Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on August 18th, 2010

We’ve been hearing rumors of a Google Chrome OS tablet hitting Verizon for awhile now. The latest rumor has Google’s Chrome OS tablet is being built by HTC, and it will apparently be launched on Verizon on November 26th.

The device will be subsidized by the carrier, and much cheaper than the iPad. The rumor says that it has the following specs: An NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform, 1280 x 720 pixel multi-touch display, 2GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G connectivity, GPS, Webcam and Expandable storage.

T-Mobile G2 teaser site surfaces

Posted in T-Mobile by Conner Flynn on August 18th, 2010

T-Mobile’s G1 was the first Android smartphone on the market in the US, and the carrier had no plans of stopping there. Now there’s a G2 model coming. And so T-Mobile has released a new teaser site for the T-Mobile G2 with Google, making it the first HSPA+ capable smartphone on their network.

Details are scarce, but it looks like it will come in white. Hopefully we will have more info soon. Only a vague outline of the handset has been shown, though we have heard rumors about different T-Mobile devices in the past.

PayPal in talks with Google about Android payments

Posted in Paypal by Conner Flynn on August 14th, 2010

PayPal is in talks with Google to add PayPal as a payment method for the Android Market. Apparently Google wants to make paying for apps as easy as possible for Android users so they can start shifting apps. As it stands, you can buy apps through Google Checkout and sometimes using carrier billing.

Both options are fine, but not popular. Using PayPal as a payment option would likely open the flood gates and move a ton of apps. On the other hand, PayPal currently powers Blackberry App World, illustrating the point that no matter how easy it is to buy apps, people still need good apps to buy.

Samsung Galaxy S heads to RadioShack on three carriers

Posted in Samsung by Shane McGlaun on August 13th, 2010

I usually venture into a RadioShack store once a year or so when I am in the mall around Christmas just to see all the sweet remote control toys they carry. The Shack has been working hard to get people to come in more and one of the ways that it has pulled that off is by turning itself into a seller of all wireless phones.

The Shack is offering the sweet new Galaxy S smartphone on three different carriers all in one place. You can get the Galaxy S as the Epic for Sprint, Vibrant for T-Mobile, or the Captivate for AT&T. The AT&T device sells for $199, while the other two are apparently going for $149.99.

Best Buy confirms Droid 2 at $199 with 2-year activation, $599 without

Posted in Best Buy by Conner Flynn on August 8th, 2010

There have been a ton of leaks up to this point, so it’s hard to believe that Verizon or Motorola have not yet acknowledged it’s existence. However Greg from North Carolina says that his local Best Buy has some of those leaked dummy units on shelves, along with some price tags.

Looks like the phone will launch at $199 with carrier subsidy and $599 without a plan. There’s still no solid confirmation of that August 12 release date, but we all know the score anyway.

US in top 6 for data plan costs on iPad

Posted in iPad by Shane McGlaun on August 3rd, 2010

I think that we all know AT&T and the other major carriers in the US charge us way more money than they really need to. They can cry about how much data smartphone users consume all day, but the fact is we pay much more for the data we use than other countries.

Wired put together a nice little chart comparing the price of downloading a gigabyte of data around the world. The US came in at number six on the list with a price of $12.50 per gigabyte. The most expensive place was France with a cost of $25.47 per gigabyte.

LG’s latest smartphone to hit South Korea is the Optimus Z. It will be available from local carriers SK Telecom and KT. The device runs Android 2.1 with the option to upgrade it to 2.2 before 2011. Performance should not be a problem thanks to its 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Each purchase also gets you a couple of 1,350mAh batteries so you can keep your phone juiced while traveling. The body measures just 11.05mm thin. The Optimus Z is definitely sexy in matte-finish metal as well.

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on July 27th, 2010

If you are looking forward to the Samsung Epic 4G you’ll be happy to hear that the phone’s full spec sheet has been leaked. We knew about the basics, like the 4 inch Super AMOLED display, five row QWERTY keyboard, 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor, LED flash and 720p HD video recording already.

The leaked specs help fill in some of the gaps, revealing 1GB of ROM, 512 MB of RAM, 1500 mAh battery, six-axis motion sensor, and a few other details. The Epic 4G will be running on Android 2.1 with Touch Wiz 3.0 and will feature the typical Google services and applications.

Motorola Droid X And HTC Incredible pushed back to August

Posted in Motorola by Conner Flynn on July 21st, 2010

The Droid Incredible and the Droid X have been been quite the hit, so much so that the carrier has been having trouble keeping up with demand for the devices. I guess if you have to have problems, this is a good one to have.

According to Verizon’s website, if you want to get hold of the HTC Droid Incredible and the Motorola Droid X, you will have to wait until August 3rd. The Droid Incredible has a track record of being delayed, but the delay to the Droid X will be bad news to the many who are waiting.

Apple engineer warned Jobs about iPhone antenna early on

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on July 15th, 2010

Now we have more drama in the Apple antenna saga. Bloomberg says that someone “familiar with the matter” claims Apple’s own antenna expert, Ruben Caballero, told Apple management that the iPhone 4 antenna design could cause problems and dropped calls.

Caballero is a senior engineer for Apple who holds many antenna patents under his belt. We don’t know the whole story but it is the latest twist to this sorted tale and suggests that Steve Jobs had been alerted to this problem during the design phase.

DigiTimes claims to have spoken with “sources from notebook players” who say that the tablets will be powered by ARM chipsets and will have a stronger focus on multimedia and entertainment. Acer is also apparently working with some carriers to support the tablets.

Consumer Reports retracts iPhone 4 recommendation

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on July 12th, 2010

This is not good news for Apple. After initially saying that the iPhone 4′s reception issues were no big deal, Consumer Reports has changed its stance, recognizing that the software fix won’t help matters, and retracting their recommendation. Apparently, they finally got around to testing the device.

And they’ve just discovered the phone’s reception problems, which we have known about since the beginning.

Face Time calls will use no voice calling minutes according to Apple

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on June 21st, 2010

One of the cool new features of the iPhone 4 that Apple talked about at WWDC was Face Time. Face Time is a video calling application that only works between iPhone 4 users via WiFi.

Some were wondering if AT&T would be charging users for voice minutes when using Face Time. Apple now says that Face Time calls will not use voice minutes. If a Face Time call is started within a voice call, the voice call ends when Face Time connects.

Verizon Droid X outted on its own site

Posted in Verizon by Conner Flynn on June 17th, 2010

Verizon’s upcoming Droid X has surfaced on the carrier’s Droid page. The handset was expected to make an official debut next week and begin shipping on July 19. The page confirms a 4.3-inch screen and a 720p resolution, though that’s probably a reference to video capture and not the actual display.

The official unveiling event on June 23 might also bring news of the Droid 2 slider. The Droid X, also called Droid Touch on the Verizon site, will also feature a 1GHz OMAP processor, an eight-megapixel camera with HD video recording and an HDMI output.
