3M Mobile ID Reader makes security checks quicker

Posted in Security by Conner Flynn on September 28th, 2008

3M Mobile ID Reader makes security checks quickerThis new 3M Mobile ID Reader could soon be used at events or in situations that require tight security. The idea is that it would scan your identification quickly to prove that you are who you say you are. Then you can be on your way in no time. It works like a credit card scanner and it would be used to scan things like your Visa card or passport, cross checking that info with watch lists of those who are threats.

It runs on Windows Mobile 6 and features WiFi, GSM/GPRS EDGE and a fingerprint sensor. It also has 8GB of storage for keeping track of those that have been scanned. That way they can leave all of that data sitting around somewhere and screw us all. Let’s hope not.

Chrome joypad from Dream Cheeky

Chrome joypad from Dream CheekyIt’s odd but for some reason no one has made a chrome joypad until now. This isn’t just cheap plastic pretending to be chrome either, it’s made from metal. Some of the benefits of a chrome joypad include, but are not limited to: Checking your appearance and seeing if someone else has been using it because the left oily fingerprints behind.

It’s from China’s Dream Cheeky, who are no stranger to USB gadgets and gizmos. The controller sports an 8-way directional pad, four game buttons, start/select buttons and shoulder triggers. The back of the controller has a rubber covering, so you can get a good grip. Not sure if it’s Mac compatible, but it plugs into the USB port on any PC. No word on pricing yet.

Kingston not screwing around with DataTraveler BlackBox security

Kingston Technology said today a new USB flash drive it has developed received Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification, meaning it supposedly is very, very secure. It is known as the DataTraveler BlackBox and you’ll find it pricing at a maximum of around $424 for an 8GB model.

This FIPS 140-2 certification, said Kingston, “requires a validation process that meets federal requirements set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Communications Security Establishment of the Government of Canada. This is critical because many governmental agencies in the United States and Canada mandate that sensitive “data at rest” (i.e., all information not in the network) must be encrypted with the FIPS 140-2 standard.”  Each time the drive runs it does a power-on self test to verify that the encryption architecture is functioning.

Fingerprint recognition the future of credit?

Fingerprint recognition the future of credit?
The loss or misplacement of credit cards is a common worry. No one wants a thief to find it and go on a spending spree. You may not have to worry about it much longer, thanks to this new product in development. It’s a collaboration by Swiss company AXSionics and Siemens.

It’s in the shape and size of your average credit card, only a little thicker due to the fingerprint reader, an LCD display and a few optical sensors. It works just like a typical ATM or credit card but is far more secure. It will only work in the original card user’s hands. The company claims that the system can be put in place without any additional software on all commonly used PCs or laptops being needed. It’s in the process of being tested by several banks in Germany and Switzerland.
