Time Inc. and Apple to offer free iPad downloads to print magazine subscribers

Posted in Apple by Reuben Drake on May 2nd, 2011

Good news for magazine readers. Time Inc. has made a deal with Apple to allow print magazine subscribers to access the company’s iPad editions for free. Starting this week, those who subscribe to print versions of Sports Illustrated, Fortune, and Time will be able to download the iPad versions at no cost, directly within the magazines’ apps, as it should be.

iPad users still won’t be able to purchase exclusively digital subscriptions to Time Inc.’s publications. Time wants to incorporate digital subscriptions to its iPad model, but negotiations have hit some snags, mostly due to how Apple shares subscriber data. Publishers claim to need that data to apply the TV Everywhere model to magazines, but Apple says that the subscriber information should only be shared on an opt-in basis. It doesn’t seem like they will agree anytime soon.

It will also use the SpotPass passive connection feature that works even when no game is in the system and when its in sleep mode, to download new content.

PayPal 2.0 “Bumps” money between iPhones

Posted in Paypal by Conner Flynn on March 17th, 2010

PayPal has released an update for its iPhone/iPod Touch app. You can now “bump” money from your PayPal account into a friend’s if they are close by. If you both have PayPal accounts, you don’t all need iPhones to “bump” your money. You can still send money the traditional way by loading up the app and entering an email address, or choosing from a recent contact.

But if you have two iPhones running PayPal, it’s easier to set a dollar amount, move them close, then confirm that the “bump” means you’re transferring that cash.

The good news is that many of the new projectors announced this week are lower priced making them affordable replacements for HDTVs in the living room. The native resolution for the NP110 is 800 x 600 while the native resolution for the NP215 is 1024 x 768. The contrast ratio is 2000:1 and the lamps promise up to 5000 hours of life.

The legal copy in Apple’s “Legal Copy” ad

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on April 20th, 2009

The legal copy in Apple's "Legal Copy" adThe Mac VS. PC war is still raging, albeit in a quiet nerd way, not a full out battle with explosions. You’ve probably seen Apple’s new Hodgman ads. The “legal copy” ad is the most interesting. Whenever Hodgman says how easy PCs are to use, a bunch of fine print explodes upwards. The folks over at MacJournals have actually transcribed every word of it. Nearly two full pages. Here’s an excerpt:

To remove unneeded bloatware first open uninstaller, select applications to remove, and uninstall. To remove optional components, click start, go to all programs and open control panel, select remove components, select components you want to remove, select next, when done, select finish. Once initial prep is complete, PCs may then be easy to use under certain controlled conditions and when properly maintained. In order for PCs to achieve optimal performance on a regular basis and for long periods of time, routine maintenance should include (but is not limited to) the following: download and install updated anti-virus software, run anti-virus software, check for system updates, clean out registry, defragment hard drive, free up disk space, remove temporary Internet files, empty the recycle bin, remove unnecessary programs, run error check utility and fix file system errors.

Nokia announces software update for 5800 XpressMusic

Posted in Nokia by Shane McGlaun on March 30th, 2009

nokia5800-sb1There has never been a Nokia phone that I have been interested in. In fact most of the handsets on the market are boring by my jaded standards. I do like the iPhone, but I will say it’s getting a bit boring and I am looking for the next cool handset.

Nokia has been offering its 5800 XpressMusic handset for a while in Europe, and not so long ago it brought the device to America. There were some issues with connectivity that forced the phone off the market for a while shortly after is US launch.
