Kingston announces 128GB flash drive

Posted in Kingston by Shane McGlaun on June 16th, 2009

kingstondt128gb-sbI remember when flash drives first started to come onto the market. The things at the time had capacities measured in low megabytes. Today the flash drive is a popular and widely adopted device with storage capacity rivaling many SSDs on the market.

Kingston has announced a new flash drive today called the DataTraveler 200, the first 128GB flash drive on the market. The drive features a capless design that uses a retractable USB connector to prevent damage and the user doesn’t have to worry about a lost cap.

WWF Penguin USB Flash Drive

WWF Penguin USB Flash DriveIf only the legs moved. Then this USB Penguin flash drive would be truly hilarious. Sadly, they do not. So, while the Penguin has landed head first in your USB port, presumably with cartoon sound effects, it’s legs aren’t moving. Failed comedy opportunity.

The WWF Penguin USB flash drive will come in varying capacities of up to 16GB. Each purchase will see 5% of the proceeds being donated to the WWF. The 8GB configuration is going for $26 currently.

Jointech JE100 ebook reader with 7-inch touchscreenJointech has announced their new JE100 ebook reader, a 7-inch device that uses an LCD touchscreen instead of an e-ink display. Based on Windows CE 5.0, the Jointech JE100 will not only boast Mobipocket Reader, MSReader and eReader support, but also likely play back video and audio files together with viewing and editing Microsoft Office documents.

Inside it features a 400MHz CPU, 128MB of flash memory and 64MB of RAM. Transflash cards up to 4GB in capacity can be used to boost storage, and it rocks two USB ports: one a host, for plugging in external peripherals and the other a slave, for hooking up the JE100 to a computer where it presumably mounts as an external drive.

InnoDisk shows off 128GB Nano SSD drives

Posted in SSD by Conner Flynn on June 4th, 2009

The InnoDisk 128GB Nano SSD drive is not your typical micro USB flash drive. It’s a full fledged 128GB beast in a micro form. Future netbooks will have more storage in less space with the InnoDisk installed, which leaves room for other cool stuff. And we do want it all in a small form factor.

It’s pretty awesome. In the video above, the tiny drive functions flawlessly with 20g’s of accelerative force being placed on it.

Gold bar USB drive

Gold bar USB driveWhen greedy bankers aren’t busy pointing and clicking with the gold bullion wireless mouse, they are storing data about you and your bad credit score on this gold bar USB flash drive. Sometimes they take it home and have a good laugh about your credit over some red wine and the souls of little babies dipped in caviar.

This 4GB USB drive is shiny enough to remind them of just why they got into the business. To accumulate all the shiny stuff in the world and leave none for you. It only cost them $27, but they tell their friends they laid out $10,000.

49-port USB hub

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on May 29th, 2009

49-port USB hubMost computers only have about 2 to 4 USB ports, even the best motherboards only offer 10 or 15 USB ports. But let’s face it, you need more. You have your flash drives, your USB toys, USB Christmas lights, drink coolers etc. You NEED more ports in a USB hub.

This baby has 49. That’s right 49. You’ll never be without a USB port again unless you have way too many USB gadgets. Like say, 50. It’s actually meant for a more professional environment, like say, getting input from 49 different cameras simultaneously and the like. But you can have one too. It’s powered from a standard ATX power supply.

Recycled cardboard USB flash drives

Recycled cardboard USB flash drivesIf you’re concerned about the environment, the recycled cardboard USB flash drive is right up your alley. These are basically disposable USB flash drives. As newer, larger capacity drives become cheaper, the older ones typically get tossed aside.

That’s why this is a good idea. No one wants to see a landfill full of old drives. Five of these come together as one large piece. The idea is that when you need one, you just snap one off. And most of the drive can be recycled when you are done with it.

Lego USB hubs are stackable

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on May 13th, 2009

Lego USB hubs are stackableWe’ve seen our share of Lego USB drives, but these new Lego USB hubs are actually stackable, therefore totally awesome.

Each Lego USB Hub comes with four USB ports, and in a variety of colors that include red, blue, yellow and black. Sadly, they aren’t an official Lego product and so are only available in Korea for about $12 each. That’s a shame. I really wanted to build an entire Lego wall using these and go for the coveted Guinness world record of “Most hubs in a single wall, made by some lonely dork”.

Panda Bear USB flash drive

Posted in USB Flash Drives by Conner Flynn on May 12th, 2009

Panda Bear USB flash driveWith this USB flash drive it’s like you have sawed a Panda in half everytime you go to use it. Ling-Ling here will go on a bamboo diet and eat your data instead. A portion of the proceeds (5%) goes to the WWF to save real pandas, with a minimum annual donation of $25,000. And you love Pandas right?

It’s available in 2GB, 8GB, and 16GB sizes. It’s a nice change of pace that they opted to saw him in half rather than decapitate him. For once.

Mini MPC 2000XL Sampler and SP1200 Drum Machine USB flash drivesI think we are all pretty sick of seeing bland and boringly designed flash drives. So, whenever we see one that stands out, we salute the maker and give it it’s props. These mini MPC 2000XL and SP1200 flash drives are pretty awesome.

These two drives are replicas of the AKAI MPC2000XL sampler and the EMU SP1200 drum machine. Devices that made hip hop happen. Both drives come in 4GB capacities and can be pre-ordered now for $40. They should ship in June.
