4th-gen iPod touch teardown reveals stealth antenna

Posted in iPod Touch by Conner Flynn on September 8th, 2010

The folks at iFixit continued their investigation of the latest round of iPods with a teardown of the fourth-generation iPod touch. They went deeper than the FCC teardown, and confirmed that the Wi-Fi antenna has been moved to the front, eliminating the need for the black plastic window on that earlier models had. It also shows that Apple is using Toshiba flash memory for the main storage on the iPod; other Apple devices usually use Samsung.

The A4 processor model number is the same one as in the iPad and confirms that it’s using 256MB of RAM. The iPhone 4 has a different label to indicate that it has 512MB. The headphone jack is removable for the first time, and there’s a gap around the battery that simplifies removal.

Control your iPhone with your mind

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on September 7th, 2010

If only you could command your iPhone with your thoughts? Maybe you can after all. That’s the idea behind the XWave, a headset that turns your brain’s electrical activity into signals that can control your phone.

Details are scarce, but it is basically an interpreter, a middle man if you will, that allows your head and your iPhone to communicate. The XWave has a pad that rests on your forehead, picking up the tiny electrical signals that change along with your changing thoughts. The headset comes bundled with some apps that let you control your music library etc, and PLX is seeking out developers to create new apps for the headset as well.

Apple’s Ping hits 1 million users in 48 hours

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on September 5th, 2010

Apple has already hit a milestone as it has reached over one million users of Ping within the first 48 hours of its going online. That’s a third of the three million that have downloaded iTunes 10. You can expect that number to grow much higher, as “many more people” are likely to download iTunes.

The adoption is very rapid and is helped tremendously by Apple’s existing user base of course. With over 160 million iTunes owners using credit cards and so are guaranteed to be attached to an Apple ID, Ping will require very little effort to get a large portion of those users online.

Walkman temporarily outsells iPod in Japan

Posted in Walkman by Conner Flynn on September 2nd, 2010

They love Walkmans in Japan. So much so that Sony’s Walkman line has temporarily passed the iPod for sales in Japan again, according to researchers at BCN. Players like the S640 helped Sony slide past in August with 47.8 percent of sales where Apple dropped to 44 percent. The Walkman overtook the iPod briefly a year ago, but these new figures mark the first time that Sony managed to hold an overall lead for the month.

The iPod nano 8GB and 16GB were still the top sellers, but it was the variety of Sony players that ultimately overwhelmed their numbers.

FCC tears new iPod touch to shreds on camera

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on September 2nd, 2010

Generally when we catch photos and details on new products via the FCC the things are seen in maybe one blurry shot like we had with the Griffin PartyDock not long ago. The FCC has been at work on the iPod touch for it to get the certifications to hit stores in the coming weeks.

The FCC has taken the new iPod touch that was unveiled yesterday, torn the gadget into pieces, and filmed the whole thing. This is something rather new that I haven’t seen the FCC do very often with the complete teardown. We usually have to wait until iFixit and other sites like it get the gadgets to see a teardown.
