If you are old enough to remember listening to music on cassette tapes, then chances are you still have a lot of cassettes laying around. Why not listen to some of that old music again and convert those tapes to MP3s. Thanko’s cassette tape to MP3 converter, called Cassette Mate will help.

The Cassette Mate connects to your computer through a USB port and the software lets users save the music and recordings as MP3 files. It will even identify the breaks between songs and saves them as separate tracks.

TDK was a big name back in the days of cassettes, but they really haven’t done anything in the last many years, until recently with their retro boombox, and now this portable stereo. And judging by how awesome these devices look, we are glad to have them back.

The Sound Cube costs $300 and is part of TDK’s Life on Record audio series. The 17-pound portable enclosure measures 9.8″ x 9.8″ x 9.8″ and features a pair of 5-1/4″ full-range coax drivers, and the other two sides have passive reflectors that look like speakers. You place it in the center of your room and it pumps sound out.

Blu-ray recorders with integrated hard drives are no big deal, but Panasonic is offering something different in their DMR-BR30 that was announced for the Japanese market. It features a slot for swappable hard drives. The idea must be to mimic VHS cassettes. It’s not a bad idea really.

The problem is that you won’t be able to swap just any hard drive. You’ll need to buy Panasonic’s DY-HDD500 500GB hard drives for $240 each. It connects via a USB connection and is only supported in this recorder. Users will be able to copy videos from Blu-ray discs or DVDs to the hard drive or vice versa. But only if you have that hard drive.

The classic music player that allowed people to take their music anywhere has been officially retired. Ah, the memories. The original cassette version of the Sony Walkman sold 200 million units worldwide over the past 30 years and now it will no longer be manufactured.

A new concept media player has surfaced that has the Sony brand. It’s not an official Sony concept apparently and it is called the Eclipse. The Eclipse has a solar panel on the back that gathers all the power the thing needs to operate. It has integrated speakers and a touchscreen for viewing video content.

Feeling nostalgic for the old days, but love your modern iPhone? If you said yes to both, then check this out. This iPhone cassette case is the best of both worlds. The case is functional enough to keep your iPhone free of scratches, while looking like an old mix tape.

The best part is that you can actually listen to music from your iPhone when in the case. So in a way, you really are listening to a cassette. Pretty cool.

Look if you haven’t given up on cassette tapes by now, you probably never will. But if you ever want to let that old cassette player rest in peace, then the Novak Cassette to Digital Converter is what you need to transfer your old cassettes into digital formats.

If you thought the tape format was deader than a cassette tape, think again. At least two companies are still playing with magnetic tape. IBM and FujiFilm have spent the better part of three years in order to achieve a new record in areal data density on linear magnetic tape.

They have results, having successfully recorded data onto a dual-coat barium ferrite prototype magnetic tape at a density of 29.5 billion bits per square inch. That’s 39 times denser than current magnetic tapes. Neither company has announced when this will be available.

This Cassette Tape Measure is pure 80s on the outside and pure measuring tape on the inside. It’s a product that’s funny and useful at the same time. How can you not buy one for $8? It’s labeled “Professional Sound”, while it very unprofessionally exclaims, “Pull me!”. Seems rude.

You can either buy this for $8 or try to make your own. Just make sure that if you do make your own, that you actually put a measuring tape inside. I made one once and forgot to do exactly that. The result was measurements like 1/4 of Night Ranger’s Sister Christian intro or 1/16 of Don’t fear the Reaper. And the tape took forever to wind back inside too.
