We’ve all heard that cellphone radiation can be bad for you, even if it does remain unproven. But a new study in mice suggests that using cellphones may help prevent some of the brain-wasting effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

After long-term exposure to electromagnetic waves like those in cell phones, mice that were genetically altered to develop Alzheimer’s performed as well on memory and thinking skill tests as healthy mice. So I guess cellphones could be good for us and bad at the same time.

HP just announced its new range of Electronic Skins, aka eSkins. eSkins will function as a new display technology to personalize consumer electronics. Boston-Power announced its Sonata battery technology a while back that promises to deliver like-new performance for up to three years and recharge much faster than comparable batteries available today. Intel and Micron’s joint venture in NAND flash technology, IM Flash Technologies, has announced mass production of 34nm, 32 gigabit multi-level cell NAND Flash device. This move puts the company in the lead of Flash technology ahead of the likes of Samsung and Toshiba with the only monolithic 32 Gb NAND chip that fits into a standard 48-lead thin small-outline package (TSOP).

The companies stated in the announcement that the development of the technology process is going along well and is actually ahead of schedule with the ability to provide companies to create greater capacities of NAND Flash memory for devices like cameras, phones, media players and computers at a lower production cost than what is currently available.

The people from CEA are the group behind the geek fantasia that is CES. CEA is into more than putting together one of the greatest displays of geek debauchery on the planet, it also does things like predict holiday electronics sales.

You might expect this holiday season to be slow with the sluggish economy around the world. According to the CEA, despite the economy shipments for Q4 2008 are expected to grow by 3.5% compared to Q4 2007 shipments.

The title says it all. Prisoners at any jail are not the brightest crayons in the crayola pack, but the prisoners in this jail really prove the point. Prison guards at Camp Jail were doing their daily clean up when they discovered that 37 prisoners had hidden mobile phones in their bodies. 30 of them were able to remove the phones without hospital treatment, but 7 members of this think-tank required surgery.

Although this is the largest single incident of this type prisoners often get caught with hidden phones – last year a UK prisoner required over 200 stitches and needed part of his bladder removed during surgery to remove a particularly large handset from his rectum.

Sony took the wraps today off an expanded line up of its nav-u personal navigation devices. These new models – the NV-U94T, NV-U84, NV-U74T and NV-U44 – price around $400, $350, $300 and $250 respectively and will be available in September.

Sony says new features of these four just added nav-u GPS units include more brand icons, search functionality and photo viewing features. The top dog of this group is the NV-U94T, adding “a photo viewer, audio/video player and stereo Bluetooth technology for streaming audio and making hands-free phone calls using compatible devices.” You can get full details on these models after the jump.
