NEXiLUX Guitar Controller

Posted in Controllers by Conner Flynn on August 2nd, 2010

This guitar hero controller is perfect for the player that shuttles his instrument back and forth between home and various friends homes. The NEXiLUX wireless guitar controller breaks down into just a few pieces and fits neatly inside a bag.

It’s compatible with the PS3 or PS2, but you can also slide a Wii-mote inside of it and use it with your Wii. The makers also claim that it has more responsive fret buttons than the cheap controllers that ship with the games. If you prefer touch over buttons, there’s a set of five touch-sensitive fret buttons too.

8-bit guitar is a geeky senior project

Posted in DIY by Shane McGlaun on April 28th, 2010

The thing I remember most about video games from my youth was that the graphics sucked and the music was just as bad. I still hear the music from Mario Brothers in my dreams. A senior project from a guy named Mike Davenport has created the perfect instrument for playing those old game soundtracks stuck in your head.

The project is dubbed the 8-bit arcade guitar and is built from the buttons of an arcade game and other gear. Exactly how the project was pulled together is unknown.

DJ Hero stand-alone controllers hit US store shelves

Posted in Activision by Shane McGlaun on March 24th, 2010

I like me some music games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Rap and dance music isn’t my genre of choice so I have not had the need to play DJ Hero yet. If you like DJ Hero Activision has announced that stand-alone DJ controllers are finally available in the US.

The controllers are on Amazon now for about $60. When you add a second controller, you can have head-to-head DJ battles against friends. Activision is also talking up a couple more multiplayer modes that are pretty cool.

Retractable Guitar Hero/Rock Band controller

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on September 1st, 2009

Between Rock Band and Guitar Hero, it’s amazing you have any room left in your house that isn’t occupied by plastic instruments. Do you even have room for DJ Hero? Probably not. But here’s a clever solution.

This retractable Rock Band/Guitar Hero controller from NEXiLUX can fold down to a tiny size for easy storage. And it still has all the buttons you need to rock out. It’s compatible with the Wii, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3. Sadly there’s nothing on a price or release date just yet.

Easy Piano adds a keyboard to the DS Lite

Posted in Nintendo DS by Conner Flynn on July 31st, 2009

Easy Piano adds a keyboard to the DS LiteSure, Guitar Hero continues to dominate the video game music scene, but some people actually prefer to play the piano. For those musicians, a new title for the DS called Easy Piano will let you tickle the ivories on your portable.

The game comes with a keyboard peripheral so I hope you Mozarts have hung onto your DS Lites. It features a lesson mode, a play-along mode and even a song creation mode. The real question is, what can you play on that tiny keyboard with your huge fingers?

Logitech announced drum kit for PS3 Guitar Hero

Posted in Logitech by Shane McGlaun on July 15th, 2009

logitechdrum-sbI am a fan of music games and have spent lots of time with Rock Band. It continues to bum me out that Logitech doesn’t offer any controllers for Rock Band even though it does make some of the coolest controllers for Guitar Hero.

Logitech announced its latest Guitar Hero controller for the PS3 today called the Logitech Wireless Drum Controller. The device connects to the PS3 via a 2.4GHz USB receiver and can last for up to 50 hours on a single pair of AA batteries.

DJ Hero gets a $120 price tag, October 27th ship date

Posted in Activision by Conner Flynn on June 19th, 2009

DJ Hero, Band Hero and Guitar Hero 5 announcedOnline retailers Gamestop and Amazon have both independently put up listings for the DJ Hero / turntable bundle and both list the same October 27th ship date with a price of $119.99 for Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The PS2 version will cost you either the same or $20 cheaper, depending on which site you go with.

Nothing official from Activision though. We’re thinking the prices and date are accurate. But until Activision confirms it, nobody knows for sure. Looks like four more months until you can get your DJ fix.

Jay-Z and Eminem provide music for DJ Hero game

Posted in Activision by Shane McGlaun on June 1st, 2009

scratch-ultimate-sbGuitar Hero and Rock Band are a couple of popular music video games, but for some audiophiles rock music isn’t what they want. Some music fans are into hip-hop, electronic and other genres where DJs spin the tunes rather than rock bands jamming live.

