South Korean scientists transmit broadband signals through a human arm

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on March 16th, 2010

Need a hand with your data? How about an arm? Turns out that human skin is a very energy-efficient conduit for transmitting data. And why not? It can transmit electricity. In fact, a recent experiment achieved a rate of 10Mbps. In the experiment they used small, flexible electrodes.

The news might lead to new medical devices that can monitor blood sugar or electrical activity in the heart. Devices that could cut energy needs for a monitoring network by about 90 percent compared to wireless devices that run on batteries.

Haier Ibiza Theatre PMP

Posted in Portable Meda Players by Conner Flynn on January 12th, 2009

Haier Ibiza Theatre PMPThe Ibiza Theatre is the first touchscreen player from the company that offers a cheaper alternative to Apple’s gadget line, but it surprisingly lacks Wi-Fi. Some features of the Ibiza Theatre include: 2.4″ 320 x 240 resolution display, Bluetooth, Integrated FM tuner, microSD memory card slot, Support for Real’s Rhapsody to Go service, Audible, MP3 and WMA audio support, and AVI and MPEG-4 video support.

Haier promises a 30-hour battery life, and we’re guessing that applies to audio playback and not video. The Ibiza Theatre should be shipping this spring in 8GB and 16GB flavors. They will retail for $110 and $130.

i-Buddy: Instant Messaging just got creepy

You know that little pixellated figure that pops up on screen every time a contact logs on? Kinda cute right? And you feel safe and warm, knowing that human contact is on the way. After all, it gets lonely on the computer. Well, set your engines for creep factor 10. Engage.

This rather ominous and somewhat tubby i-Buddy wants to be your new friend. Just sit i-Buddy on your monitor or desktop and it will respond to incoming MSN messages. His head will glow and his wings will flap. You can almost feel the tension as this thing seems to be looking at you, no matter where you are in the room, like some velvet Jesus painting, but twice as sinister. You aren’t sure what he wants from you, but you are positive he can rip thoughts from your mind if he so wishes. The i-buddy manages to be even stranger then the Availabot we showed you in October. And he was a tiny man who went flaccid when the IM contact leaves.
