iPod touch now runs iPhone applications

Posted in iPhone,iPod,iPod Touch by Conner Flynn on October 12th, 2007

Ipod Touch users everywhere are rejoicing. Well, until apple decides to brick them at least. Those of you still following this saga will be happy to know that the hackers who have been dismantling the iPod touch have apparently now decrypted the ramdisk and installed applications. That means your iPod Touch can do all kinds of nifty things, like run mail, Google Maps, and many other 3rd party apps.

Ipod Touch users everywhere are rejoicing. Well, until apple decides to brick them at least. Also, it remains to be seen how well these apps truly run. It’s a fascinating technological and cultural event at any rate, as devices get hacked, bricked and hacked again in an endless circle. I say just cut out the middle man and let these guys work for Apple.

Nobel prize in physics awarded to Albert Fert and Peter Grünberg for Giant Magnetoresistance which helped make smaller hard drivesThe 2007 Nobel Prize for physics was awarded joinlty to French physicist Albert Fert (pictured left) and German physicist Peter Grünberg for their work in magnetoelectronics, also known as spintronics. The two each made independent discoveries of magnetoresistance back in the 80′s, which uses the spin of electrons to store and transport information instead of using an electrical charge. This discover allows more data to be stored in a smaller physical space and in under a couple decades led to radically smaller hard drives for common items such as laptop computers, smartphones and iPods.

Posted in Apple,News,iPod,iPod Classic,iPod Nano by Reuben Drake on October 7th, 2007

Apple releases firmware update 1.0.2 for the iPod classic and 3rd generation iPod nanoApple made a quiet release of a firmware update for both the iPod classic and the 3rd generation iPod nano on Saturday. The new version 1.0.2 mostly consists of bug fixes according to Apple but ended up revealing a little bit more once installed. Aside from some improvements on calender and contact synchronization MacNN reported installing the new firmware through iTunes updates and finding upgrades to the Cover Flow making it more similar to iTunes 7.4. The new firmware also had another “Ask” option added to the TV output option which allows users to turn on the TV out mode when the iPod is connected to a device capable of showing video output from the iPod. Nothing too spectacular but little surprises like these are always nice.

24 carot gold MacBook Pro with diamond Apple logo on the coverThe folks over at Computer Choppers have customized a MacBook Pro and posted some pictures of it on their site which makes the normal silver MacBook Pro’s look just seem kinda’ gray. They said they hope to it up in their gallery soon but until then the few pictures they have says quite a bit. It features a 24 carat gold case, a diamond studded Apple logo on the cover and even the keyboard is paint-matched in gold. The company says they aren’t into mass production of these items so you’ll have to call and have yours custom-built if you want one, maybe to have it match your gold and diamond iPod Shuffle?

Nike Amp+ Sport Remote Control watch released

Posted in Exercise Gadgets,Watches by Darrin Olson on October 5th, 2007

Nike Amp+ Sport Remote ControlWithout much fanfare Nike has let loose the new Nike Amp+ Sport Remote Control. The Amp+ wears on your wrist like a watch and actually will tell the time, but that’s the least impressive of its features.

The watch works in conjunction with the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit and Nike+ iPod Ready shoes (if you want shoes with a special pocket in your shoe for the sensor) to give you audible feedback while your walking or running of your time, distance, calories and pace. This is very convenient and saves you from toggling through menus and viewing the data on a little LCD screen. The display shows the time and when connected to your iPod nano will show navigation controls for the player. You can even set up a particular “power song” and hit a button to play it during the tougher times when you need a little extra motivation.

iPod waterproof music in a tube

Music Tube waterproof iPod speaker dockThis iPod speaker dock from Taiwan’s Nova has a transparent, waterproof covering that looks like a tube of some sort of lotion or gel, complete with a whole in the end where it would hang on display at the store. The idea is to provide a waterproof speaker system for your iPod that lets you bring it into the shower. It also looks like you might even be able to control the iPod through the case but in reality to us it looks like just a cheap way to try to make a waterproof dock.

Whiten your teeth with your iPod

Posted in Health,iPod Accessories by Conner Flynn on October 3rd, 2007

new iWhitening iPod accessory helps whiten your teethI kid you not. The first step is applying peroxide strips on your teeth. Then just put the mouthpiece in your mouth, plug it into your iPod, and crank up the tunes. This is the latest(and only) iPod teeth whitening system. It promises a whiter smile after just 30 minutes of music time.

If I understand the physics of this iWhitening, the music conducts through bone, creating vibrations that make the strips work. I wouldn’t give up regular dental checkup’s just yet, but it’s cool to think that music can magically “rock” your teeth whiter. You’ll want to use it indoors, as the weird mouthpiece will insure that people maintain as much distance from you as possible.

Knicks cable holder organizes your cablesFinally I have found something that will forever change my life for the better. Behold the wonder that is the Knicks Cable Holder, a godsend if you’re like me and your desk or floor are covered with cables or, like me, you “hold” the not-being-used USB cables underneath a book or other weightier object.

The device is so simple yet I haven’t seen it for sale anywhere else: fasten the Knicks to a side of your desk or nearby piece of furniture and run your cables through it. When you need to unplug one, like a USB, the plug end won’t fall to the ground. That’s it. As I said, simple as can be but where have you been for all my life Knicks Cable Holder? My $11 is yours.

cy-fi wireless iPod bike speakers

Posted in Exercise Gadgets,Outdoors,Speakers,iPod Accessories by Reuben Drake on September 26th, 2007

cy-fi iPod dock and speakers for your bikeWhile we’re pretty sure we’ve seen bicycle speakers before, including ones for the iPod, cy-fi is a new product designed to dock your iPod and the first we’ve seen to provide wireless speakers mounted on your bike to “ride louder” according to the company.

The idea comes from bike riders who wear headphones to listen to music and are unable to adequately hear traffic around them. The cy-fi system lets them bring their music along in a compact package without the ambient sound restrictions by most headphones.
