Google kicks off Music Beta

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on May 10th, 2011

Google has taken its first steps into cloud media today with Music Beta, which allows users upload up to 20,000 songs that they can then stream from either a web browser or an Android device. Listeners can even “pin” music to a mobile device to have a permanent copy of those songs to play while “offline”. I wonder what Apple thinks about all of this.

There’s also a new playlist feature called Instant Mix, where Music Beta ‘listens’ to the music and uses the sound of the music to automatically generate a playlist. A Music Manager desktop app for Macs and Windows PCs will allow users to automatically grab and upload their iTunes or Windows Media Player collections to the cloud as well.

Is Apple releasing an HDTV this year?

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on April 13th, 2011

According to a report, Apple could launch an Internet-connected high-definition television set by the end of 2011, expanding into the $100 billion LCD TV market. Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities said in a note to investors that he picked up “data points” that point toward a “Smart TV” launch by Apple, possibly as soon as by the end of this year.

If Apple does want into this market, (which seems inevitable) will an Apple HDTV take the world by storm like their other products? Maybe. It could be paired with a subscription service to iTunes, allowing users to access content and services at a flat subscription rate so that a cable box and digital video recorder will no longer be needed. That would make a lot of folks happy.

Digital Music to overtake CDs in U.S. sales by next year

Posted in music by Conner Flynn on March 31st, 2011

Things have been bad for the music industry ever since itunes and it is getting worse. Physical album sales are expected to drop 40%. The RIAA in the US and the worldwide IFPI have often said that these drops in sales are only due to piracy, but we all know that that is just bogus. Much of the drop is due to the decline of the album format.

Much of the industry’s sales has always been due to stronger whole albums in some cases and of course the necessity to buy a whole album at $15 to $20, even when you only want one or two songs. Strong quality albums are what sells. Quality. Are there any modern Beatles? Stones? Bah. I’m going back to bed.

United States viewers are able to pay for a 48-hour viewing window instantly in Facebook credits then enjoy it right on their Facebook. We aren’t sure why they think they can outdo iTunes and Netflix, but they are going to give it a try.

Stereolizer turns your iPad into a Stereo

Posted in iPad accessories by Conner Flynn on March 15th, 2011

Here is a great way to turn your iPad into a retro music player. Stereolizer is a new iPad app that allows you to give your iPad some 1980′s style and it provides some handy features too. The Stereolizer iPad app includes access to more than 10,000 streaming web radio stations and lets you arrange your favorite stations into 3 presets of 10 radios each.

While listening to the radio, you can record audio to virtual tapes direct from the radio or audio messages via the built in mic. Just like a retro stereo. After you’ve recorded a collection you can then eject the virtual tape to view and classify, remove or rename them using the iPad keyboard. Pretty cool.

iTunes thinking about 24-bit music tracks

Posted in iTunes by Conner Flynn on February 22nd, 2011

Apple as well as others are considering upgrading the audio on tracks to get close to master-level audio quality, according to sources. The heads of Labels are negotiating to bring the underlying bit depth from 16-bit to 24-bit. This would bring the audio quality from CD-level to the same detail as the master tracks from the studio.

Interscope-Geffen-A&M head Jimmy Iovine at the HP webOS event briefly confirmed a push towards 24-bit audio through music stores and hinted that Apple and others might have to upgrade the iPhone, iPod and other devices for the extra depth.

Redbox planning subscription streaming movie service

Posted in movies by Reuben Drake on February 17th, 2011

President of Redbox, Mitch Lowe told analysts that its upcoming online movie service would be subscription-based like Netflix and Hulu Plus instead of charging for each movie like others including iTunes, Zune or Amazon.

Users would pay a monthly fee to stream to devices and access discs at kiosks. Redbox will have a partner in the service and the Seattle Times is thinking that it is Walmart Vudu and Amazon. So if you are a Redbox fan, this is good news.
