Smartphones Help Mobile Gaming Grow

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on January 30th, 2009

Apple iPhone 3GBefore I purchased my iPhone, I thought gaming on a mobile phone was dumb. Prior to the iPhone, I used a Motorola Razr and the graphics and control system were so bad, you can’t really consider the handset to be a mobile gaming device.

After getting my iPhone, I think about mobile gaming much differently. According to a recent report from comScore, the rapid growth of the smartphone market is giving the mobile gaming market a significant push.

Apple gets patent on multi-touch

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on January 27th, 2009

Apple LogoPatents are a huge source of income for many companies, whatever the companies plan to do with the patents. Sometimes patents end up being used exclusively by one company and other times the company will license the patents to other firms for a fee.

Apple has been granted a major patent recently that covers multi-touch and gesture controls on computers and computer-like devices. With the massive popularity of touch-capable devices, this patent could prove to be the most lucrative patent Apple owns.

Apple patent would auto-tune volume

Posted in patents by Conner Flynn on January 22nd, 2009

Apple patent would auto-tune volumeIt’s a common problem. You have your headphones on and you’re in a crowd, but the music is drowned out by the crowd. Well, check this out. This Apple patent takes a look at dynamic volume adjustment that is based on your surroundings, not your music.

Looks like a sound sensor would detect the ambient noise and adjust itself based on the situation. The system wouldn’t force you to keep it at it’s own preferences and would take into account the user’s own choices for volume when setting the sound level. Interestingly, the patent application was first filed shortly after the launch of the original iPhone. Obviously Apple isn’t using it to date, but they already use ambient sensors to detect light for the displays on the iPhone, iPod touch etc.

Unique iPhone Applehead case from GoGo

Unique iPhone Applehead case from GoGoHere’s something you don’t see everyday. A stick figure with an Apple head. It’s the latest 3G iPhone case from GoGo. The Applehead iPhone Case is made from polycarbonate and is available only in white.

In case it isn’t obvious enough, it’s a scratch proof iPhone case with stick man on the back. The hole where the Apple logo goes, is his head. Kind of a symbolic representation of the Apple fanboy. No word on pricing yet, but a case like this will make you stand out from the crowd for sure.

Apple keyboard concept

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on January 19th, 2009

Apple keyboard conceptThis Apple Keyboard concept makes a lot of sense. It features all the necessary keys required in a Mac OS X environment and has an induction charge and synchronize segment on the right side that will hold your iPhone or iPod. The keyboard also has six programmable OLED keys.

It may not exist in the real world, but that didn’t stop the designer from giving it a price of $79.99. Too bad, it is only a concept, price or no. Apple fans would love this design and seeing a spot for the iPhone next to a keyboard makes me wonder why Apple hasn’t done it yet. Seems like a natural fit.

Palm Pre may initially be a Best Buy Exclusive

Posted in Palm by Conner Flynn on January 15th, 2009

Palm Pre may initially be a Best Buy ExclusiveAccording to WebOS Arena, the Palm Pre will be exclusive to Best Buy Mobile and Sprint stores for it’s first 60 days, citing a “credible source”. That isn’t a stretch as Sprint has previously given Best Buy such privileges, like in the case of the Samsung Instinct.

There was also a short time where Best Buy was also the only place outside of an Apple Store where you could purchase an iPhone. So, whether they have a “credible” source or not, it’s a good bet. Not a stretch at all. Still, it isn’t confirmed, so take it with the usual grain of salt.

Here we go again: iPhone nano now rumored for June

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on January 13th, 2009

Here we go again: iPhone nano now rumored for JuneMacworld just ended and already we have more iPhone Nano rumors. The Chinese trade paper Economic Daily News is now reporting that Taiwan Semiconductor Company (TSMC) will be handling chip manufacturing for a low-cost device being referred to as…cue music…The iPhone nano. The paper has a pretty good reputation, but take it with an iPhone sized grain of salt.

The source is citing a June launch of the handset, just after an order for the components in March. Apple does like to intro iPhones in the Summer, so if history is any indication, the timing fits. China has no deal for the iPhone, so a lower-cost version may be perfect for Asian markets. The nano could have a bunch of ready users.

Pioneer VSX series works with your iPod

Posted in Pioneer Electronics by Conner Flynn on January 12th, 2009

Pioneer VSX series works with your iPodSome new Pioneer receivers were caught talking at CES 2009 about how they want to hook-up with iPods and how they require Apple’s standard USB data cable to do so. The VSX series receivers won’t kill you in the wallet too badly, and they have features that I’m sure you will want, including out-of-the-box compatibility with iPods.

Just hook up your iPod or iPhone to the USB jack in front of the receiver and you’re ready. All you need to do is kick back, listen and check out the album art. The receiver remote also offers full control of your iPod, but surprisingly,(This may hurt sales) there’s no support for playing video off your iPod except for the VSX-919 and VSX-1019AH, the two models on the high end of the budget-minded VSX line.

More iPhone Nano rumors

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on December 30th, 2008

More iPhone Nano rumorsWhether there is any shred of truth to the iPhone Nano or not, it sure is stirring up some big rumors for such a small device. Adding to these rumors, case-maker Vaja today quietly added the category to its website. We’re not sure what to think. At this point, it’s a lot like the X-Files. The truth is out there. Somewhere.

Apple could produce a cheaper phone, but why? They could just as easily add another on the high-end. Yet, there it is on the site of a reputable accessory manufacturer with a brand new phone listed. Something seems to be afoot, but what?

The iPhone ELITE

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on December 29th, 2008

The iPhone ELITEThis one isn’t rumored to surface at all and we don’t expect to see it at MacWorld 2009. It should arrive eventually though, just because it is well thought out and just makes sense. This concept was born because Mat Brady wants to get rid of his Nokia N95 but won’t buy an iPhone due to the lack of a physical keyboard, no good camera, and not enough storage.

Mat’s concept is called the iPhone Elite. It’s an iPhone with 60GB of storage, true 16:9 aspect ratio, slide-out keyboard, one megapixel front camera for iChat, and another high quality camera, with better lenses, optical zoom, and video capability.

32GB iPhone coming at Macworld?

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on December 28th, 2008

32GB iPhone coming at Macworld? You know how rumors are. They circulate like a virus and they are twice as hard to kill. This one has been around for a bit. Rumors have been flying regarding the 32GB iPhone. AT&T is playing it’s part, by adding some fuel to the fire, by offering 8GB refurbished iPhones for $99. Then there is Macblogz, who received an anonymous tip which points to the release of the 32 GB iPhone.

Theoretically, to sell a less-expensive iPhone, priced at about $99, Apple would need to introduce a new model with less storage. The current models would get bumped in specs, and a cheaper iPhone would be introduced and outfitted with less storage than it’s bigger brothers. The current 8GB iPhone would be left out in this line up, and will probably be discontinued.

Student increases iPhone battery life by 12x

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on December 25th, 2008

Student increases iPhone battery life by 12xA PhD student at Carleton University in Canada, Atif Shamin, has out-thought Apple by inventing a ‘transmitter system on-package’ that significantly extends the battery life of mobile devices. It all has to do with the connection between the circuit board and the antenna.

Instead of using wire, he designed a high frequency micro-transmitter and receiver that avoids the usual loss of power through a wire. That’s a significant breakthrough in energy efficiency in mobile devices. He created a module that replaces all of the wires connecting a phone’s electrical circuits and the antennae, making them all communicate wirelessly.
