Shoot personal messages into space with frickin’ laser beams

Posted in Esoteric by Shane McGlaun on July 17th, 2009

sentforever-sbThere are all sorts of reasons you might want to send someone a message. You may want to tell that special someone just how much you care; you may want to announce the birth of a child or some other special occasion. You could send a card or you could send the message into space on a laser beam (insert Dr. Evil laugh here).

A company called Sentforever.com is offering to send messages into space for free in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the moon landings. The messages are transmitted with a laser beam at 670 million miles an hour into deep space.

Elecom Wall Socket USB HubThere are all kinds of crazy USB hubs, but sometimes it’s best to keep it simple and classic in design. Elecom has done just that with its new U2H-TC410B “wall socket” USB hub.

No, it doesn’t actually plug into your power outlet, but it’s designed to be mounted on your wall or on the side of your desk, becoming a kind of wall socket for your USB peripherals. It’s a pretty standard four-port USB 2.0 hub aside from the design.

iPod nano 5G, Next-Gen iPhone design changes revealed?

Posted in iPod by Conner Flynn on May 26th, 2009

iPod nano 5G, Next-Gen iPhone design changes revealed?Above is a possible snapshot of what the iPod nano 5G will look like, featuring a widened 1.5:1 aspect ratio while still keeping the Click Wheel from prior nano model, which sadly means no touchscreen controls here. A digital camera has also been included in back, although the placement might have your hands blocking it.

It will debut at the same time as the new iPod touch, which is sometime between July and September. Apparently, the next-generation iPhone will come in six versions: two storage capacities each for 3G, enhanced 3G (“3.5G/3.75G”), and China versions of the phone, which will have the same size and general design of the current model, but with a less scratchable matte plastic body.

USB 7 Port HUB switch for dual PC usageElecom of Japan has just introduced a few USB switches that will come with a 2- and 7-port USB hub. It allows you to share anywhere from two to seven USB-connected devices over a couple of computers without installing a private network.

Perfect if you and your wife want to share or for room mate situations, though you most likely would still want to set up a private network as their are more benefits. It’s a nice option to have though.

Mobile phone-controlled vacuum cleaner

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2009

Mobile phone-controlled vacuum cleanerSouth Korean telecom company KTF just announced a cleaning robot that can be controlled by a 3G cellphone. The Roomba can’t do that, now can it? The robot is called the CW100 and is the result of a collaboration with Microbot.

It’s a “smart” vacuum, like the Roomba. It can be controlled by phone, which the Roomba can’t, unless modded to do so. It uses an onboard video camera to send live images to the mobile phone, so if you see an untidy spot, the user can remotely control it using the keypad and clean it up.

Scope Node Mouse, as Precise as a Pen

Posted in Mouse by Conner Flynn on March 17th, 2009

Scope Node Mouse, as Precise as a PenElecom Japan introduced their latest hi-end mouse, which is a bit unusual. The Scope Node M-SN1UL. They’ve completely redone the design for “pen and paper” like precision for pointing at things with your favorite tool, the mouse.

It has a laser sensor (1600dpi) placed where a pen point is typically located in your hand. With the device’s off-center laser, Elecom claims a high level of precision. For some reason it also has a weird exposed scroll wheel, that looks kinda neat. It’s only available in Japan, so if you live anywhere else, you’ll have to make due with less than accurate pointing.

JAJAH turns your iPod Touch into an iPhone

Posted in iPod Touch by Conner Flynn on February 9th, 2009

JAJAH turns your iPod Touch into an iPhoneThis is a lot like Truphone, which we told you about in December. Leading IP telecommunications company JAJAH has announced a complete overhaul of the iPod Touch. They want to turn the device into a fully functional iPhone.

The new capabilities will enable carriers and non-carriers to launch the service under their own brand and provide customers with the ability to make low-cost phone calls and send SMS text messages to any phone in the world from their iPod Touch. Consumers would only need a Wi-Fi connection, no SIM card or contract. This is big news, what with the iPod Touch being one of the most popular consumer devices in the world.

Sharp SH001 8 megapixel camera phone with gossip feature

Posted in Sharp by Conner Flynn on January 29th, 2009

Sharp SH001 8 megapixel camera phone with gossip featureHere’s another Japan only phone. The Sharp SH001 from KDDi telecom. The clamshell sports an 8 Megapixel camera and has most of the functions you would expect from an entry level digital camera. It features Sharp’s ‘ProPix’, a proprietary picture conversion engine, auto focus and face recognition.

The phone comes with 740 MB of internal memory which you can expand on with a 2GB Micro SD card. This one is targeted at 20 to 30 year old females. If Sharp doesn’t have their attention with the other specs, the gossip feature surely should win them over. The Gossip feature activates noise canceling so you can be heard even when speaking slowly in crowded and noisy areas.

STC Livebox Router conceptThis innovative router design by Franco Marino Cagnina, developed for Saudi Telecom, will have your router sitting pretty, literally. The STC Livebox doubles as an elegant tech-flower vase.

The device features Wireless internet, Voice over IP, land line telephone and wired DSL. With it’s unique design, the STC Router bridges the gap between lifestyle and technology. Martha Stewart would call it a good thing. Women especially will appreciate the decor aspect of what otherwise would be just another piece of tech that clashes with the furniture.

Motorola wants to keep the Aura Phone off eBay

Posted in Motorola by Conner Flynn on November 3rd, 2008

Motorola wants to keep the Aura Phone off eBayIf you’re looking for a way to get around the £2,000 price tag associated with Motorola’s latest luxury phone, the Aura, get ready to be disappointed. The telecommunications company will be introducing a legal contract for new owners that prevents them from selling the Aura on eBay.

The only party they are legally allowed to sell the handset back to is…Motorola. I wonder just how legal that move actually is in itself. Apparently they are aiming to keep the Aura extremely exclusive. First off, the tactic won’t work. Secondly, that sort of contractual threatening will turn many buyers off. All we can say is, Good luck with your fancy phone sales.
