Samsung i727 spotted

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on July 8th, 2011

Some photos of the AT&T-bound Samsung SGH-i727 have surfaced. This is 80% of it. The rest of the phone had to be reconstructed with Photoshop. That’s why the perspective is off.

This phone has its Wi-Fi certification, but isn’t yet in the Bluetooth or FCC databases, so the i727 is probably still a few months from launching. It’s expected to be a mid-range handset when released. When we hear more we will let you know.

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on February 8th, 2011

Huawei is showing off two of the mobile devices it will bring to the Mobile World Congress show in Spain next week. The Ideos X3 smartphone and a new Ideos S7 Slim tablet. Both use the Android operating system. It looks like the hardware button from the face is gone, replaced with touch buttons. Otherwise, the seven-inch tablet looks nearly the same as the current one. The preloaded OS should be Android 2.2 or maybe even 3.0 rather than 2.1.

We don’t yet have any specs to go with the photos, but we do know that the Ideos X3 smartphone will also sport front and rear cameras and be available in at least four colors: red, blue, silver and black.

Microsoft wants to eliminate blurry DSLR photos

Posted in Cameras by Conner Flynn on January 24th, 2011

Many of us have a problem shooting blurry pics. It can be hard to hold your camera still. If you have this same problem and have some DIY skills, you might be able to make your own custom solution to blurry photos.

This is thanks to a team at Microsoft Research who is working on deblurring images by detecting inertial movements of the camera itself. They took an Arduino board and bundled it with some sensors, including a Bluetooth modem, 3-axis accelerometer, gyroscope, and a trigger for the camera. The system works by detecting rotation, translation and planar depth and then it applies mathematical transformations to the image to remove the blur caused by these movements. Pretty good solution.

Want to send images from your Olympus camera to your computer without cables? Well, now you can. The Olympus PENpal Bluetooth dongle will slide onto the accessory shoe on top of the Olympus PEN E-PL2 camera and give you full control of it from the camera itself. Pretty neat.

The PENpal can resize your images before sending, to 1280 x 960, 1920 x 1440 or 640 x 480. It is compatible with Android and Windows smartphones, but not the iPad. Just $80 and of course it’s just for Olympus cameras.

Ricoh was showing off their G700SE at Photokina, and the updated version of the G700 is capable of using add-on modules like the GP-1 GPS dongle and BR-1 bar code scanning module. Pretty cool idea. It should give the camera a longer life as well as make it more versatile.

The camera has a dust- and water-resistant shell as well as Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth 2.1. It was designed for governments and enterprises, so it will cost you about EUR799 ($1,070) when it arrives in the first half of 2011.

US detonated massive hydrogen bomb over pacific in 1962

Posted in Science by Shane McGlaun on July 5th, 2010

All most of us know about nuclear explosions today comes from the 60′s and movies. Back during the cold war, kids in school had bomb drills, which were weird considering the radiation could make it under your desk.

A new photo and story has surfaced that occurred back in 1962. The US strapped a hydrogen bomb to a rocket and fired it 250 miles above the Pacific Ocean. The bomb used was 1000 times more powerful than the one that leveled Hiroshima.

Next Playboy Centerfold to be in 3D

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on May 11th, 2010

Now here’s a use of 3D that we wholeheartedly endorse. A 3D centerfold has been a long time in coming. When Hugh Hefner launched Playboy in the 50s, he hired a photographer to shoot two nude women in 3D. But the price of bundling the glasses with the magazine was too high. This week, Hef’s dream comes true.

It should also help low readership problems which the magazine has been suffering for awhile. The June edition of Playboy hits newsstands this week and will feature centerfold Hope Dworaczyk in blue and red (anaglyph) 3D.
