Apple announces iTunes 10 with Ping social network

Posted in iTunes by Conner Flynn on September 1st, 2010

It isn’t really a surprise, but Apple has announced iTunes 10, complete with a brand new logo. The standout feature of iTunes 10 is Ping. Think a music-centered social network like Last.fm.

It will let you get your social fix by following people, even artists, establishing a “circle of friends,” do the whole comment thing, check out custom song and album charts, and find over 17,000 concert listings. Ping is also making the jump to the iPhone and iPod touch, and it’s available with iTunes 10 today.

Fox, others considering 99-cent iTunes TV rentals?

Posted in iTunes by Conner Flynn on August 24th, 2010

There had been previous rumors, but now a new source claims that Apple is deeper into negotiations with Fox’s parent company News Corp., as well as “other media companies”, regarding deals for the plan, which would give one or two days of viewing at half the price of a purchase. CBS and Disney are also considering it.

The rumors around iTV persist as well. It would cost just $.99 and have a “smaller hard drive,” a flash drive, and would rely more heavily on streaming than locally stored media. Some other detailed rumors have said that it would still stop at 720p, but that it would run a variant of iOS and could have an app platform.

Apple iOS 4 security breach gives complete access to your iPhone

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on August 3rd, 2010

Apple fanboys have long gloated about the “fact” that Apple users are safe and secure compared to PC users. It’s utter nonsense of course and here’s further proof. Owners of the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad need to be careful. Visiting a web page and loading a simple PDF file might actually set off a security bug that affects all iOS 4-powered devices.

All it requires is for the user to visit a web address using Safari, and the site will automatically load a simple PDF document that holds a font which hides a special program. When the IOS 4-powered device you are using displays the PDF file, the font will begin the stack overflow condition that allows embedded code in the font to gain full control of your device.

BlackBerry 6: Multimedia Experience

Posted in BlackBerry by Conner Flynn on July 22nd, 2010

RIM has now shared some additional screenshots of the improved multimedia capabilities of BlackBerry OS 6, giving us a taste of what we can expect when the OS arrives. Users can get album art from iTunes and other locations if they sync with BlackBerry Media Sync, and you can navigate tracks with a carousel interface in landscape mode, just like Apple’s Cover Flow.

Multi-touch pinch-to-zoom will be available on touchscreen BlackBerry devices, and you can capture photos with the new onscreen controls. You can also sync photos and videos to and from your smartphones.

XStreamHD: Blu-ray quality movies instantly

Posted in Set Top Boxes by Conner Flynn on July 14th, 2010

Charlie over at DVICE got a chance to check out the XStreamHD entertainment system that’s currently under development and in beta. The satellite-based XStreamHD works using the concept of “pre-fetched entertainment.” which means you can view movies without having to download or stream. The data for up to 40 movies is sent to your box during the night ready for you to view whenever you’re ready. All Blu-Ray quality.

When you want to watch a movie just unlock it and play it immediately. There’s a monthly fee of $10 plus a fee for each movie watched but XStreamHD claims that it will keep prices in line with amazon and iTunes rentals.

Google plans music service with Android 3.0

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on July 4th, 2010

Apparently Google wants to take on Apple’s iTunes with the next Android 3.0 update which should be released before the year is over. Google Music should be released along with Android 3.0 and it likely will have something to do with the recently acquired streaming service Simplified Media.

Itunes could use some competition and if anyone can do it, Google would be the company. It should be interesting to see what happens. It won’t be easy.

iMovie hits iTunes App Store

Posted in iTunes by Conner Flynn on June 24th, 2010

So you don’t have an iPhone 4 yet, unless you were lucky enough to have it delivered, but if you did receive Apple’s latest handset, you probably noticed that it doesn’t come with a tool to edit all the 720p footage you just shot.

That’s where iMovie for iPhone comes in handy. It just went live. So feel free to hit up the App Store and buy it for $4.99.

iMaria is a sad app for your pathetic and lonely life

Posted in iTunes by Conner Flynn on June 3rd, 2010

It’s not easy being an internet geek. We get that. And we feel for you. But please, get out once in a while. Meet someone. That’s a much better alternative to buying this iMaria app. It’s a sort of Playmate virtual girlfriend for the nerd that lacks everything.

iMaria is happy to stay at home and cook, or go out. It’s all good. She’s a virtual English girlfriend with a cute accent and a great personality, as well as a great pair of… And obviously it’s all very tame and lame thanks to iTunes no-porn policy. Which makes you even sadder if you buy this. Have fun watching her peel virtual potatoes in the virtual kitchen. Probably the highlight of your day.

