Acer recalls 22,000 laptops

Posted in Acer by Conner Flynn on January 10th, 2010

You might remember that back in October Acer had to recall some Aspire laptops. Well, now the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued recalls on Acer’s AS3410, AS3410T, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ, and AS3810TZG laptops.

Those are all 13.3″ models. They are being recalled due to bad internal wiring of the microphone. Apparently three incidents of short circuiting have been reported so far, which causes the laptop’s plastic cases to melt. Hopefully not while on your lap.

The cases are now available to be purchased in Office Depot and ULTA stores around the country. The faceplates are available for the iPhone and Blackberry devices.

Bamboo wood is finding its way into more and more products in all sorts of industries. This is due to the fact that it looks good, is strong, and grows very fast. Bamboo has been used to cover notebooks before with good effect and Foxconn has announced a couple PC cases with bamboo covering.

One of the cases is the Bamboo One mid-tower case. The front bezel of the case is made from bamboo, as is the side vent cover. The wood looks really good but they should have cut the drive bay covers from the same piece so the grain and color matched.

MyTouch 3G clone runs Windows Mobile 6.5

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on December 10th, 2009

MyTouch 3G clone runs Windows Mobile 6.5We’ve seen plenty of knock-off cell phones, whether they be iPhone ripoffs to Nokia clones Blackberry doppelgangers. Let’s face it, they are fun to spot and in many cases easy to laugh at. Take this T-mobile MyTough 3G (HTC Magic) “inspired” phone, for instance.

The design looks like the MyTouch 3G, but this thing is running Windows Mobile 6.5. Some other features include Wifi, GPS, and bluetooth. And as an added insult, it even comes with a pair of headphones that are clearly Apple earbud rip-offs. If for some reason you are interested in rocking this, it’s a steep $288.

Sure that’s a lot of dough, but this thing looks like a futuristic city all by itself. More importantly it looks different than everything your friends have. It’s nice to be unique. Expensive, but nice.

Sprint turned over users data to authorities 8 million times last year

Posted in Sprint by Conner Flynn on December 2nd, 2009

Sprint turned over users data to authorities 8 million times last yearYes you read that correctly. Just in the last year alone, Sprint turned over users GPS data to authorities 8 million times. Now maybe that number turns out to be grossly inflated. Maybe it’s really 4 million times, or 1 million. Even if it’s under a thousand users, this news is scary.

There are legitimate reasons for law enforcement agencies to have access to location data. We could all understand the need when it comes to missing person cases, kidnappings and wanted fugitives. We all want lives to be saved. But there must be some guidelines, because this is truly scary stuff below:

NZXT launches Tempest Evo PC case

Posted in Computer Cases by Shane McGlaun on November 18th, 2009

nxzttempestevoFor many people the case they choose when building their computer is based more on price than anything else. Computer cases can cost hundreds of dollars for high-end parts made from aluminum with a fancy design. NZXT makes a line of cases that tend to be among the cheapest and offer good looks and performance.

The company has announced a new case called the Tempest Evo that is a mid-tower case designed to E-ATX standards allowing it to accept larger server motherboards. The machine has lots of fans with two in the top, two in front and one on the side and in the rear included.
