MacBook modder puts a second screen in the Apple logo

Posted in MacBook by Conner Flynn on March 15th, 2009

This is a pretty cool and original MacBook mod. Macmods member EdsJunk has put a full-function color LCD inside the Apple logo and hooked it up as a secondary display. There aren’t many details, so we don’t know exactly how he did it, what kind of screen was used or what it cost him.

We do know that it is awesome. He has put it up on ebay where it is currently at $2,025.00 with 8 days to go. So you still have some time to get some money together. Where the final price will be is anybody’s guess.

iPod touch sets kid’s pants on fire

iPod touch sets kid's pants on fireI thought it was lies that set your pants on fire. In this case, it’s the iPod Touch. That’s why an Ohio mom is filing a lawsuit against Apple on behalf of her son, the kid whose “iTouch” seemingly exploded in his pocket and proceeded to torch his pants. Ouch.

The kid was treated for second degree burns on his leg, had a hole burnt through his pants and his underwear even melted. And according to the lawsuit, “He continues to suffer from both physical and mental conditions which will cause him to suffer pain, mental distress, emotional distress, and otherwise for the rest of his life.”

Apple Magic Wand controller patent

Apple Magic Wand controller patentApple may be looking into a wireless remote wand to power the next generation of Apple TV media systems, offering the cursor on the Apple TV display the kind of accuracy a mouse gives the cursor on a PC. Just like millions of Nintendo Wii owners around the world.

Unlike the current 5-button remote for the current version of Apple TV, the wand would be capable of controlling a bunch of new operations and applications that may be available from the media system, including zoom operations, a keyboard application, an image application, an illustration application, and a media application.

Budfits provide a cheap earbud alternative for the iPod Shuffle 3G

Posted in iPod by Conner Flynn on March 13th, 2009

Budfits provide a cheap earbud alternative for the iPod Shuffle 3GSo you like the new iPod Shuffle 3Gs voiceover function, but you hate earbuds. It would be nice if you could use any pair of headphones you wanted, but sadly the device is controlled by proprietary headphones, because Apple is greedy. Sadly third party headphones will cost you as much as the Shuffle itself.

What to do? Well, don’t be a sucker. You can get one over on Jobs and his cronies for only $8.99. BudFits convert your earbuds into headphones that won’t keep slipping out of your ears. They just snap in and you enjoy your music without having to buy Steve another yacht.

Posted in iPod by Conner Flynn on March 12th, 2009

New iPod shuffle requires adapter for third-party headphonesThe iPod Shuffle 3G isn’t a week old yet and Klipsch wants a piece of the action. They’re working on a set of earphones designed for the third-gen iPod shuffle. The revision will give users the same controls as Apple’s stock and In-Ear headphones, including triggering VoiceOver and switching playlists.

The feature set is still unknown but we’re talking a $100 price point. So the audio quality should be good. We hope. That shuffle sure is expensive if you don’t like the stock headphones.

startrek-sbIt’s very nearly the ides of March meaning that the summer is only a few months away bringing with it the summer movie season. Certainly one of the most anticipated movies of the season is the new J.J. Abrams directed Star Trek film.

The trailers I have seen for the flick appear to do the series justice, all without the over acting William Shatner made famous. Paramount Pictures announced recently that the latest trailer for the film that debuted March 6 exclusively on Apple.com has broken download records for the site.

Is the Apple Netbook actually an Ebook?

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on March 11th, 2009

Rumored Apple Netbook rumored to have a 10" screenRumors continue to swirl around whatever(if anything) Apple is building. Reports are that Apple has ordered 10-inch touchscreens from Taiwan. That part is looking more like fact. So the question is, will those screens end up in a netbook?

Andy Ihnatko of the Chicago Sun-Times has a slightly different and interesting theory about the device. He thinks it might be an ebook. Which makes more sense as the only real competitor they would have is Amazon.

New iPod shuffle requires adapter for third-party headphonesThe new voice-enabled iPod shuffle. It’s like Stephen Hawking is there to guide you through your songs in between constantly touching your earbuds wire. I’ll be honest, I think it’s a lame move. A gimmick. One designed to get more money out of the consumer and give you nothing extra.

It has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, but it’s controlled by proprietary headphones. Non-Apple headphones will require a special adapter that includes the required three-button controller. According to Apple they are working with third parties to put other compatible ear phones on shelves.

Redesigned iPod shuffle hits 4GB, talksApple just doubled the capacity of the iPod shuffle to 4GB, but that’s not all. They’ve completely ditched the control wheel. The clip stays, but they’ve added VoiceOver, a new feature that tells you which song is playing and who performs it at the touch of a button on the earbud cable.

Great, now I’ve got Stephen Hawking palling around with me. It will also call out your playlists and let you navigate to others. The device is available in black or silver for $80. VoiceOver is available in English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish. Check out the video tutorial below.

Behold the JesusPhone!

Posted in Humor by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2009

Behold the JesusPhoneWay back in the day, when Andy Warhol claimed to have a direct line to god, no one was buying it. Probably because his crappy phone was just a generic phone. Had he had this phone, people would have been convinced. Looks like constantly referring to the iPhone as the JesusPhone actually turned it into one.

This piece was shown at the PULSE contemporary art fair in NYC this weekend. Details are scarce, like whether or not anyone actually talked to the almighty. According to a tipster, it was exhibited near works by Eckhart Hahn, but they are unsure if it was actually by him.
