Mechanical Yoshi is on the rampage

Posted in Toys by Conner Flynn on December 16th, 2010

You might remember that awesome Mechanical Mario from earlier this year. Well, Donald “KodyKoala” Kennedy is at it again and has created a Yoshi version.

It is simply amazing like Mario. He used a Playmobile police station for Yoshi’s back and a couple of Lego laptops for the front display and keyboards. We’re not sure how tall it is, but we picture it rampaging over a large city causing mayhem.

Maybe one day soon they will put real pianos out of business as folks use a Kinect to practice their skills on a desk or make like Tom Hanks on the FAO Schwarz floor piano in the movie Big. We can’t wait to see what people do with this device next.

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on December 12th, 2010

Natural Motion has launched Jenga for the iPhone and the iPad. The game even features input from the designer of the original game, Leslie Scott. The game uses real-time 3D physics simulation to recreate the behavior of an actual wooden Jenga tower. Each block is affected by the surrounding blocks requiring the gamer to apply the same strategies that they would in the real world game.

There’s also a social dimension allowing users to compare their tower height with friends from around the world, or you can play the Pass’n’Play mode which allows up to four players to take turns playing on the same iPhone.

Reuters has some information suggesting that Microsoft is getting ready to launch a video subscription service for the XBox 360. The details are scarce and nobody knows yet how this will work, but Microsoft has several options.

The first option is to become a virtual cable operator and charge for bundles of channels. This is a model that we all know well and one that networks are familiar with. They could also create one app per channel, similar to what Roku does. It will be interesting to see what happens with this one.

Pole Climbing Bike Lock

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on November 29th, 2010

A team of bicyclists have come up with a great solution to bike theft with this pole-climbing bike lock created for Germany’s Conrad. We don’t know when this will go on sale, but the device straps around a light pole and carries your bike high into the air using a remote control.

Right now it’s way too big to carry around and what if someone puts their bike beneath yours? Once they work out those problems, it’s an awesome idea. As long as it doesn’t fall on someone.

Star Trek home automation system is awesome

Posted in Sci-Fi by Conner Flynn on November 28th, 2010

Star Trek nerds everywhere will be telling their number one’s to make it so, while doing number two in their pants after seeing this. This might be the coolest home automation center ever. Obviously it was created by a serious Trekkie.

It’s custom-built to be just like Star Trek’s LCARS user interface. Sadly, the rest of his house doesn’t look like the Enterprise, so he probably spends all of his time in this one room, which may or may not include a fish named Livingston.

Microsoft patent would let touchscreens make real keyboards

Posted in patents by Conner Flynn on November 28th, 2010

A new patent from Microsoft has been spotted and it could lead to touchscreens that could change shape to create keyboards and other tactile objects where none exist. It is called a technique for a “light-induced shape-memory polymer display screen”.

It can send ultraviolet light to a plastic layer above each pixel, changing its topography. Varying UV wavelengths would serve to make different parts hard or soft, creating bumps and ridges that could feel like a real surface with actual keys. This design could be used with projectors, though it might not be limited to projectors.

The iPhone communicates with the printer via the standard iPhone port, and the printer also acts as a charging station for the phone. The printer is compatible with iPhone, iPhone 2007, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4.

Posted in Apple TV by Conner Flynn on November 18th, 2010

The new Apple TV is pretty disappointing since it is so limited. It sits collecting dust like many Wiis do. So if Apple doesn’t decide to release Apps for it in the near future, jailbreakers certainly will. In fact, some hackers have managed to get a web browser running on the new Apple TV and also added Last.fm integration.

The latest apps were created by the folks over at Firecore, and they will be releasing a package for Apple TV called aTV Flash. A beta of the package should be released within the next couple of weeks.
