Opera Software: ‘Flash makes little sense for video’

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on May 6th, 2010

Now Opera Software has entered the great Adobe Flash v. Apple debate, urging Adobe to embrace open web standards. Speaking with Tech Radar, Opera’s product analyst Phillip Grønvold very diplomatically said that “today’s internet content is dependent on Flash” and “if you remove Flash you do not have today’s internet,” and for that reason Opera needs to support Flash.

Then Grønvold stated that while Flash has its place for things like dynamic content, it “makes very little sense” for video container given the impact on processor and battery usage. He added that “you can cook an egg on [devices] once you start running Flash on them and there’s a reason for that.”

Apple patent app hints at heart rate logins for iPhone

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on May 6th, 2010

I bet that there are lots of you who have tried to use biometrics to log into your gadgets or computers before and had a hard time. I know the notebook I used to have with a fingerprint scanner rarely let me login when swiping my finger.

Apple has a new biometric sensor patent application that has surfaced that shows a method Apple has envisioned to allow only authorized users to access future iPhones. The sensors in the case of the phone would read the users heart rate and use the readings to verify their identity.

Ellen jokes about the iPhone…then apologizes

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on May 4th, 2010

Apparently Apple doesn’t like satire when it’s about their company and their devices. Seems like they think it’s A-Okay to bully Ellen into apologizing for spoofing an iPhone commercial.

Seriously Apple, I’m starting to think you go out of your way to create bad PR and a Gestapo-like image. Ellen isn’t exactly my cup of tea, but she shouldn’t have to apologize for a simple spoof. When Hitler gets wind of this one he won’t be happy. Bet you can’t get him to apologize.

Apple sells 1,000,000 iPads in first month

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on May 3rd, 2010

Well, Steve did say that it would be revolutionary, and if you are going by sales alone, the iPad is living up to it’s master’s hype. On Friday, “just 28 days after its introduction,” Apple sold its millionth iPad. Of course, that isn’t all.

1.5 million ebooks have been downloaded to the device, along with 12 million apps. This in less than half the time it took to achieve the milestone with the original iPhone. And demand for the iPad continues to outstrip supply.

TomTom app store may launch this year

Posted in TomTom by Shane McGlaun on April 29th, 2010

Before Apple tossed the iPhone onto the market and then offered the App Store, apps on smartphones and other devices were pretty rare. Today everyone is launching their own app store to try to make more money.

GPS and PND maker TomTom is reportedly set to launch its own app store. TomTom’s CEO won’t give a specific date, but the app store is expected this year. It’s not clear if a TomTom app store will be for TomTom GPS devices alone or for multiple devices and product types.

Next iPhone expected to trigger flash memory shortage

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on April 28th, 2010

Word is that the upcoming release of Apple’s iPhone 4G might cause a shortage of flash memory in the market. Apple is expected to ship about 40 million iPhones this year alone, which is just a bit more than 25 million from a year back. Does that mean there could be a shortage?

But that isn’t all to consider. Apple is expected to ship about 7-8 million iPads this year as well. See how it is starting to look likely? Apple is already said to be the largest consumer of flash memory in the world, since it uses built-in memory in the iPhone, iPad and iPods.

iPhone app chocolates

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on April 28th, 2010

Nothing says I love you like iPhone chocolate apps. These iChocolates are a 20-piece gourmet chocolates assortment which resemble iPhone and iPad app icons, boxed in a luxury iPhone-like package.

They look iDelicious. These are handmade in France and on Etsy now for $46.44 per box. Not a bad price for a geeky treat. Come on Apple nerds, if you REALLY loved Stevie Jobs, you’d send him this. And he would be yours forever.

Touchscreens can now track hovering fingers

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on April 25th, 2010

Cellphones with Cyprus touchscreens, like the Nokia S60 and Palm Pre, will have an extra dimension very soon. Hovering. No, they won’t hover by your ear. This is like when you’re working on your desktop computer, and an icon changes when you move your cursor over it. Get it? Starting in the next few months, cellphones will be able to do just that, by detecting your finger near the screen, and letting you hover the cursor without touching the screen.

How’s that for awesome? …

Apple iTravel Patent

Posted in patents by Conner Flynn on April 22nd, 2010

Apple never sleeps. They are always filing interesting patents. Like this patent for iTravel. The idea is that it turns your iPhone into a device that can handle all your travel needs. It would allow you to search for and book flights right from your iPhone.

You can then share that information with your iPhone contacts if you like, or set it so that you receive travel updates via SMS or push messages. The app could use RFID, so that your boarding pass is stored on your iPhone and can be scanned using QR codes or an RFID chip.

Pioneer outs iPhone remote controllable Blu-ray players

Posted in Blu-ray by Conner Flynn on April 20th, 2010

Why do we need remotes for anything anymore, since many of us already have iPhones? Pioneer has just added two new Blu-ray players due in May that feature iControlAVR app support built in. Both the BDP-330 and the higher end BDP-LX53 sport the Precision Quartz Lock System with the addition of YouTube streaming and RSS feeds.

Taking advantage of the Apple tie-ins will require you to hook up to the network and a WiFi dongle is extra of course. But if you like to use your iPhone to it’s true potential, then check these out.

Screen shortage to blame for iPad delay?

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on April 20th, 2010

Apple announced recently that the iPad wouldn’t be shipping in Europe for about a month after it was expected. At the time, Apple gave no reason for the delay other than to say demand in the US was more than expected.

Bloomberg is now reporting that the reason for the delay may be a screen shortage. Apple gets iPad screens from LG Display Co, Samsung, and Seiko Epson. Reports claim that all three vendors are having production issues with the screens.

Did Gizmodo pay $10,000 for “lost” iPhone 4G

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on April 19th, 2010

The Internet is on fire today with Gizmodo’s hands on preview of what appears to be Apple’s next-gen iPhone. In case you missed the story, someone found an iPhone in a bar in Redwood City. The device appeared to be an iPhone 3GS, but when the cover was removed, it was clear that this was no ordinary iPhone. It appeared to be Apple’s next-gen iPhone. And it looks like that is exactly what it is.

The guy who found the iPhone sent pictures of it to Engadget. Later Gizmodo actually obtained the iPhone in question, which has given Gizmodo over 2.5 million page views on that story alone. Then came word that Gizmodo had paid 10 grand for the iPhone prototype. Did they? We don’t know. Were they and Engadget in a bidding war? We don’t know.

Oval iPhone from china

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on April 19th, 2010

This Oval iPhone from China is clearly designed for the ladies. It looks like it could be any number of womanly things. Maybe a makeup mirror or compact. It’s called the ‘Lady Apple’. I can almost hear you ladies swooning. The phone bears the Apple logo and the word ‘iPhone’, so you know you can trust it right?

Looks like it has pretty average specs, including built-in games, media playback, a digital camera and an FM radio. The round design actually looks kind of slick.

Apple’s 4th-generation iPhone

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on April 19th, 2010

This weekend there was much drama around the fourth-generation iPhone prototype that was leaked into the world. Was it real? Was it not? And sure enough, it was real. The guys at Gizmodo got their hands on it, and examined it, erasing any doubt.

Sadly, they couldn’t get it to boot out of recovery mode, but several new features and changes are obvious. It’s thinner than the 3GS, with smaller internal components and a larger battery inside the metal frame. There’s a front-facing camera, a larger and better camera with a flash on back, a higher-res display that’s a bit smaller, a second mic for noise cancellation, and a new back that appears to be glass or ceramic.
