Netflix dominates iPad and consoles, Hulu dominates PCs

Posted in Netflix by Reuben Drake on July 27th, 2011

Netflix and Hulu dominate entirely separate sectors of digital streaming, according to a Nielsen study. Both are now available on many platforms, but Netflix is the dominant one on non-PCs, including iPads, game consoles, and media hubs, ranging from a three-to-one ratio on Apple’s tablet to seven or eight times higher.

Hulu isn’t a lame duck though. They win on computers, often by a wide margin, with 89 percent of its viewers watching on a computer versus just 42 percent of Netflix owners wanting to do the same. Networked media hubs like Roku boxes and smartphones were a close race, though they have a smaller viewing audience as a whole.

USB Bell Dings When You get Mail

Posted in USB by Reuben Drake on July 25th, 2011

The bell has now been merged with your computer via USB. Instead of computer generated dings to tell you when you have new email, this bell will ding to let you know. This would probably get old after a while, but at least you will know when you have mail.

The USB bell uses an electromagnet to activate the bells sound. It’s easy to build, you just need a few parts and then you’ll have to do some soldering.

Microsoft says no to Windows Phone 7 based tablets

Posted in Microsoft by Conner Flynn on July 13th, 2011

Sorry Windows Phone 7 fans. Microsoft has announced that there will not be any tablets running on the Windows Phone 7 operating system. The company views tablets as more of a personal computer, not a mobile device.

All hope is not lost though. A Windows based tablet might show up using the Windows 8 operating system, which should arrive in 2012, and this will be the only tablet OS to be issued by the company. I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

We aren’t talking about Google Voice, but it’s similar. MightyText will route calls and text messages into Google Chrome instead of sending them to your email. Pretty handy when you lose your phone or leave it behind.

The new service was started by former Google employee, Maneesh Arora. It’s basically a routing service for text messages and calls. It’s in Beta now.

Rubik’s Cube Speaker

Posted in Speakers by Conner Flynn on July 6th, 2011

Here’s another geeky item for your desk or your shelf. This speaker will connect to almost any music source, via a stereo jack and power comes from your computer’s USB port, and a 5W speaker plays your favorite songs. But sadly you can’t solve this cube. It’s just for music.

Great addition to your nerd gadget stash at just $30 even if you can’t twist the thing and puzzle your brain. It’s still a neat retro speaker.
