Alaska Airlines introduces iPad flying manuals for pilots

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on May 29th, 2011

The iPad truly is everywhere now. The iPad will now be replacing the flying manuals at Alaska Airlines. Alaska Airlines will be the first domestic airline to do this as part of an ongoing effort to use technology to enhance flight safety, improve efficiency and also protect the environment.

They will be issuing the 1 1/2-pound iPad instead of the typical 25 pounds of paper flight manuals to all pilots, and make it mandatory for them to carry it with them. The process should be complete by mid-June. This comes after the airline did about 100 tests last spring and winter.

JBL AirPlay-Enabled On Air Wireless Speaker System Ships

Posted in Speakers by Conner Flynn on April 11th, 2011

JBL has now started shipping their new On Air Wireless Speaker System which is specially designed for iOS devices. This is among the first AirPlay-enabled speakers capable of streaming iTunes 10 music or Internet radio directly from your computer. We also love that it looks like it belongs in a spaceship cockpit.

This speaker system can use your existing Wi-Fi or Ethernet to connect to your PC or Mac iTunes library and makes the link with Apple’s AirPlay technology. It also sports a small LCD screen so you can see the album artwork and song info when an iOS device is not docked.

iPad to be used in airplane cockpits

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 7th, 2011

The iPad truly is being used everywhere. Now the Federal Aviation Administration has granted early approval to use them in airplane cockpits, as major commercial airline companies including Delta want to do away with paper maps.

It’s a great idea, but maybe they could have one or two paper maps still. Just in case. The FAA has also started to grant approval for “electronic flight bags,” alternatively known as computers for aviation use in the last decade. Let’s hope the pilots don’t get too distracted playing Angry Birds or watching movies.

Sure that’s pretty expensive, but like we said this thing is hard to beat. It practically looks like it was ripped from an airplane cockpit. Might as well be good to yourself this Christmas.

steelcase14inlcdarm-sbLarge LCDs are a great way to get more information on your screen at once. Even better than a single large LCD is several large LCDs, the catch is finding room on an average desk to sit more than one 24-inch screen.

Steelcase offers all sorts of office chairs and other furniture and has announced a new LCD arm called the Eyesite. The arm can be configured to support up to three 24-inch LCDs in16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios. When not needed the arm also folds almost flat to give more desk space.

Audi Shark flying car concept

Posted in Automotive by Conner Flynn on March 2nd, 2009

Audi Shark flying car conceptIs it a shark? A submarine? A flying car? All of the above. And it’s the most badass flying car/shark/submarine I’ve ever seen. Kazim Doku’s Shark concept is how he envisions the future of Audi’s design: as a flying car. Design inspirations came from motorcycles and airplanes, and obviously underwater vessels.

Even the interior gets some sporty seats with the cockpit’s sculpture, so you can sit comfortably while flying to work and playing with some buttons etc. Check out a video below. Who needs roads when you can fly in this kind of style?

St. Louis Aerial Clock Radio is awesomely antique

Posted in Clocks by Conner Flynn on December 16th, 2008

St. Louis Aerial Clock Radio is awesomely antiqueYou have to love these antique designed radios. And it looks all the better for not having an iPod dock. The St Louis Aerial Clock Radio was inspired by airplane cockpit controls of the 1920’s. The radio has toggle switches and a tuning dial that lights up.

Probably the most interesting feature is that it displays the time in 4 separate circular digital windows. It’s constructed of Steel and plastic and will only play AM/FM channels. Not a single input for you MP3 player, which is pretty refreshing. The Aerial Clock Radio retails for £49.95, which is a bargain for this kind of design.

Evangelion USB Flash Drive

Posted in USB Flash Drives by Conner Flynn on September 8th, 2008

Evangelion USB Flash DriveFans of Japanese manga Evangelion will love this USB flash drive inspired by the series so much that they’ll toss their old flash drives aside. Then there are those who will keep it in the box and preserve it like an Egyptian mummy in the hopes that it is a collector’s item that will make them rich one day. Dream big my geek friends. Dream big. When was the last time you heard someone say, “I’m so glad I kept that USB drive in the box. It made me the millionaire I am today.” Whatever the case, the flash drive is designed like the Mecha’s cockpit and will come in 2GB capacities. Just use the damn thing!

NASA concept car spins 360 degrees

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on August 18th, 2008

NASA concept car spins 360 degrees
This concept car called NASA sports an ultra cool look, but the really interesting thing about it is the car’s ability to spin a full 360 degrees on the spot. It can also drive sideways. The design comes from Czech industrial design students Marek Kedzierski and Michal Vlèek and it’s a finalist in the Škoda Auto, competition.

It gets even more interesting. NASA has no doors, the whole canopy lifts up revealing in-line seating for two. Once the passengers are inside, the cockpit closes over the passengers, fitting them snuggly around the neck and head restraint. The only problem I see is that this car capable of going in any direction keeps the driver faced in one direction. Well, that and the fact that it looks like you could be easily decapitated in a car accident.
