Android Market reaches 20,000 apps, with over 60 percent free

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on December 15th, 2009

Android Market reaches 20,000 apps, with over 60 percent freeSure, with 20,000 of anything it doesn’t mean they are all quality, but it’s a notable milestone. The Android Market has now topped 20,000 apps in just over a year. Just FYI, Apple’s App Store had over 50,000 apps one year in.

What’s interesting here is the percentage of free and paid apps in the Market. According to AndroLib, 62.2% of the apps available are completely free, while 37.8% are paid apps. Compare that to the App Store, which now has over 100,000 individual apps and by some counts, 77% are paid applications, though only 30% of total App Store downloads are for paid apps. What it means is anyone’s guess, but markets for apps are very healthy indeed.

Two-week shipping delays for 27-inch iMacs

Posted in iMac by Conner Flynn on December 13th, 2009

Two-week shipping delays for 27-inch iMacsApple has pushed back the shipping time for all 27-inch iMacs to two weeks. The company already delayed them by five to seven days earlier. This delay is believed to have something to do with a quality measure involving cracked screens on delivery and also systems that experience periodic flickering or lose their video signal completely.

This is not good news for Apple since it will delay many orders past Christmas. This means that it will disappoint buyers and could also affect Apple’s quarterly results, which were given a boost by new iMac revisions. So don’t expect your new 27-inch iMac under the tree this year.

MyTouch 3G clone runs Windows Mobile 6.5

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on December 10th, 2009

MyTouch 3G clone runs Windows Mobile 6.5We’ve seen plenty of knock-off cell phones, whether they be iPhone ripoffs to Nokia clones Blackberry doppelgangers. Let’s face it, they are fun to spot and in many cases easy to laugh at. Take this T-mobile MyTough 3G (HTC Magic) “inspired” phone, for instance.

The design looks like the MyTouch 3G, but this thing is running Windows Mobile 6.5. Some other features include Wifi, GPS, and bluetooth. And as an added insult, it even comes with a pair of headphones that are clearly Apple earbud rip-offs. If for some reason you are interested in rocking this, it’s a steep $288.

The iPhone Christmas Tree

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on December 10th, 2009

The iPhone Christmas TreeLet’s say you are really into your iPhone. Let’s say you you worship Steve Jobs. In that case it’s totally understandable to toss out all of the conventional Christmas gear in favor of Apple products. You’ve ditched the nativity in favor of a Macworld diaroma complete with baby Stevus. You hang Apple packaging by the chimney with glee, instead of stockings. You’ve even attached Reindeer antlers to dolls of the Jobs man, pulling a sleigh.

All that’s left is to decorate the tree. Take a cue from the folks over at iPhone Savior, who have decided to decorate their Christmas tree with iPhone decorations and Steve Jobs magazine covers. We suppose you are waiting on the Apple tablet to top the the whole thing off.

JBL Creature III speakers for computers debut

Posted in Computer Components by Shane McGlaun on December 3rd, 2009

jblcreature3-sgSome folks like quirky things. These folks eschew the average and normal in favor of something that is different and cool. Personally, I just like things that are cool and the JBL Creature II speakers I used to own were certainly cool. JBL announced its new Creature III speakers today.

The new speakers share a close resemblance to the previous version and look like ghosts from Pac Man. JBL calls them Sci-Fi inspired. The speakers are a 2.1 system with a pair of satellites and a woofer. The sats are 3″ x 3″ x 2-3/4″ with a 40mm driver. The subwoofer is a 3-inch unit measuring 9″ x 9″ x 9″.

BlueAnt updates Q1 with A2DP support

Posted in BlueAnt by Shane McGlaun on December 2nd, 2009

blueantq1-sbI like it when manufactures add new features to the gadgets I own via firmware updates and don’t charge me any more money to get the features. This is what Apple does for the iPhone, Sony for the PS3, and now BlueAnt is doing the same thing for its Q1 Bluetooth headset.

The Q1 headset already has a lot of features, but the device lacked A2DP support for streaming audio from a smartphone to the headset. Streaming music might not be that great considering the headset is not stereo, but I am all for streaming directions from my iPhone navigation app.

Posted in YouTube by Conner Flynn on December 1st, 2009

Get ready for 1080p video on YouTubeWord is that Google is looking to get into the pay-per-episode TV business with YouTube and offer streaming content for purchase using a service that would compete with iTunes downloads. According to Peter Kafka of MediaMemo, several sources have indicated that YouTube wants to offer streaming TV episodes for a fee.

It would be similar to what Apple already offers: a $1.99 cost per episode. Apparently both sides are in early negotiations and they are “optimistic” that a deal can be reached.

Motorola DROID official on Verizon: $199 November 6thLook we all know that Motorola has a hit on their hands with DROID. So it should be no surprise that sales are brisk. Sales have been great since it’s first weekend. People are questioning their brand loyalty. Cats and dogs are getting along. It’s end-times.

The actual sales figures are reportedly around 700,000 to 800,000 devices, and with the holiday season upon us, the phone might hit the 1 million mark before 2010 arrives.

Fry 2.2 lbs of fries with just a spoonful of oil

Posted in Kitchen by Conner Flynn on December 1st, 2009

Fry 2.2 lbs of fries with just a spoonful of oilWho doesn’t love fried food? It’s as American as Apple pie and fried Snickers bars. Sadly it is not good for you and your arteries. However this T-fal ActiFry wants to change that. How? Well, it uses just a spoonful of oil to fry up 2.2 pounds of fries. That’s pretty impressive.

It uses convection cooking as well as a rotating paddle so that the fries get crispy on all sides, even though they aren’t covered in oil. Who knows how they taste, but at least it’s healthier. $300.

Amazon Kindle breaks sales records in November

Posted in Amazon by Shane McGlaun on November 30th, 2009

kindledx-sbI don’t get why companies are so hesitant to tell how much of a certain product they are selling. Apple tells us how many iPhones it sells if for no other reason than to make other smartphone makers feel inferior.

Amazon has by most accounts the most successful eReader available, but the company will not tell us how many of the devices it sells. Amazon did come out today and announced that the Kindle has broken its single month sales record in November.

Is Apple field testing the next generation iPhone?

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on November 29th, 2009

iphone3g-sbIs Apple field testing the next generation iPhone? Could be. iPhone developer Pandav noticed some usage records of an unreleased iPhone in the iBART app’s analytics. The iPhone that’s listed in the usage logs is iPhone 3.1, which I don’t have to tell you, does not match any current iPhone.

The iPhone 3GS is listed as iPhone 2,1. While it wouldn’t be surprising to see that Apple is busy working on a new iPhone, (There are rumors that Verizon will be getting an iPhone somewhere in2010) is this the one?
