

Amazon still has a comfortable lead over Apple and other competitors in the US e-book market, according to an analysis by RR Bowker. The group claims that Amazon’s Kindle Store controlled 61 percent of e-book downloads.

Barnes & Noble’s store has 20 percent while Sony has five percent. Apple’s market share for the iBookstore wasn’t published at the time of the study, but was less than five percent. Amazon also has the largest device market share, at 40 percent, and reading directly on a computer comes in second.

With the success of the iPad, Apple has announced some updates for its iBook app at WWDC. The changes are fairly practIcal and useful ones. Things that make life just a tad easier with books.

Like the ability to make notes in your book, there’s a new bookmark ribbon, a page to display your notes and bookmarks, and yes, PDF support. Those additions should help steer even more people to the iPad who are looking for an eBook reader, but are undecided.

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on April 5th, 2010

Apple iPad launchHere are the numbers. 300,000 iPads were sold, leading to 1,000,000 app downloads, and 250,000 ebook downloads from the iBook Store.

The original iPhone sold 270,000 units in the first 30 hours. So 300,000 is pretty impressive. Remember, many are holding out for the 3G version next month and this was a US-only launch. Not bad at all. But then we knew they would have no trouble selling them.

Apple iPad Launch Today in the US

Posted in iPad by Darrin Olson on April 3rd, 2010

Apple iPad launchApple launched it’s new iPad tablet on Saturday, meeting long lines of individuals anxiously waiting, some for many hours, to purchase the new mobile device. The release of the iPad is the most anticipated product Apple has released since the iPhone launch in 2007, with almost as much hype surrounding it.

The iPads going on sale Saturday are the WiFi-only versions and are priced from $499 to $699 depending on the storage capacity desired, which ranges from 16GB to 64GB. Apple will release a 3G version of the iPad later in the month with prices ranging from $629 to $829, again depending on storage capacity.

The iPad devices are a small tablet-like device with a 9.7-inch touch screen (on screen keyboard) and they run an operating system very similar to the iPhone or iPod touch. They have the ability to download and play music and videos from Apple’s iTunes library, read books e-books with Apple’s new iBook application and use thousands of applications from the Apple App Store for the iPad.

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on April 3rd, 2010

Many of us were wondering if the Kindle app would show up on the iPad and here it is. You can still purchase ebooks despite the fact that it competes with Apple’s iBooks app and store. Pretty nice of them I guess.

It is all official now. The app lets users select from over 450,000 books from the Kindle Store on iPad and features Amazon Whispersync technology that saves and synchronizes things like your last page read, bookmarks, notes, and highlights across your Kindle, Kindle DX, iPhone, iPod touch, …

Apple launches iPad tutorial videos

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 29th, 2010

There’s only a few days left before you get your very own iPad. Now Apple has gone and posted some tutorial videos on their site. This way, by the time you get it in your hands, you can feel like an expert and impress your friends.

The tutorials cover pretty much everything you need to know, like the native iPad applications, from Safari to Videos, along with several applications you’ll have to download from the iPad App Store. Pages, Keynote, and Numbers make an appearance as well. They’re not super detailed, but they do a good job of covering all the bases.

The Recycled iMac G4 Lamp was made from the base of an iMac G4 that had died, but as you can see it was given new life. You better hurry if you want one as there is only one available. It’s just $125 from Etsy. Totally worth it if you are an Apple fanboy.

Recycled Apple iBook G4 Clock

Posted in Clocks by Conner Flynn on February 7th, 2010

We’ve seen plenty of clocks made from recycled computer parts, but this one is definitely one of the neatest. The Recycled Apple iBook G4 Clock is made from a recycled iBook G4 case, and uses an Apple mouse for the clock pendulum.

The whole thing measures 14 inches wide by 18 inches in height and even features a quartz clock movement, and pendulum movement. It runs on 2 AA batteries. You can’t really call yourself a geek unless you have something like this in your apartment.

Apple iPad eBook app is called iBooks

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on January 27th, 2010

Looks like the Kindle now has a worthy arch-enemy. Apple’s iPad has an ebook store called “iBooks”. (What else?) The publishers include all of the big players: Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and Hachette.

Apparently the books won’t be cheap, which means publishers can stay in business longer. You can probably expect price wars very soon. The example book is a hefty $15. Interestingly, Apple is using ePub, which means books from other stores may work as well.
