JVC rolls out new Everio HDD camcorders

Posted in CES 2008,Camcorders,JVC by Darrin Olson on January 8th, 2008

JVC Everio GZ-MG730 HDD CamcorderAt the CES show this year JVC is launching a new line of their Everio hard disk camcoders, ranging in features, hard drive capacities and even coming in four different colors. JVC is also touting this new lineup to currently be the worlds smallest HDD camcorders available at around 20 percent smaller than the previous models.

All these camcorders utilize a hard disk drive to store video and pictures, ridding the need for discs or tapes, and they come with HDD capacities of either 30GB or 60GB and with or without docks depending on the model. They all also feature an SD card slot, 2.7-inch widescreen LCD and a new touch-sensitive scroll bar to the right of the LCD screen for navigating the menus and selecting videos. This sounds like it would be nice since it still allows easy touch navigation but lets JVC use a better display and avoid finger prints all over it, as what happens when using an actual touch screen.

Sequiam Biometrics Biovault 2.0 safe

Here’s another device you can give the finger too. For security reasons of course. Much like the Master Lock smartTOUCH garage door opener we covered earlier. The Sequiam Biometrics BioVault 2.0 is a safe that needs your finger to open it and get to the valuables inside. It recognizes your fingerprint and opens at your command. You can program it to open for others too, if you grant them access. The safe can accommodate up to 50 users.

You can store your gold inside, jewelry, even your precious and expensive gadgets, but it’s really designed to store guns safely and is endorsed by the NRA. It makes sense to store guns in a safe like this as it would apparently open quickly, but keep them safely locked away from kids. The price is $399.95.

Master Lock smartTOUCH garage door opener

The smartTOUCH garage door opener works with any manufacturer’s garage door opener, and stores up to 20 user’s fingerprints. You can also provide temporary access for contractors or visitors etc, by adding, deleting, and changing user profiles.

I know, it’s all good until someone hacks your finger off, just like SmartScan, but what are ya gonna do? The smartTOUCH operates by sliding the cover open and swiping your finger(Assuming you still have it). The device’s algorithm reads the “unique swirls on your finger to create a unique code, that only comes back to you.” The code is then encrypted and can’t be used to recreate your print. They say that it will work out of the box and is a breeze to install and operate. It’s also weatherproof and can operate at temperatures from -30 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

ezSECU external hard drive case has touchscreen

ezSECU external hard drive case features touchscreen

We all want to protect our data, but you really shouldn’t use a fingerprint reader. Someone can just knock you out or worse, take the finger. Instead, just enter a secret PIN number with the ezSECU ez850 external drive enclosure from IOTEK. It will ask you for the special PIN number each time you access it.

It’s compact and easy to take with you since it only supports 2.5 inch SATA hard drives. I’m assuming that it uses a rechargeable battery to power the screen. It’s size is 79.5 x 129.7 x 23mm and it’s compatible with Windows 2000/XP/Vista and Mac OS 9.2 and beyond. Nice looking, isn’t it? It could save your fingers.

Portable hard drives get paranoid

“Cutie Bio”

There’s been alot of news lately about hard drive security and data protection. A new portable hard drive enclosure from Sarotech, adds another layer of security. It’s called the “Cutie Bio” and I think it has watched one too many spy movies. They’ve integrated a fingerprint scanner into an external USB 2.0 device. Just like James Bond, you can access your data with a simple swipe of your finger. Then once it’s no longer connected to the PC, the information becomes encrypted gibberish.

It’s not a bad deal, at $58.55. The only drawback here is that it works solely on Windows machines, leaving Mac owners out in the cold. They do have one that is Mac compatible and Linux-friendly, which uses the more expensive 1.8-inch drives, but availability is yet to be announced.

Google puts YouTube’s antipiracy system in beta

Posted in Google,News,YouTube by Darrin Olson on October 16th, 2007

Google testing out YouTube’s antipiracy system for videos called Video IdentificationToday Google has announced the beta launch of YouTube Video Identification, a new antipiracy tool that we heard about in July during a copyright infringement lawsuit with Viacom. The new system is a result of a number of angry video owners, Viacom being one of the angriest, complaining that YouTube was supporting users uploading and sharing illegally copied video content.

The new system will use a “fingerprinting” type of technology which provides a unique identification to each video. With Video Identification users will still be able to upload any videos they would like and have the instantly appear on the site as before, but once uploaded YouTube will then be comparing the uploaded content to legitimate videos provided by the owners. When matching videos are found the owner’s can choose to automatically have the video removed, promoted or in true Google form they can even take advantage of the uploaded content and monetize the video for copyright holders who chooses to license their videos.

LucidTouch transparent touch screen

Posted in Concepts,Microsoft,Mitsubishi,Touchscreen by Matt on October 12th, 2007

LucidTouch transparent touch screenMobile devices equipped with touch screens, such as the iPhone, are without a doubt a stellar forward progression in device interface that is very intuitive to users, but still have their faults. The technology behind the screens fault due to occlusion and the way in which the touch is mapped to cursor position making it sometimes difficult to make a selection, especially if you have large fingers. Enter LucidTouch, a technology in the works from Microsoft and Mitsubishi Electric lab research.

LucidTouch employs a pseudo transparency that displays the fingers as shadows from behind the screen but not other objects behind it. The shadow effect is essentially a feature designed to make the user experience more natural than simply displaying touch points coming from the back of the screen which might confuse a user as to which finger is associated with which dot, with the shadow transparency the user needn’t think making the UX more intuitive. A passive touch feature allows the user to utilize their thumbs in making direct touch selections from the front of the device which may be used simultaneously with other fingers at the back using the multi-touch ability of the device.
