Hewlett Packard is showing off at CES this week several new consumer focused laptops as it reveals its 2008 product line up. One of these is the HP Pavilion HDX series Entertainment Notebook PC, priced at around $2,000 or so, depending upon configuration.

The HP Pavilion HDX series Entertainment Notebook PC offers 512 MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS video graphics and the latest Intel Core 2 Extreme and Intel Core 2 Duo processor technologies. You can outfit this laptop with Blu-ray and HD DVD playback and enjoy HD video on the notebook’s 20.1-inch diagonal WUXGA XHD Ultra Brightview display.

Bang & Olufsen is introducing the new BeoVision 8 LCD display at this years CES event, providing what they describe as “a flexible LCD display with superb sound and picture at an entry-level price point.” Anyone familiar with Bang & Olufsen likely knows them for producing very high-end home theater system products, so keep in mind that their definition of “entry-level” is all relative. With an MSRP of $3950.00, this 32-inch LCD is at the high-end of this guys budget.

The display is of course designed with as much style in mind as it has performance and functionality. The BeoVision 8 adds quality sound to its quality flat screen picture with a downward facing bass speaker and front units designed for reproducing human voices. The picture on the 32-inch screen has a special glare polarizer and the absence of glass in front of the screen in order to give less glare in well-lit rooms and better contrast, which is should for that kind of bank.

Panasonic and Comcast are tag teaming to bring Comcast customers a portable DVR so they can record programming at home and take it with them wherever they go. The Panasonic AnyPlay P-DVR Model TZ-LC100 will be available beginning in early 2009 and is being showcased at CES.

The Panasonic AnyPlay P-DVR Model TZ-LC100 is developed by Panasonic and co-branded with Comcast. It’s got 60GB of hard drive storage space, an 8.5″ folding LCD display screen and integrated stereo speakers. Also included are dual headphone jacks.

Magellan is showcasing a new line of RoadMate GPS units this week at CES that feature a widescreen display and optional traffic integration in the higher end models. The new 1400 series RoadMate models use a larger 4.3-inch widescreen touchscreen with three new models varying in features and price from $299 at the low end up to $399 with all the bells and whistles.

All the new models feature the widescreen view, 3D mapping, trip planner, QuickSpell for fast entering of addresses and an SD card slot for maps. The 1400, which is the $299 base model comes with maps of the continental US, Hawaii and Puerto Rico along with points of interest. Moving up to the RoadMate 1412, Magellan tacks on text-to-speech, maps of Canada and Alaska and another $150 to the price of the 1400.

Targus wants you to enjoy your music as you roam down the street, sharing it as you go to others who may or may not want to hear it. The computer case maker has unveiled at CES the SonicPak, an audio backpack priced at around $100.

The Targus SonicPak is much like your typical gear carrying backpack with its padded compartment for laptop PCs, side mesh water bottle holders, adjustable, padded shoulder straps, molded carrying handle, oversized zipper pulls for easy gripping and a fully equipped interior workstation that includes plenty of pockets for your accessories.

LaCie, a developer of innovative hard drive units, is unveiling a number of interesting new products at the Consumer Electronics Show. One of these is the LaCie LaCinema Premier, currently available in a 500GB capacity for around $230.

The LaCie LaCinema Premier is a self-described multimedia hard drive equipped with USB 2.0 ports. It’s designed to hold digital music, video and photo files transferred onto it from a host computer. Once transferred you are supposed to connect it to a home theater system so you can enjoy your digital entertainment through features like optical output and 1080i video upscaling.

Hauppauge has some handy new TV tuners hitting the market this week at CES 2008, one of which is the WinTV-HVR-950Q. This USB-based tuner stick’s claim to fame is it’s ability to not only receive the popular NTSC analog cable and over-the-air ATSC high-def formats for North America, but also the ability to pick up clear QAM digital cable TV.

The WinTV-HVR-950Q tuner stick connects to a PC via USB and allows users to watch and record television on their desktop PC or notebook through a standard TV cable. The tuner comes with a credit card sized remote control to navigate channels, recording options and the ability to pause and resume live TV. It also comes with Hauppauge’s SoftPVR and SoftMCE software for MPEG-2 encoding. This allows the device to record television to the computers hard drive without needed some expensive MPEG encoder.

