Acer Iconia Tab A501 for AT&T hits the FCC

Posted in Acer by Conner Flynn on June 13th, 2011

You might remember that in March, AT&T announced plans to offer Acer’s Iconia Tab A501, which is a 3G version of Acer’s A500 Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet. Well, now the A501 passed through the FCC, with support for AT&T’s GSM 850 and 1900 bands, as well as WCDMA II and V bands. FCC test reports also show support for HSUPA and HSDPA protocols, but there is no mention of HSPA+.

AT&T will release the A501 in the second quarter of 2011, so we should see the device very soon even though we have no info on pricing.

Nexus 3 spotted?

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on May 29th, 2011

Rumor is that Google has been working on a new Nexus handset and now we may have a brief glimpse at it thanks to folks at TechHog who have a photograph that is supposed to be a prototype of the Nexus 3. The phone is apparently being manufactured by HTC.

It has a front facing camera, and is being tested on HSPA+ and Sprint CDMA networks. So it looks like Google will launch the phone on Sprint since the carrier has been working with Google on Google Voice and Google Wallet. Other than that, we know nothing little else. However Techhog was asked to remove the images and info, so that pretty much confirms things.

Mophie Juice Pack Plus now with universal iPhone 4 support

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Reuben Drake on May 19th, 2011

Mophie has just outed the Juice Pack Plus external battery case for the iPhone 4. The 2,000mAh battery more than doubles the iPhone 4′s life and is the largest-capacity and the first to work with both GSM and CDMA iPhone 4s. It’s made of durable rubber and don’t worry about it bulking up your iPhone too much, it adds just 1mm to the thickness of Mophie’s Juice Pack Air case.

To celebrate the launch, a special edition of the case in purple is being released. Only 3,000 will be made. Other colors available include all black or black with cyan, magenta or yellow banding.

HTC Trophy could hit Verizon on May 5

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on May 2nd, 2011

Verizon’s long-delayed and long awaited version of the HTC Trophy might just finally show up this week. We hope. A new rumor has the Windows Phone 7 device shipping on May 5, though the rumor didn’t specify a price or explain why it was delayed from the April 15 date on the Verizon roadmap.

The device features a 3.8-inch 480×800 screen, a 1GHz Snapdragon chip, and a five-megapixel camera. Verizon’s edition might have dual-mode CDMA and GSM but we know it will ship with Microsoft’s NoDo update for copy-and-paste text and other upgrades. Software changes include Slacker Radio and a My Verizon Mobile account app.

The Sprint version of the Nexus S has been available for pre-order for a while now, but things just got a bit more official. We have a date. And that date is May 8th. You’ll have to do the usual two-year commitment with Sprint and pay your $200 of course.

You won’t have long to wait now. The device is identical to the Nexus S on T-Mobile’s airwaves except for the addition of CDMA and a WiMAX radio. It features a 4-inch Super AMOLED display and a 1GHz processor with dedicated graphics support and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

HTC Merge official press shots

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on April 7th, 2011

By now we’ve all seen the HTC Merge, so these press shots don’t show us anything we don’t already know, it just confirms that this Android-powered QWERTY slider is bound for Verizon any time now. And that is welcome news.

In fact, the CDMA Desire Z will likely hit shelves before the end of the week, because regional carrier Alltel has already begun taking pre-orders on its own version of this 800MHz, 3.8-inch handset. We know you’ve been waiting for this one.

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on March 15th, 2011

HTC’s Arrive handset has now been listed at online retailer Wirefly, where pre-orders are currently underway and priced at $150 with a two-year contract. The device is Sprint’s CDMA version of the 7 Pro, a Windows Phone 7 handset that features a tilt-slider QWERTY keyboard. Both share a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU and a five-megapixel camera, but the Arrive takes the integrated storage up to 16GB.

Sprint has also customized the device with its own home tile and with preloaded apps for Sprint TV and other content like NASCAR Sprint Cup. The Arrive is set to ship on March 20.

White iPhone 4 coming in April?

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2011

According to Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the white iPhone 4 is finally going into mass production this month. The goal is apparently to ship them in April, though the initial run will likely be restricted to GSM models and not include the CDMA version by Verizon. Right now we don’t know of any timeframe for a white CDMA phone.

Apple has promised white models since the iPhone 4′s launch way back in June of 2010. But Apple has had to delay several times and their most recent goal is for a “spring” release. And when the iPad 2 was announced last week, Steve Jobs emphasized that white tablets would be available at the same time as black ones.

Samsung Stealth spotted

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2011

The Samsung Stealth(SCH-i520) has been spotted in the wild and it looks like it will be arriving in mid-April. It might even arrive before HTC’s much delayed Thunderbolt, and if it does Samsung will beat HTC and be the first 4G LTE phone on Verizon’s network.

The Samsung Stealth features a 4.3″ Super AMOLED + display, a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, 8 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front camera, LTE/CDMA radios, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, HDMI-out and Android 2.2. Nothing on price yet, but we will know more when it is announced officially.

Non-Verizon Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Android phone passes through FCC

Posted in Sony Ericsson by Conner Flynn on March 1st, 2011

The Xperia Play has been officially announced for Verizon’s network when it arrives in the US this year, but according to some reports, this might not be the case after all. That’s because an Xperia Play recently passed through the FCC, but it doesn’t have any CDMA or 4G LTE radios that would allow the phone to run on Verizon’s network.

The phone packs radios that would allow it to work on UMTS frequencies (900/2100mHz), not what Verizon uses. However there could be a simple explanation. There may be a simultaneous release of the Xperia Play on multiple networks (in which case, the Verizon version of the phone hasn’t been through the FCC yet), or Sony Ericsson has decided to release the phone on a different carrier for some reason.

HTC Arrive announced on Sprint

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on February 24th, 2011

Sprint is ready to announce the first ever CDMA Windows Phone 7, which will be making its debut on Sprint next month. It’s called the HTC Arrive and it will be the first time that a WP7 device will be running on a CDMA network.

This phone features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 3.6″ WVGA display, and other specs that we’ve been seeing on the other WP7 phones like a 1GHz processor, 16GB of internal storage, and a 5 megapixel camera.

Verizon iPhone 4 gets a teardown

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on February 7th, 2011

As usual, the folks at iFixit have torn apart a new gadget. This time it is the Verizon iPhone 4. Of course they found the expected differences, but they also found that the phone has a slightly lighter battery than its counterpart, that the mechanical vibrator has been redesigned and moved from the top right corner to the bottom right of the phone and that the phone has a Qualcomm baseband chip.

The chip is a Qualcomm MDM660 chip that supports HSPA+ data rates up to 14.4 Mbps, and is the same chip used in the Droid Pro. So the chip technically supports both GSM and CDMA, although Apple has decided not to take advantage of that capability for whatever their reasons are.
