Is this an early look at the Wii 2?

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on May 19th, 2011

Alright Nintendo fans. Sit down. Relax. Grab a Mario stuffed animal or something. This is bound to excite you. We have some potential news for you about the upcoming Wii 2. This is supposedly a video shot by a sneaky developer that gives us a rough look at what we can expect from the console.

We will know for sure what the Wii 2 is all about in a few weeks at E3, but for now hit the video. The controller looks like they slapped a screen on a GameCube controller. The console looks pretty typical of what you would expect. Something that looks like a docking station for the controller can be seen at the end. It all seems pretty legit. What do you think?

Nintendo to introduce Wii successor at E3?

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on March 16th, 2011

The Nintendo 3DS launches next week and now there are rumors that the company may focus on a replacement for the Wii. Frank Gibeau, label head at EA Games, said in a chat with IndustryGamers that he was aware of a follow-up coming. The device is unknown and wasn’t confirmed, but it is a fair bet that it will have have HD support, rivaling competitors from Microsoft and Sony.

Nintendo has been one of the most conservative console makers especially during this generation of console. The Wii was mostly built using faster but nearly identical processors as the GameCube. The company has often refused to discuss the possibility of a next-gen console as long as sales continued to dominate, but sales are not what they once were and it would seem that the time is right.

Old Nintendo GameCubes turned into desktop organizers

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on February 21st, 2011

Need to spice up your office space? How about this hand-crafted Nintendo GameCube desktop organizer? These are made by Etsy seller GreenCub , who removes all of the GameCube’s innards, adding pencil/pen slots where its power and reset buttons once were, and controller ports that are now a drawer.

The disc tray is now a storage tray. Even the side vents are converted into a magnetic paperclip holder and the carry handle is an iPhone/iPod holder. He did a great job and now I want one for my desk. There are three colors available with prices starting from $40 to $50.

Flip-top GameCube portable

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on March 15th, 2010

Gamecube is probably one of my least favorite gaming consoles. But had it looked like this, I would have given it more attention. Techknott built this shiny eye-catching portable, with it’s mirrored finish. The flip top design keeps the optical drive hidden and everything looking sleek.

As you can see, it’s prone to smudges, which we don’t mind a bit, so long as those smudges come from our hands. The design is really eye-catching and looks like it could have easily been mass-produced in the past.

Nintendo DS2 to be unveiled at E3 with accelerometer and higher-res screens

Posted in Nintendo DS by Conner Flynn on March 15th, 2010

Blogger Raymond Padilla has supposedly gleaned some news about the DS2. The DS2 will have two screens, just like every other DS, but they can be used as two separate screens or one giant screen, displaying the same content across both LCDs. They will be bigger, with “higher resolution,”. No word on if they will be HD.

It will of course have an accelerometer for tilt-motion and supposedly the DS2 will perform similarly to a GameCube or Wii, based on the dev kit. It may also run on a Tegra chip, so we can expect some good speed.

Sega Dreamcast iPhone dock

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on October 3rd, 2009

http://www.iphonesavior.com/2009/10/sega-dreamcast-iphone-dock-is-out-of-control.htmlJay Hauf wanted a cool iPhone dock. What he had was his iPhone, a Sega Dreamcast controller and a dream. Ben Heck would be proud. Nice to see that the Dreamcast can still serve a purpose. Soon geeks everywhere will be following in his DIY footsteps as they recycle old console controllers.

What will the next iPhone dock be? A Gamecube controller? A dual-shock dock? We have no idea, but we salute you Jay. You went where no geek had gone before.

Use Sony’s DualShock on your Nintendo Wii

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on June 25th, 2009

Use Sony's DualShock on the Nintendo WiiI’ve always thought that turning the Wiimote sideways looked a little strange, but it’s been the only alternative to using one of Nintendo’s old controllers. Well, not anymore. Now you can use your old PS/PS2 controllers thanks to this DualShock to Wii adapter which costs $18.50.

No one will think it’s weird at all, watching you play the Wii with a Sony controller. Maybe you don’t like the GameCube controller, or the Club Nintendo SNES controller. We aren’t judging you. We just want you to be happy.

Wiimote prototypes revealed

Wiimote prototypes revealedYou won’t find anything earth shattering in these schematics of Wiimote prototypes. They’re all fairly similar. But it is interesting to see what they were thinking at the time. One of them even adds the GameCube’s analogue stick to the surface of the Wii Remote.

Hit the link to see some Nunchuk variants as well. Those early models look very awkward. Just be glad that they put so much work into the process. That’s why you have the awesome ergonomic wiimote that you know and love.

Judge throws out patent suit against Nintendo

Posted in Nintendo by Shane McGlaun on March 17th, 2009

wii-sbWhen you have a popular product all sorts of things, both good and bad, come along with that. You have to deal with copycat products and lawsuits form companies trying to get in on the action. The Nintendo Wii is the most popular game console around and as a result, Nintendo has had to fight several patent infringement suits over the innovative console.

A judge in Tyler, Texas has tossed out a patent infringement lawsuit brought by a company called Fenner Investments against Nintendo. The suit alleged that the Wii console along with its controllers and the GameCube infringed upon patents held by Fenner.

Hori’s Wii Classic Controller is fugly, has autofire

Posted in Wii Accessories by Conner Flynn on November 18th, 2008

Hori’s Wii Classic Controller is fugly, has autofireI have always hated the look of the Gamecube controller, which is basically what we have here. It’s called simply the “Classic Controller.” Sure, there are plenty of other gamepads in this style, but not many get that fugly Gamecube look as close to the original as this one. And look at those autofire switches. It’s available in black, white, and blue on December 4th in Japan. You can pre-order one now for $29.90.

Gamecube WALL-E case mod

Gamecube WALL-E case mod
Wall-E is adorable. Your Gamecube console is gathering dust. That’s right. Combine the two for one of the cutest and most adorable mods mankind has ever seen. There’s not much info on this mod, but the modder did a great job.

Wall-E looks appropriately sad. Probably because everyone has moved on to the Wii. Which brings me to my next point. Wall-E needs an Eve and I think it would only be fair to make her from a Wii. Very nicely done. It could only be better if he crawled around.

Metroid
The Wii has changed the face of gaming with it’s interactive motion controls. So much so, that every other console has begun work on their own version. Just as the Wii has changed gaming, gamers are constantly changing the Wii console itself, giving it all kinds of personalities. Here’s a look at some of our favorites.

Nintendo ordered to pay $21 million

Posted in Nintendo by Conner Flynn on May 15th, 2008

Nintendo ordered to pay $21 millionYou might remember Anascape Ltd, the company that sued Microsoft and Nintendo back in 2006 for controller patent infringement. Well, they’re getting a huge payday of $21 million. A jury found that Nintendo’s Wii Classic, WaveBird, and Gamecube controller designs are all guilty of violating Anascape’s patents. Nintendo will of course appeal, probably telling the judge that nothing can touch them while they are using Mario’s “star power”.

Microsoft settled the case before the matter went to trial. Aside from this case, how many of you have ever heard of Anascape? Do they provide any products or services? Not really, aside from getting money for patents. They need a few Goombas sent their way.
