Anatomy model sleeping bag

Posted in Outdoors by Conner Flynn on February 14th, 2011

We’ve seen plenty of neat sleeping bags here at the Brick, but this is one I wouldn’t take camping. This thing is sure to attract animals, who think they can see your insides and pick your bones clean. Use it at your own risk.

The anatomy model sleeping bag is now available for sale. Maybe young doctors in love can get a pair and geek out, naming all the organs to each other at night. We say it’s just gross.

Eton Scorpion keeps your gadgets going on solar power and elbow grease

Posted in Green Gadget by Shane McGlaun on May 13th, 2010

I am more of an indoors type. I’m not really into camping and while I do go outside with the kids a lot, we don’t stray too far from an outlet. However, a while back when a hurricane came through the power was out for hours and I would have paid dearly for a gadget like the Eton Scorpion.

The device is a power generator for USB charging gadgets that has both a solar panel and a hand crank to generate charging power. The gadget also has a number of other features inside.

Quick Review: C.Crane Universal Solar Battery Charger

Posted in Review by Conner Flynn on March 25th, 2010

We were asked to check out C.Crane’s Solar Battery Charger, so CableOrganizer.com sent us a review unit and all we needed to do was wait for some sun. Luckily for us, the sun is returning around these parts. So we rounded up a bunch of dead batteries and got to work.

This solar battery charger will charge AAA, AA, C and D size batteries and has a solar power meter on top which shows the charging rate. Just open the plastic cover and put some batteries in. At any one time, you can charge several batteries, a few AA or AAAs along with some Ds for instance.

Wilcraft amphibious ice-fishing vehicleThis is the Wilcraft amphibious mobile ice-fishing cabin. It’s for serious ice fishermen. It will carry up to 600 pounds of fish, with a top speed of 20mph. The best feature is that if you are on thin ice, you won’t sink in and freeze to death as the Wilcraft will float. That not only saves you, but all of the fish you’ve caught.

The Wilcraft can also be used as a hunting or even an ice rescue vehicle. It gets about 20 miles per gallon and should you decide you need an outdoor fortress, it will cost you $10,495. This might just be the new all purpose camping/fishing/hunting type vehicle.

Activetrax AM/FM radio, MP3 speaker

Posted in MP3 by Conner Flynn on May 6th, 2009

Activetrax AM/FM radio, MP3 speakerWe’re always on the lookout for MP3 speakers, so we had a chance to check out this one from Seattle Sports Co. “Activetrax On the go audio”. It’s designed for camping situations and features AM/FM, weatherband and also serves as an MP3 speaker. It comes with it’s own protective case and can operate by either solar or crank power. So it would seem to be ideal for camping.

As an MP3 speaker, it does the job, but don’t expect high quality sound. It gets pretty loud, but as with most of these type of speakers, the louder you crank it, the more sound problems you have.

Power your notebook with some foot power

Posted in Notebooks by Conner Flynn on January 27th, 2009

The idea behind this human powered laptop recharger is that you could get juice in the outdoors or in areas where you have no AC plugs. It’s called the YoGen MaxT and it can produce 50-60 watts, which is enough to power a notebook.

Those who are on the wimpy side are covered as the device has internal AA batteries that keep the power flowing while you rest your leg. It’s great for say, camping and hiking, when you take your notebook with you. The whole thing folds up for portability, making it convenient.

Fridge uses zero electricity, cools with fire

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on December 9th, 2008

Fridge uses zero electricity, cools with fireA research team at Stanford has developed a refrigeration device the size of a thermos. What’s interesting is that it uses no electricity. Zip. Zero. Nada. Zilch. Instead, it contains some kind of coolant that becomes cold when it’s exposed to heat.

Details are scarce, but the units would be fairly cheap to produce at about $50. The price makes it an ideal way to deliver medicines and cold water to developing countries as well as having a bunch of other uses a bit more noble then your next camping trip. It’s a great breakthrough. All a user would need to cool any given thing is fire, which is readily available.

Posted in Mobile Accessories by Shane McGlaun on September 10th, 2008

Cy-Fi Bluetooth SpeakerBluetooth speakers have been around a while for use with notebooks, mobile phones, and MP3 players. Most of the Bluetooth speakers available aren’t really intended for outdoor use due to the fragile technology and lack of batteries.

CY-FI has released what it calls the world’s first Bluetooth sports speaker that is designed to be easily portable and used while biking, boating, camping and for other outdoor activities. The device supports Bluetooth-A2DP enabled cell phones, PDAs, and MP3 players.

Crazy iPhone 3G line forms in NYC

Crazy iPhone 3G line forms in NYC
The supply is expected to be plentiful, nevertheless a line has already begun outside of Apple’s Fifth Avenue retail store to buy iPhone 3G a week before its release. These people are serious and have their supplies for camping. Wouldn’t it be nicer to stay at home with your families?

Part of the line is occupied by some activists known as “Waiting for Apples” who are hoping to set a Guinness World Record and spread the word about sustainable agriculture. They brought their own solar-power generator, yoga mats, a compost bin full of worms, and probably other hippie essentials. Personally, I can’t think of a better way to spend a week then sitting on my ass next to these guys. Yeah, that would just be awesome…

The Zippo OUL, not your typical Zippo lighter
Here’s a gadget from Zippo that sure would come in handy this holiday weekend. It’s bound to be perfect for camping or just lighting the grill, especially in the dark. The Zippo OUL (Outdoor Utility Lighter) will cost you $22 and features a wind-resistant dual flame and built-in LED light. The 8-inch-tall not-so-typical Zippo lighter also has an adjustable flame dial, water-resistant cap, metal construction, and comes with clip and strap. After you light the grill and enjoy the day, then use it to light candles at night. Hopefully the kind that ward off insects.

Intelligent lantern is a smart camping accessory

Intelligent lantern

You don’t generally see improvements in camping lanterns. For the most part they’ve remained the same for years, but this one has a pretty clever design that’s sure to make camping more enjoyable. How about a light powerful enough to be seen from a mile away? The lights are mounted on trays so you can swivel them where you need to see.

There’s also a jack and speakers so you can plug in your mp3 player and have some fireside tunes. If that’s not enough to get you in the great outdoors, there’s also a digital clock and an AM/FM radio with local weatherbands. Having these features all in one unit will lighten your load a bit. Uses 6 C batteries. AC and DC adaptors included.

Selk’bag sleeping bag body suit

Posted in Apparel,Outdoors by Reuben Drake on October 14th, 2007

The Lippi Selk-bag is a sleeping bag with arms and legs to let you move around and stay warmLooking like a great big over-stuffed snowmobile suit, the Lippi Selk’bag is a “sleep wear system” solution to the restrictions of conventional sleeping bags. Named from the Chilean nomads, the Selk’nam, who had a great resilience for the cold the Selk’bag has a hood, arms and legs giving you the ability to move around freely while staying warm inside your bag. On those cold mornings of camping simply standing up without getting out of your bag is hard enough not to mention trying to shuffle or hop around.

The Selk’bag is made with a Nylon shell and a Polyester hollow fiber bonded filling giving it an “extreme temp” rating of -8.4 degrees celcius. It also appears to have zippers to close up at the end of the arms and vent your legs and sides if you get too hot. But, unlike our full-body underwear we’re not seeing an opening to let us pee without taking it all off, which is the primary reason we’re usually getting up when it’s still cold outside in the first place.
