Ping lets you wear Facebook

Posted in Facebook by Conner Flynn on April 18th, 2010

Sure, that’s a nice picture. Now look down. Are you with me yet? Okay. Jennifer Darmour is a designer from Seattle who has incorporated gesture technology into clothing. Called Ping, this clothing can hook up to your Facebook account and with simple gestures you can do all kinds of Facebook things.

For instance, if you tie the waist bow, you can accept friend requests. Or receive vibrations on your shoulders when a new notification hits your account. It’s certainly a unique way to stay connected. Users can even customize gestures to certain groups of friends.

Hard Drive turned into a bench sander

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on April 4th, 2010

DIYers all know about using a Dremmel, but sometimes what you need is a bench sander. Suppose you don’t have one? Well, just use an old hard drive. It turns out they make a pretty handy bench sander. This DIYer opened up an older hard drive, removed the read head, and added a piece of cut sand paper.

Yes, it doesn’t seem like it would do much, but check out the video below. Just hook it up to your bench supply and you’ve got a small sander ready to use.

Gearboard concept takes that controller mess from the floor and hangs it on the wall

Posted in Concepts by Shane McGlaun on March 25th, 2010

I know exactly what my wife would say if I were to bring home the Gearboard concept and try to hang it in the living room. She would say, “You’re not putting that ugly thing in my living room.” Apparently, having ovaries entitles you to ownership of the living room unless a picture needs to be hung or a spider squished.

The Gearboard is sort of cool with groves cut in it that accepts the little hooks of various shapes and sizes for hanging up your controllers. I think the concept would work well in a kid’s room or a game room where controllers are ok in the open.

The DMP-BV200 and DMP-HV100 models will let you watch TV, DVD and Blu-ray (only for the BV200) and are compatible with all forms of AVCHD video.

It will also handle DivX files from either a USB device or an SD memory card and you can hook either one up to the Panasonic Viera Home Theater system and DVR with the DY-WL10 Wi-Fi dongle. Same sets, smaller experience.

Kindle app finally arrives on Mac

Posted in kindle by Conner Flynn on March 18th, 2010

Amazon’s Kindle has released apps for both the iPhone and the PC. And now its arriving on the Mac. The Kindle app is free, and hooks you up with Amazon’s bookstore where you can buy books or check out previews of books.

With these apps, Amazon has done the smart thing and taken the ebook store as far as it will go, which is a good thing since the iPad will shake things up. I wonder what the ereader market will look like in one year.

The coffee table isn’t what it used to be. Take Digital Touch’s T3-B table, a coffee table sized unit with a built-in 26-inch LCD and Wi-Fi. It will let you browse and interact with all kinds of things your old coffee table couldn’t.

The table also features an orientation switch to view your content from any side of the table. If that isn’t enough, the table can also be hooked up with an optional receipt printer, credit card reader and TV tuner. Perfect for a hotel environment or restaurant.

Dog-e-Minder is perfect for the forgetful pet owner

Posted in Pets by Shane McGlaun on February 10th, 2010

Long ago when my wife and I were first married and before the kids came along, we had a Jack Russell terrier that had seizures. The dog had to have medications twice a day or he would seize and poop everywhere. I always had a hard time remembering to give the dog his meds, a gadget like the new Dog-e-Minder would have been handy.

The Dog-e-Minder is designed to be hooked to the dog’s collar like a nametag. It has three buttons that are for walk the dog, feed the dog, and give the dog its medications. When the task is done you hold the correct button down for three seconds and the time and date the meds were given is recorded.

LG goes retro with the Serie 1 CRT TV

Posted in Television by Conner Flynn on January 25th, 2010

You won’t have to enter the way-back machine to check out what 1960′s TVs looked like. Just check out LGs Serie 1 television. The Serie 1 uses not-quite-2010 CRT technology and a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 14-inch screen.

A digital tuner gives you all the channels (If you want black and white, just push a button) and composite video connectivity so you can hook up your old game console. Check out those chrome legs and screen dials.

Posted in Digital Photo Frames by Conner Flynn on January 24th, 2010

So you want to display pictures of your newborn baby, or maybe some pics of you holding up that 8 pound trout that you hooked. Whatever the image, the My Life Pocket Digital Photo Frame will do the job with a 3.5-inch display sporting a 320 x 240 resolution.

The device even has a rechargeable battery that provides 3 hour’s worth of juice. Sadly it has an internal memory of just 128MB and there’s no mention of expansion.

Rethink Hanger uses plastic bottles to hang clothes

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on January 21st, 2010

In the quest to eliminate waste, or at least stop some waste from hitting landfills, humans have created some interesting designs in the last 2 years. This is the latest. The Rethink, a hanger that’s not a hanger until you ttach two plastic bottles.

It’s from designer Xuan Yu and it’s just a hook with two holes that hold empty bottles. Just pick from all the empty bottles you’ve been hoarding and screw them into the holes. Now you have yourself a hanger. One that isn’t as flat as a normal hanger and won’t let you hang as many garments in your closet, but at least you are being green right?

Retro-tech Platinum table: Great idea, insane price

Posted in Furniture by Conner Flynn on January 12th, 2010

The Retro-tech Platinum table is a coffee table with a 22-inch monitor and a computer inside. The idea is that you hook the table up to your TV as a media center. Which is a pretty nifty idea. Especially for parties and get-togethers.

The problem is that it costs $4,850. You could do this yourself for hardly anything. It’s the sort of product that gets us all excited to put this in our livingroom and then sh*ts all over our carpet with it’s insane price. Oh well, someone will do a better version for far cheaper.

Motorola has announced two new GPS navigation devices, the TN700 and TN500. They are both “connected” devices, however you’ll need to hook them up to a Bluetooth-enabled cellphone if you want to transfer data. The technology comes from Airbiquity and the Google Search capability augments the internal POI database.

The TN500 has a 4.3″ widescreen display with lane guidance, junction views and spoken street names, while the TN700 has a larger 5.1″ cinematic display along with other features found on the TN500, but adds real-time traffic with an optional dash cradle.

Toshiba dynadock V is perfect for notebook users

Posted in Toshiba by Shane McGlaun on January 11th, 2010

I am not a big fan of working exclusively from a notebook. The problem is that my desktop machine is more powerful than 99% of the notebooks out there and I want to use my 30-inch display not a smaller 15.6-inch screen of the average notebook.

If you like to work from a notebook, but get tired of unhooking all the peripherals attached to it when you move around, Toshiba has a new universal notebook dock for you called the dynadock V. The dock has four USB ports along with 3.5mm jacks for headphones and a mic.
