7-inch iPad coming with front and back cameras?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on September 20th, 2010

Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar claims that a seven-inch iPad is coming and that at least one future iPad will have dual cameras. The finished devices would arrive sometime in 2011, according to Kumar.

Competition is heating up in the tablet market, so two cameras would give it a possible edge: the Samsung Galaxy Tab has both front and back cameras that can be used not just for video chat but for apps that need a back camera and would still make sense on a tablet, such as augmented reality or barcode readers.

Posted in Best Buy by Conner Flynn on August 22nd, 2010

If you happen to be at a Best Buy today, you’ll find just one tablet for sale: Apple’s iPad. But when this holiday season comes around, that will all change. According to Shawn Score, president of Best Buy Mobile, the company will be focusing on tablets during this years holidays.

He says that “Like e-readers over the last couple years, we think customers will think of Best Buy for tablets and expect us to have the right ones.” He didn’t confirm any models or brands, but we pretty much know which tablets to look out for.

Posted in BlackBerry by Conner Flynn on August 19th, 2010

Word on the tablet street is that RIM will be using an operating system developed by QNX Software Systems for its upcoming tablet, the BlackPad. This is interesting news because it means that RIM won’t be using its own BlackBerry 6 OS.

Last month RIM acquired the Internet rights to blackpad.com, according to the Whois database. We can’t wait to see how it all plays out with this OS. It’s an interesting move by the company.

Motorola’s Android tablet a direct Google project?

Posted in Motorola by Conner Flynn on August 19th, 2010

Some reports from Digitimes would seem to indicate that Motorola’s upcoming 10-inch Android-powered tablet could be one of Google’s flagship devices. It’s been speculated that Google might consider the device a true representative of what Android 3.0 is capable of.

The device should be powerful if it’s using NVIDIA’s dual-core Tegra 250 chip, but will the display compete with the iPad? It will be using a display from Sharp that isn’t as bright as the one Apple uses from LG. Looks like Verizon is still seen as the main carrier.

iPad kicks Asus in the Eees

Posted in ASUS by Shane McGlaun on August 17th, 2010

If any of you out there though that the iPad would fail, you were so wrong. The iPad is selling faster than Apple can build them and the demand is showing no signs of letting up.

Apple is building all the iPads it can and if it were not for screen shortages, it would build more. The sales success is a good thing for Apple, but not a good thing for other companies like Asus. Asus has announced that its Eee sales forecasts are being reduced to 1.4 million units for Q3.

Axon Haptic Tablet designed for OS X

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on August 13th, 2010

Apple might not be offering an OS X tablet, but Axon Logic is now taking pre-orders for its Haptic tablet, which is apparently suitable for hackintosh Mac OS X installations. The company does officially warn against installing OS X, due to licensing restrictions, but the tablet is said to be specifically designed for compatibility with any Darwin-based operating system, like Apple’s Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X.

It’ll cost you $750, and you’ll need to purchase your own operating system like Windows or OS X, and the company also offers accessories like a CDMA 3G card, USB Bluetooth dongle, Bluetooth GPS receiver and some others.

Turn your phone into a tablet

Do you tote around both a phone and a tablet? Apple fans need not answer since we already know that you do. Why not merge the two? That’s the idea behind the Sony Ericsson FH concept.

The FH is a dual screen flip phone. The hinge allows you to position both halves of the phone side by side, so that the screens line up and work like one big screen. Wait, there’s more.

Apple sells three million iPads in 80 days

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on June 22nd, 2010

Apple has just announced that it has sold 3 million iPads worldwide since the US launch date. Impressive? Hell yes. The announcement also mentions that the tablet will be hitting nine more countries during July alone.

The release also boasts that there are now 11,000 apps for the iPad. That’s more than double the 5,000 that were available at the end of May. Not bad at all for a tablet that doesn’t have flash. The iPad is like the Borg, assimilating whole planets of buyers. At this rate everyone will have an iPad by Christmas.

Velcro makes the iPad even more versatile

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on May 23rd, 2010

This is the kind of forehead slappin duh innovation that we love to see around here. It’s so simple, we wish we had thought of it. When you attach velcro to your shiny new iPad, it turns Apple’s portable tablet into a wall-mountable hands-free display, but that’s not all.

With velcro there are probably hundreds of new ways to use the iPad. How about as a GPS unit mounted on your motorcycle’s gas tank? Risky for your iPad, but it works. Jesse Rosten demonstrates some interesting uses of velcro in the below video.

BlackBerry tablet to arrive in 2011?

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on May 3rd, 2010

Take this with the usual grain of salt, but word is that RIM is working on a tablet device, codenamed the BlackPad or Cobalt. Apparently the device will feature an 8.9-inch display and might even be thinner and smaller than Apple’s iPad.

If such a device is even coming out of RIM, it would be unveiled in 2011, with a 3G connection, Wi-Fi, and might even sync with a BlackBerry smartphone. Now this is mighty interesting. If they play their cards right, this could really compete with Apple.

That date relates to orders from here on out. Those in the UK and elsewhere might see the 3G and WiFi-only tablets coming out sometime around the end of May.

The iPad LapDock

Posted in iPad accessories by Conner Flynn on April 9th, 2010

Every tablet needs the perfect keyboard accessory that can also function as a hard case right? Well, some folks have built just that for the iPad. It’s called the LapDock, and it’s goal is to replace the laptop with the tablet. Yeah, let them dream.

The LapDock is basically just a carved wooden case for your iPad and Apple Bluetooth keyboard. If only there were more connectivity options, they just might be onto something here. Still, it is a cute case.