Activision is set to add DJ Hero to its music game line up. We have already seen an aftermarket DJ Hero turntable from Numark and Activison has now announced a special edition DJ Hero game is coming.

DJ Hero, Band Hero and Guitar Hero 5 announced

DJ Hero, Band Hero and Guitar Hero 5 announcedActivision just went bonkers and confirmed a whole bunch of heroes. The most notable is the long-awaited DJ Hero. We wondered what a DJ Hero controller would look like, and we finally get to see in the image above. How you play the thing is a mystery to us.

Music genres include “hip-hop, R&B, Motown, electronica and dance,” and the game will let users create “original mixes”. Activision is also putting the finishing touches on a family-friendly Band Hero game, as well as a Guitar Hero 5 followup.

Fender Guitar Headstock coffee table

Posted in Furniture by Conner Flynn on February 8th, 2009

Fender Guitar Headstock coffee tableWhile you’re rocking out in your living room, playing Guitar Hero, rest your drinks on this awesome Fender Guitar Headstock Coffee Table. Designed after the classic headstock of a Fender Stratocaster, these $750 tables are made of solid maple, custom stained and varnished to match the color of the vintage guitar.

It would be great to put a screen in and add some buttons, converting it into a full fledged Guitar Hero table that you and your friends can play. But that’s just me.

Ovation iDea MP3 recording guitar

Posted in Musical Instruments by Conner Flynn on December 16th, 2008

Ovation iDea MP3 recording guitarImagine how many times great musicians have lost masterpieces just because they didn’t have a way to document it. That’s where the iDea guitar from Ovation comes in. It’s the first guitar to feature a built-in MP3 player for just such occasions. There isn’t much info on specs, but it probably has a decent amount of flash storage so you can record anything on a whim. It features a control panel on the side with an LCD display, mic input and a USB connection. It also has an easy to use 4-way controller for menu navigation. If that’s not enough, you get a set of basic EQ sliders for the bass, mid and treb.

It will let you record the guitar, mic or anything else that’s connected to the aux in jack. You can even mix those features together or use the pitch-stable variable speed playback option to slow things down for practice.

Mad Catz will launch Wii Rock Band gear in early 2009

Posted in Controllers by Shane McGlaun on November 7th, 2008

Mad Catz Rock Band DrumsI have talked before about Rock Band and how much fun it is to play with a group of friends. I’m not the only Rock Band fan out there that likes to play the game. Popularity for the game is so high that there is a wealth of aftermarket controllers on the market for the Xbox and the PS3. You don’t see that many for the Wii though.

Mad Catz has announced that it will be changing that. The controller maker has signed an agreement with Nintendo that will allow it to build and market officially licensed Wii Rock Band controllers outside of Asia.

Rage Wireless Guitars leak acid, transforms Rock into Acid Rock

Posted in Musical Instruments by Conner Flynn on October 22nd, 2008

Rage Wireless Guitars leak acid, transforms Rock into Acid RockFile this one under “Things that do not rock!” The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled all the 57,000 $55 Rage Wireless Guitars that have thus far been sold. The reason? They were made in China of course.

Apparently a circuit board defect can cause the AA batteries included to leak acid if they are installed incorrectly. (People actually install batteries incorrectly?) What it means is that the acid may burn consumers flesh and transform ordinary plain rock into Acid Rock. And that is just unacceptable. I’ll tell you what else is unacceptable. Chemical burns to the groin. Everyone stop rocking immediately. Guitars are dropping, I mean leaking acid!

First details of DJ Hero game

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on September 14th, 2008

First Details Of DJ Hero GameLiving room DJ’s can now also be poseurs, joining the ranks of plastic guitar Gods everywhere. After two years of development, the “controller” for the new game is basically a “simplified DJ deck” as you might expect. You get a platter for scratching; sampling buttons; cross fader; and a sound effects dial which is the equivalent of the whammy bar in Guitar Hero.

It should hit shelves this summer and word is it will include the ability to use Guitar Hero guitars for versus mode face-offs. No flowing musical notes gliding down a guitar neck here. Instead, DJ Hero will flow the music down and around a virtual record in a half arc. Either left top to middle bottom if you are left handed, or right top to middle bottom if you are right handed. Wannabe DJ’s I’m sure have been waiting for this, as for the rest of you, do you guys have any room left in your home after buying all the other games?
