Printers have now learned to stand upright. Maybe soon they will learn to beg for paper as well so they can get an ink treat. This is Lexmark’s first all-in-one printer with an upright design. It’s called the Genesis and it sports a 4.3-inch capacitive color touchscreen display for access to the printer controls and menus.

NEC PA241W LCD for design pros ships

Posted in NEC by Shane McGlaun on February 2nd, 2010

Years ago, I worked for a company that had its own marketing department. The people there were always complaining because the colors they saw on the screen of the computer wasn’t what printed out on the printer. This can be a big issue for designers and NEC has a new screen specifically for these users.

The screen is called the PA241W and is 24-inches with a 1920 x 1200 resolution. The big thing about the LCD is the 10-bit IPS panel with 14-bit lookup table that allows for billions of possible colors. NEC says the screen is good for 102% of the NTSC color gamut and 99.3% of the Adobe RGB gamut.

On the website they’ve set up for the end of year nengajo cards and they show how easy it is to use one of their Colorio printers to print off a color postcard with a picture of your face over a cute picture of 2010′s year of the tiger character.

When you hold it up to a webcam it brings the augmented reality to life. If you like that sort of thing, a video can be found here.

Epson announces new printers on the cheap

Posted in Epson by Shane McGlaun on May 20th, 2009

epsonnx515-sbOne of the big problems with printers today isn’t that they print too slowly or that they can’t print images. The big problem is the cost of the printer and ink. Often you can replace your whole printer for the price you pay for new ink cartridges alone. I once owned a printer that cost about $50 to replace the ink tanks.

Epson has announced a new line of all-in-one printers called the NX series that offers nice features at low prices. All of the printers will copy, scan, and print. The line all use Epson DURABrite inks as well. The line includes the NX115, NX215, NX415, and NX515 models.

Xerox launches solid-ink color printer

Posted in Printers by Conner Flynn on May 7th, 2009

Xerox launches solid-ink color printerXerox’s new ColorQube printer promises to revolutionize color-printing using a wax ink. The ink can reduce the cost per page by as much as 62%. This new ink doesn’t sacrifice any printer functions either. Like other multi-function printers, the ColorQube can print, copy, scan and fax and be networked by several people.

So how does it work? The ink is melted and sprayed onto a spinning drum which deposits it on the page. Don’t get too excited. The machine costs $20,000. But as the technology progresses it will get cheaper over time. And even at that price huge companies could see a long term savings in cost.

Egg printer makes the best Easter eggsIf you’re getting bored with eating eggs, why not spice things up with this fancy egg printer. Those plain white shells will soon be festive. The Egg Drawer puts pretty pictures on that incredible edible canvas.

With this and the Scan Toaster, your entire breakfast can be a work of art. Sadly, we can’t find any details for this thing, just the Flickr photostream. We need more of these by Easter next year. Looks like you can swap out any color marker for another.
