RIM Cutting 2,000 Jobs

Sad news for folks working at RIM. Research In Motion has announced that they will be cutting 2,000 jobs. That’s about 10 percent of their workforce. They will also be moving some of their executives to different positions in the company.

It’s part of a streamlining at RIM and anyone who looked at the situation would have seen it coming. The company has struggled to compete with Google’s Android OS and Apple’s iOS devices, and has been losing its smartphone sales share for awhile.

Facebook glitch exposes private videos

If you have any private videos on Facebook, you better pay attention. TechCrunch first got wind of this problem and it could be embarrassing for some of you with sensitive videos. The glitch apparently has to do with restricted-access settings for videos posted to Facebook and shared with supposedly designated friends.

The titles, thumbnails, and descriptions for videos were mistakenly visible to all of a user’s friends, regardless of which had been granted access to the clips. And a list of people tagged in each clip was visible as well.

ASUS ET2011AUTB All-In-One Desktop PC

A new all-in-one desktop PC from ASUS called the ET2011AUTB is a great space-saving machine with a 20-inch 1600 x 900 multi-touch display, a 1.60GHz AMD E-350 processor, an AMD A50M FCH chipset, 2GB RAM, a 500GB hard drive, a webcam, a DVD SuperMulti drive, an SD card slot, and WiFi.

It runs on either Windows 7 Home Premium (SP1) or Professional (SP1). The ASUS ET2011AUTB will arrive in August for about $800 with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 or about $890 with Professional SP1.

iFixit tears down new MacBook Air

iFixit has a new MacBook Air. You know what that means.Tearing it open and checking it out. So what did they find. There’s the new Thunderbolt port of course and the fancy new keyboard backlighting. But inside is where all the good stuff is.

There’s an Intel Core i5 processor of course and a Bluetooth 4.0 chip and we also learned that the MacBook Air scores a four out of ten for ease of repair, so it might be best to leave this job to the experts. After all this toy is expensive.

Motorola Defy+ rumored for AT&T

Word is that a slightly upgraded version of Motorola’s Defy Android smartphone may soon arrive at AT&T. If this rumor turns out to be accurate, the handset will get support for 850MHz, 1,900MHz and 2,100MHz HSPA bands, which are used by AT&T and some Canadian carriers.

Differences from the original device are said to include a 1GHz OMAP 3620 processor instead of the 800MHz CPU, and Android 2.3.3. Aside from that, RAM, storage space, camera specs and the 3.7-inch display should remain the same.

Nexus S Coming To AT&T July 24th

Google has announced that their Nexus S Android smartphone will be arriving on the AT&T network later this week. July 24th to be exact. The Nexus S smartphone has Android 2.3, a 4” Super AMOLED screen, a 1 GHz processor for 3D graphics, front and rear facing cameras and support for NFC. Basically everything you want.

The Nexus S also has the latest Google mobile apps, like Google Earth, Google Maps with Navigation, Google Talk with video chat, Google Voice and Voice Actions, and access to over 250,000 apps in the Android Market.

Pantech MIRACH IS11PT smartphone

Most phones are not very rugged. Drop it or get it wet and that’s the end. Well, Pantech has a new smartphone that is designed to be both dustproof and waterproof: the MIRACH IS11PT smartphone. It manages to be durable without looking like it.

Some features include a second-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8655 SoC with a 1GHz CPU, a 3.7-inch WVGA screen with a 480 x 800 resolution, and Android’s Gingerbread 2.3 platform.

2011 MacBook Air Announced

Apple has announced the new 2011 MacBook Air, which will come with the latest version of Apple’s OS, OS X Lion. There is an 11 inch MacBook Air and a 13 inch MacBook Air available and both feature Intel’s Thunderbolt technology. The 11 inch model comes with either a 1GHz dual core Intel Core i5 processor or a 1.8GHz dual core Intel Core i7 processor. Your choice. All models now have a backlit keyboard as well.

The base model has a 64GBSSD and the top model a 128GB SSD that can be upgraded to a 256GB SSD. Other specs include 2GB of DDR3 RAM, which can be upgraded to 4GB, Intel HD Graphics 3,000, a FaceTime camera, two USB 2.0 ports, a Thunderbolt port, WiFi, Bluetooth and a pair of stereo speakers.

Samsung Galaxy S II Coming To The US In August

Samsung has to be very happy about sales of their new Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone in Europe and other countries. They have already sold more than 3 million S II handsets, but in the US, Samsung still hasn’t released it.

Now it looks like we may have a firm launch date. According to the president of Samsung mobile, Shin Jong-Kyun, the Galaxy S II will arrive in the US in August, but we still don’t know an exact date. To refresh your memory, the Samsung Galaxy S II features a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus display, with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, and also comes with a dual core 1.2GHz processor, 16GB of built in storage and a microSD card slot.

Lenovo IdeaPad P1 Tablet

Lenovo is ready to launch a new Windows 7 tablet, even though Windows 8 is coming soon. The IdeaPad P1 features a 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) capacitive touchscreen display with a 1.5GHz Intel processor.

Other features include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a front-facing 2-megapixel webcam, USB 2.0, a microSD memory card slot, up to 2GB DDR2 RAM and up to a 64GB SSD. Lenovo is expecting to launch the IdeaPad P1 in Q4 of this year. They should have waited for Windows 8.