Racing game for iPad uses iPhones as controllers

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on April 30th, 2010

With Padracer your gaming console is an iPad as a display and iPhones as controllers. How cool is that? Though if you don’t already own these things, it could get a bit expensive for you. Basically the iPad is the race track and the iPhones are turned into controllers once connected via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

All you have to do is steer your race cars by turning an iPhone like a steering wheel. The game is just five bucks at the iTunes store.

Lala closing on May 31

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on April 30th, 2010

I think there were a lot of us out there that knew the end was near for Lala when Apple announced that it had purchased the company. Sure, some of the tech behind Lala might live on inside iTunes or other Apple offerings, but the Lala service would undoubtedly die.

Apple has now announced that it will be killing Lala on May 31. Current users of the service can continue to use Lala until that day and no new users are being accepted.

iTunes virus targets iPad owners

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on April 27th, 2010

The iPad has gone viral. Literally. PC-using iPad owners have been targeted with a new virus. This one is disguised as an iTunes update that offers better “performance, newer features and security”, but the download is actually malware designed to collect all of your sensitive personal information.

Identified by BitDefender as Backdoor.Bifrose.AADY, the piece of malicious code inadvertently downloaded injects itself into the explorer.exe process and opens up a backdoor that allows unauthorised access to and control over the affected system.

Apple files Patent for Digital Concert and Events tickets

Posted in patents by Conner Flynn on April 18th, 2010

Details have come to light regarding a new Apple patent which could see the iPhone and iPod Touch used as digital tickets for concerts and events. The patent was filed in September 2008 and reveals that the system would use near field communications technology. Your iPhone or iPod would be simply swiped allowing you to enter the concert or event.

Rumor is that if you like the show and are a female, you can also use your iPhone to digitally throw a pair of panties not onstage, but from your iPhone to the band’s iPhone. Okay, I made that part up, but it certainly opens up some interesting possibilities.

HP Slate Promotional Video

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on April 5th, 2010

The latest promotional video of the HP Slate takes some well deserved shots digs at Apple’s new iPad. The video below won’t tell you the specs, how much it will cost or when it will be available, but it does make a point to mention that the device supports SD cards and USB connectors, which you won’t find on the iPad by default.

Ironically, the HP Slate is shown running iTunes. HP is trying to tell you that it is just as good, or maybe better than Apple’s iPad. What do you think? We think it looks very promising.

Apple iPad Launch Today in the US

Posted in iPad by Darrin Olson on April 3rd, 2010

Apple iPad launchApple launched it’s new iPad tablet on Saturday, meeting long lines of individuals anxiously waiting, some for many hours, to purchase the new mobile device. The release of the iPad is the most anticipated product Apple has released since the iPhone launch in 2007, with almost as much hype surrounding it.

The iPads going on sale Saturday are the WiFi-only versions and are priced from $499 to $699 depending on the storage capacity desired, which ranges from 16GB to 64GB. Apple will release a 3G version of the iPad later in the month with prices ranging from $629 to $829, again depending on storage capacity.

The iPad devices are a small tablet-like device with a 9.7-inch touch screen (on screen keyboard) and they run an operating system very similar to the iPhone or iPod touch. They have the ability to download and play music and videos from Apple’s iTunes library, read books e-books with Apple’s new iBook application and use thousands of applications from the Apple App Store for the iPad.

Kindle iPad app available on iTunes

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on April 3rd, 2010

Many of us were wondering if the Kindle app would show up on the iPad and here it is. You can still purchase ebooks despite the fact that it competes with Apple’s iBooks app and store. Pretty nice of them I guess.

It is all official now. The app lets users select from over 450,000 books from the Kindle Store on iPad and features Amazon Whispersync technology that saves and synchronizes things like your last page read, bookmarks, notes, and highlights across your Kindle, Kindle DX, iPhone, iPod touch, …