Bowers & Wilkins is showcasing some rather interesting new pieces of audio gear during CES. One of these is the Bowers & Wilkins Liberty, a new integrated wireless entertainment system which will launch this fall.

The Bowers & Wilkins Liberty is a 5.1 system which sports wireless, cable-free speakers. The range of products in this system can include four speaker models and one combined digital radio and disc player with a wireless transmitter. The four speakers are the three-way, floor standing XTW 8, the two-way XTW 2 and XTW Centre bookshelf/stand speakers, and the PVW 1 subwoofer.

Linsys has a new wireless gaming adapter they are showing off at the annual CES conference this week in Las Vegas, boasting it as the first dual-band wireless-N gaming adapter on the market. The WGA600N rids the need for stringing CAT-5 cable from your router across the house and into the room with your game console(s) by providing a fast wireless adapter to connect them.

The new gaming router from Linksys will connect to the ethernet port of your Xbox, Playstation or Gamecube and bring online gaming or head-to-head matches with other games to your console without having to string the wires. The adapter can then connect to older 802.11a/b/g networks if needed or gets higher bandwidth when its available through a wireless-N network. According to Linksys the setup is pretty simple too, with no drivers needed. Just plug the adapter into the Ethernet port of your console and it will find the network and connect up.

Digital picture frame announcements are pretty common right now at CES. What’s to make one stand out? Perhaps a touch screen? That’s at least part of the idea behind RealEase’s Shogo, priced at around $300.

The Shogo is a stylish looking eight-inch digital picture frame which is touch screen and also wireless. The touch screen interface allows for navigation of menus to select various photo albums and other content for viewing. The wireless function lets you pull down from a special Web site pictures you upload and other digital content such as weather forecasts and RSS feeds.

iFrogz announced the release of Thumpz, today at CES 2008 in Las Vegas. Thumpz is currently designed for the 3rd generation iPod nano and will also be available for the iPod Classic and incorporated into the Tadpole case. It’s a 100% silicone case with speaker that gives you a compact, more stylish way to listen to music.

The new Thumpz uses a passive speaker technology that offers great sound without the added bulk of batteries. Just slide the iPod into speaker case and connect through the headphone jack. It only extends the length of the iPod about an inch. It claims to give you full protection and you can still share your music and videos without the need to remove the case or plug it into other speakers.

Razer has brought to CES some great gaming accessories for high end players. One of those which is now shipping is the Razer Mako, a 2.1 desktop audio system priced at around $400.

The Razer Mako, as you can see from the photo, has a very unique look to it among desktop audio systems. It consists of two bi-amplified satellites (2 x 50 watts each) with DSP control and a powered subwoofer. Total system power is around 300 watts and the system is also THX certified.

DXG USA announced today the new DXG-565V 5 Megapixel combo digital camcorder/camera/MP3 player/voice recorder/webcam — all in one, with a large 2.4” TFT LCD screen and 32MB of built-in storage. The DXG-565V features a new sleek camcorder-shaped design and comes in 5 new trendy colors sure to be a hit with teens: Metallic Pink, Ruby Red, Deep-Sea Blue, Gun Metal, and Midnight Black.

It’s not just about good looks though. The DXG-565V also records DVD-quality MPEG-4 video at 720 x 480 D1 resolution with sound and captures still images at up to 12 Megapixels.

I bring you more CES 2008 goodness. The On Time 200ID lets you wake up to your iPod, iPhone, radio, or a simple buzzer. If you want to connect other devices, it also has a 1/8th-inch line input. The one-piece speaker has a backlit LCD as well as touch-sensitive controls, and a backup battery to preserve your settings if power is interrupted.

The On Time 400IHD is pretty similar, but adds dual alarms and an HD Radio receiver for picking up HD stations. It also supports iTunes tagging; just press a button when you hear something you like, and when you sync your iPod in iTunes, it will let you find and buy it quickly.

Bang & Olufsen have announced their EarSet 3, as a “unique mobile accessory” pairing music headphones and a phone headset in a single device. They bridge your cell phone headset and MP3 player earphones in one. I know, that doesn’t seem very unique, but what are you gonna do? The company’s first stereo headset with a built-in microphone is compatible with the Apple iPhone.

The 1.09 oz set has been developed to closely match the contours and curves of each ear, ensuring that no sound escapes. The ear buds include foam rubber covers and should stay firmly and comfortably in place.
