Netflix dominates iPad and consoles, Hulu dominates PCs

Posted in Netflix by Reuben Drake on July 27th, 2011

Netflix and Hulu dominate entirely separate sectors of digital streaming, according to a Nielsen study. Both are now available on many platforms, but Netflix is the dominant one on non-PCs, including iPads, game consoles, and media hubs, ranging from a three-to-one ratio on Apple’s tablet to seven or eight times higher.

Hulu isn’t a lame duck though. They win on computers, often by a wide margin, with 89 percent of its viewers watching on a computer versus just 42 percent of Netflix owners wanting to do the same. Networked media hubs like Roku boxes and smartphones were a close race, though they have a smaller viewing audience as a whole.

New iMac’s HDD upgrade options are very restricted

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on May 15th, 2011

PC fans will tell you that the PC platform is much more open and upgradable than gadgets in the Mac world. That’s true, however Mac fans can upgrade at least some things on most Mac notebooks and computers like say the hard drive and RAM. Many people buy new Mac computers and then upgrade it with aftermarket parts to save money. Those aftermarket parts are usually cheaper than getting the upgrade from Apple.

Well, it turns out that the new iMac computers have more restrictions on their upgrades than the older version of the iMac. And they may force you to buy Official Apple parts.

Only 20% of Google employees use Windows computers

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on May 11th, 2011

Google co-founder Sergey Brin says that as many as 80 percent of Google’s employees are no longer using Windows computers. The comments came from an interview with All Things Digital, and suggests that the majority of Google employees are working with the company’s own Chrome OS rather than other platforms. And why not? If you work for Google, you might as well use Google’s OS.

“I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with Windows,” Brin said. “It has a lot of great security features. But I think the complexity of managing your computer is really torturing users.” He claims that Chrome OS does not “put the burden of managing the computer” on users. By next year he hopes that even more employees are using the company’s OS.

Last typewriter maker shuts down

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on April 27th, 2011

Even though it took awhile, it now seems that the typewriter’s days are officially numbered. Godrej & Boyce closed down the last manufacturing plant of typewriters in the world on Wednesday. In the world! The factory was based in Mumbai, India.

As you may have noticed, the device has been replaced by computers, printers, tablets and keyboards. I’m surprised the old guy lasted this long. Even until 2009, the factory still produced between 10,000 to 12,000 typewriters per year. The demand now? About 800.

Survey shows iPad’s effect on PC market

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on April 12th, 2011

A recent survey by Google-owned AdMob showed that many consumers are spending more time on their tablets and less time sitting uncomfortably at their PCs, using smartphones, watching TV, listening to the radio, and of course reading those outdated paper books. The are neglecting many things in favor of tablet use. AdMob expects tablet customers to reach 165 million devices over the next two years.

1,430 tablet owners participated in the survey, among these 77% said they spend less time with their personal computers after buying a tablet, 43% said they use their tablets more than their personal computers, and 28% say that they now use a tablet as their primary computer. 68% said they spent at least 1 hour each day with the device, 84% use it mainly for playing games, while 78% search for information. It’s very clear that the tablet is King. But we already knew that. PCs are on the way out, but not completely gone yet.

NZXT H2 Classic keeps things quiet

Posted in Computers by Conner Flynn on March 23rd, 2011

Gaming computers can get pretty loud. Especially if you have built it yourself, with powerful video cards, CPUs and fans all doing their thing. Loudly. Power does come with a price and that price is often ungodly noise. Well, NZXT has a new case that might help.

The H2 Classic is said to deliver “a new era of whisper-quiet gaming.” That is literally music to our tired ears. It is so quiet thanks to a layer of noise dampening foam between the gear inside and the outside. Aside from that the case uses a three-phase fan controller that allows you to put the fans at 40%, 70%, and 100% speed.
