Face Time calls will use no voice calling minutes according to Apple

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on June 21st, 2010

One of the cool new features of the iPhone 4 that Apple talked about at WWDC was Face Time. Face Time is a video calling application that only works between iPhone 4 users via WiFi.

Some were wondering if AT&T would be charging users for voice minutes when using Face Time. Apple now says that Face Time calls will not use voice minutes. If a Face Time call is started within a voice call, the voice call ends when Face Time connects.

iPhone 4 to Double iPad’s RAM With 512MB

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on June 17th, 2010

Apple never really wants to tell us how much RAM is in their devices, but MacRumors is now reporting that the iPhone 4 will have 512MB of RAM. That’s twice what the 3GS and the iPad have and is more on par with it’s competitors like the Evo 4G. That’s good news for everybody.

The iPhone 4 will also have the same processor as the iPad, so if this is true it will also have twice as much memory. Developers will be able to keep more data cached and manage graphics changes more effectively, and for you and me that means browsing without frustrating refresh times and smoother multitasking.

San Francisco passes cellphone radiation law

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on June 16th, 2010

We know what happens when a radioactive spider bites you. You become spiderman. But what happens when you get too much cell phone radiation? Nothing good, that’s for sure. And so the people of San Francisco will soon have a new cellphone radiation law to help.

The law requires retailers to post notices on how much radiation is emitted by the cellphones they sell. This is the first law of it’s kind in the United States. The cellphone industry claims that this law could hurt sales and make consumers believe that some phones are safer than others. No one can agree on just how harmful cell radiation is.

AT&T stops iPhone 4 Pre-Ordering after system collapse

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on June 16th, 2010

AT&T can’t deal with iPhone 4 orders. After shutting down their online sales system following several security problems, they are giving up in order to avoid any further trouble. Seems like their computer systems are in real trouble thanks to the demand surge.

This comes after only one day of pre-orders. The demand collapsed both AT&T and Apple servers, which were unable to take orders, were taking multiple incorrect orders, placed reservations that didn’t reserve anything, and had physical stores closing or having to take orders with pen and paper. The problems also involved a security breach, with people trying to get into AT&T only to get into the wrong customers account.

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on June 14th, 2010

If you’ve been drooling over the new iPhone, you’ll still have to wait until June 24th to actually get the Phone 4 in your hands, but you can place a pre order at Best Buy starting June 15th.

That’s good news if you don’t want to pick one up at Walmart or the Apple Store. So the only thing left to decide is whether you want it in black or white. How many of you will be hitting up Best Buy stores tomorrow?

Philips launches Fidelio series iPod/iPhone docks

Posted in iPod Accessories by Conner Flynn on June 10th, 2010

Philips has officially launched their new line of Fidelio iPhone/iPod Docks. The Fidelio launch is just one piece of Philips massive global marketing campaign that brings together three award winning people from producers to composers. The campaign is called “Obsessed with Sound” and the three people involved are Steven Lillywhite, Geoff Foster, and Benjamin Herman. The campaign has the trio taking consumers talking up their reasons why they live and love sound, and how they expect nothing then perfection.

Each one has an obvious Apple style. Each has a beautiful design and quality craftsmanship that will please Apple fans.

ZAGG announces iPhone 4 invisibleSHIELD

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Shane McGlaun on June 10th, 2010

I have talked before about the ZAGG invisibleSHIELD protective films. I have used these films on all of my iPhones since the device launched and it does a great job of protecting the screen and body of the phone without having to worry about scratches.

The only downside to the film is that the extra grip it gives the body of the iPhone makes it hard to use the device in a case that fits snugly. ZAGG has announced that it has the film available for the iPhone 4.

Major WebOS developer leaves Palm for Apple

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on June 9th, 2010

The iPhone is on a completely different level from the Palm Pre in terms of popularity and sales. Still, there are a few things that I don’t like about the iPhone that the Pre does better. The most obvious is the way webOS handles notifications that let you keep working while the iPhone makes you stop and tend to the notification.

The man who designed the notification system in webOS has left Palm and landed at Apple. We can only hope that his first job will be to revamp the notification system the iPhone uses into something that works better.

iPhone 4 is official

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on June 7th, 2010

Apple’s latest iPhone is official, complete with an A4 chip inside, just like the iPad. The A4 has a few interconnected chips, like the Cortex-A8 main processor unit with a PowerVR SGX 535, and two low-power 128MB DDR SDRAM chips. This means that they can process things faster while consuming less battery than before since they are connected.

The 3.5-inch screen sports a resolution of 960 × 640 pixels. It has four times as many pixels as the current iPhone 3GS’ display. The screen has 326 pixel per inch resolution. Apple is also claiming an 800-to-1 contrast ratio which is four times better than the 3GS.

Mayor Bloomberg replaces index cards with an iPad

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on June 3rd, 2010

No matter what you think of Apple, you have to agree that the iPad, just like the iPhone is changing the world. Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg used his iPad for a speech instead of using index cards. Earlier that day he even showed it off in Staten Island declaring that it may replace his daily briefing book, itineraries, and other notes.

Pretty high praise indeed. It might not have been the best venue to show off his new toy though, as he was there speaking about the city’s struggling economy and facing questions from taxpayers. He loves the device. The mayor says that he even uses it to relax with a virtual Koi pond.

Apple says no third party apps can capture device data

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on June 3rd, 2010

Apple and its CEO Steve Jobs are notorious for their tight levels of secrecy surround its new products. I was surprised when Jobs didn’t personally castrate the dude who lost that iPhone prototype in public. Steve is now pissed that third parties are grabbing data on what software and devices are being used.

The problem Steve has with this is that “some company called Flurry” was capturing device information on handsets and software that were in testing on the Apple campus. Good ol’ Steve, never one to mince words said “Some company called Flurry had data on devices that we were using on our campus — new devices. They were getting this info by getting developers to put software in their apps that sent info back to this company! So we went through the roof. It’s violating our privacy policies, and it’s p***ing us off! So we said we’re only going to allow analytics that don’t give our device info — only for the purpose of advertising.”

LG Flutter concept phone

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on June 3rd, 2010

Concept phones are cool, but not always practical. Check out the Flutter. It was an entrant for LG’s recent Design the Future contest. The design didn’t win, but it did snag the Prop Master’s Choice Award. When the phone is closed, the Flutter has a nice sleek design with only the keypad showing.

And when the phone is opened, it reveals a display that fans out, with a user interface that looks like the one on Apple’s iPhone. Pretty cool.

iPad sales reach 2M units

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on May 31st, 2010

Apple has seen fit to release an update on its iPad sales numbers and they now top 2 million units in as many months. The device is now selling worldwide, which obviously helps to bolster the numbers. The supply is still a bit limited. As of last week, there was a one week delay on the iPad 3G.

Steve Jobs assures everyone that their patience will soon be rewarded as they are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone. To date, 5000 iPad apps have hit the app store.

Bing to replace Google as default search engine on iPhone?

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on May 29th, 2010

Look out Google. Word on the street is that Microsoft Bing will be replacing Google as the default search engine on the iPhone. There’s no confirmation on this, but it does fit what we’ve been hearing about talks between Apple and Microsoft.

Then again some sources are saying that Apple and Microsoft are just talking about adding Bing as a search engine option on the iPhone instead of replacing Google. I’ll guess we will learn one way or the other soon enough.
