Movie studios to bring pre-DVD streaming to PS3, Xbox, more

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on September 27th, 2010

Here’s more great news for PS3 and Xbox 360 owners. Disney, Sony and Warner are close to testing a system that would give Internet access to movies before they’ve reached Blu-ray or DVD. Disney would be the most aggressive and would allow viewers watch movies on any web-connected device and possibly the PS3 and Xbox 360 as well. Disney would likely be cautious at first, trying one movie under the plan in an early 2011 trial.

We aren’t sure if Apple would be involved, but Steve Jobs sits on Disney’s board of directors. In Demand, a partnership between Comcast, Cox and Time Warner, said through CEO Bob Benya that the collective is in talks for a similar option through cable TV and maybe online.

Ellen jokes about the iPhone…then apologizes

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on May 4th, 2010

Apparently Apple doesn’t like satire when it’s about their company and their devices. Seems like they think it’s A-Okay to bully Ellen into apologizing for spoofing an iPhone commercial.

Seriously Apple, I’m starting to think you go out of your way to create bad PR and a Gestapo-like image. Ellen isn’t exactly my cup of tea, but she shouldn’t have to apologize for a simple spoof. When Hitler gets wind of this one he won’t be happy. Bet you can’t get him to apologize.

iPad 2 already in development, with OLED screen?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on April 19th, 2010

Looks like Apple may have version 2.0 of the iPad in the works already, with sources claiming that development has already begun. And if you believe the rumors, the screen is about to get an OLED makeover.

OLED displays are more vibrant than the LCD panels currently in the iPad, but so far are too expensive to use cost-effectively in anything larger than a mobile phone. However, analysts are predicting that OLED prices will drop eventually, but not until at least 2011. If the iPad 2.0 was to have an OLED screen and be released with Apple’s traditional update schedule, it’s unlikely the prices would drop in time.

Flip Ultra and iPod nano video quality compared

Posted in iPod Nano by Conner Flynn on September 13th, 2009

Looks like NewTeeVee took the Flip Ultra and did a side-by-side video quality comparison against that new iPod nano that’s all the rage. You might remember that during Apple’s presentation, Jobs took some shots at the Flip line of cameras. So how did the Nano compare to the Flip Ultra?

“Overall — the Flip offered a MUCH better picture both indoor and out, providing way more detail in the image. The Flip microphone was also a little more discerning in our test, able to distinguish our subject’s voice in a crowded room much better than the Nano.”

Zune HD: The first device to use NVIDIA Tegra

Posted in Zune HD by Conner Flynn on June 17th, 2009

Microsoft Zune HDIt’s official. Zune HD will be powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra processor, making it the first PMP in the world that can claim that honor. NVIDIA confirmed it themselves. The all-in-one processor offers hardware acceleration of video and can consume just 150mW of power at full speed, giving it a battery life like a regular media player in spite of the demands of 720p video playback.

The new Zune is likely using an APX 2500 or 2600 processor, which combines an ARM11 processor with a GeForce-based graphics core and controllers for memory and output. It has just enough performance to display 720p at full resolution when using HDMI and also supports 3D rendering performance much faster than most handheld devices.

Sony’s 4th quarter profits down 95 percent

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on January 29th, 2009

Sony’s 4th quarter profits down 95 percentIt isn’t any secret that things are tough all over. Every company out there is hurting, but Sony’s 4th quarter numbers are really bad. We’re talking a 95% drop in profits.

They managed to pull in only 10.4 billion yen during the 4th quarter, having done 200.2 billion yen the previous year. The numbers tell you that the holiday season was a complete bust for Sony. TVs, PS3s and PSPs just weren’t on people’s lists. The fault lies with you and I, who did not buy/want Sony products.

Frog shows off LED light bulbs

Posted in LED by Conner Flynn on September 3rd, 2008

Frog shows off LED light bulbsFrog Design has been busy re-inventing the light bulb, while Edison mumbles and rolls over in his grave. Frog is the legendary firm that has designed some of the first Apple computers, Sony TVs, and a whole lot of other neat stuff that you probably love.

Now they’ve upgraded the LED bulb in a form that those consumers who hate change, may just embrace. They apparently have a 30-year lifespan, better color rendering and no harmful pollutants like compact fluorescents. It’s a great idea that would convert tons of consumers who prefer baby steps or simply prefer the old style bulb look.
