Sony Ericsson’s “Reese” flip QWERTY smartphone?

Posted in Sony Ericsson by Conner Flynn on February 15th, 2009

Sony Ericsson’s “Reese” flip QWERTY smartphone? If the above picture is to be believed, Sony Ericsson will soon be releasing a new swivel QWERTY called the “Reese” that features one-click access to all of “your favorite networking sites.” There aren’t many other details beyond this.

Therefore, we aren’t quite sold just yet. The large portrait screen would allow you to view several messages of any one kind in HD. If it exists, it’s too early to pin down an OS, but it is possible it could be Windows Mobile or even Android. But honestly if this is real, it isn’t that exciting.

Posted in Archos by Conner Flynn on February 9th, 2009

Archos to release Android phone/tabletWe’ll probably hear more about it at MWC, but Texas Intruments issued a press release about Archos’s use of the OMAP3 processor in an upcoming “Internet Media Tablet” that runs on Android and doubles as a phone. There aren’t any pictures yet, but the spec sheet reads like an upgraded Archos 5.

Some features include a five-inch screen, up to a 500GB hard drive, a battery that will give you up to seven hours of video playback, and Flash support. The whole thing in a package just 10mm thick. They even mention HD video playback.

Upcoming Acer smartphone makes it’s blurry debutWell, now we know that Acer has a few more smartphones coming, but they managed to keep both the features and the names of their new phones shrouded in mystery, aside from the Acer DX900.

Meet the next Acer phone in the lineup, thanks to this typically blurry picture. Looks like it features a swiveling QWERTY keypad and a touchscreen display with an unknown resolution. Could be Windows Mobile, Android or another platform. We have no idea yet.

General Mobile’s new Android handset

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on January 28th, 2009

General Mobile’s new Android handsetGeneral Mobile is showing off their latest Android handset called the DSTL1. The company is known for it’s dual-SIM handsets, so it’s no surprise that the DSTL1 can take two different SIM cards. It also sports a 3-inch touch screen, 5 megapixel camera, 4GB of storage, WiFi, and a 624MHz Marvell processor.

The picture above is a render, but it’s what they envision the final product looking like. The phone should be released in the third quarter of this year. An Android handset like this one with the dual-SIM feature definitely has us drooling.

Ruslan Kogan working on another Android device

Ruslan Kogan working on another Android deviceWe weren’t sure what would happen to Ruslan Kogan’s dream of building his own Android phone after Google apparently told him the Agora’s design wasn’t up to it. We were a little bummed, to be honest. Well, there’s a new model in the pipeline, and according to Kogan, his company is in the process of redesigning and launching an improved Kogan Agora.

This new phone will overcome the app compatibility issues that kept the original model from launching. Who knows how long it will take, but judging by how quickly he was able to get the first one out, it may just be a few months.

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on January 25th, 2009

Windows Mobile 6.5 on the Compulab ExedaRemember the Compulab Exeda? It sports a great design and can support multiple operating systems like Android and Windows Mobile, which is a rare treat. We like it more everytime we see it. It’s making news again because it has been seen running Windows Mobile 6.5. You can spot the upcoming OS because of the hexagonal buttons that are easier to use compared to Windows Mobile 6.1.

According to the company, this is an alpha build of the OS, and word is that it takes full advantage of 6.5’s inertial scrolling as well as other touch improvements. So, you get a phone that can run on either OS, that also has an Ethernet port, and both left/right click buttons. What’s not to like?

“Shining” phone looks like the Agora

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on January 20th, 2009

“Shining” phone looks like the AgoraWe don’t know what to make of this, but here’s the deal. A “Shining” phone (No, no pictures of Jack Nicholson on it saying HERE’S JOHNNY.) that looks almost exactly like the original version of the Kogan Agora Android phone just showed up on Alibaba with a three-day delivery time and a 100-unit wholesale price of $240.

Of course, the Agora was just delayed indefinitely or aborted depending on your point of view, so this could be nothing. It could just be contracting design and development out to Chinese manufacturers. Those are renders on the site, not actual pictures. Asian copies or no, it’s still a damn cool phone.

Kogan Agora Android phone aborted

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on January 16th, 2009

Kogan Agora Android phone abortedBack in December we told you about the Kogan Agora, a very promising Google smartphone. Well, we have some bad news for those that were hoping to lay hands on the inexpensive Google phone.

The Kogan Agora Android release has been postponed indefinitely. The move presumably followed a meeting with Google, with Ruslan Kogan pulling out of the launch citing that it needed to be redesigned in order “to ensure its compatibility with all future Android applications.” Full refunds are being offered to anyone that has already bought the device.

Android phones get 2D Bar Code reader

Android phones get 2D Bar Code readerIt used to be that bar codes were just for use in grocery stores. That’s not the case anymore. Grocery cashiers have hogged all of that swiping bar code glory for long enough. Personal bar code readers, like ScanLife’s latest for Android phones, allows you to quickly visit Web sites, phone numbers or videos.

It’s a shortcut for typing on your keypad or browsing. You can even create your own bar code on ScanLife’s Web site for quick access to functions that you use on a daily basis. The software has been available as a free iPhone app since August, but now you can download it for Android phones as well.

Compulab unveils exeda Android / WinMo handheldSomehow everybody missed Compulab’s exeda at CES. It’s a crazy device designed for the enterprise market and is distinctly squarish. Some features include: a 3.5-inch sun-readable VGA touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard, and a capacitive touchpad that will acts like a mouse.

Like some other Asian Android handsets, the exeda can boot Windows Mobile 6.1 on its 520MHz Marvell CPU with 128MB of RAM, and the radio setup is flexible. Resellers have their choice of quadband GSM / GPRS, CDMA, and 3G UMTS. Oh, and the exeda has a 10/100Base-T Ethernet port as well as WiFi.

T-Mobile branded Samsung “Memoir” cameraphone surfaces

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on December 8th, 2008

T-Mobile branded Samsung “Memoir” cameraphone surfacesThe latest blurry photos to surface are these two hazy pics that supposedly show-off a T-Mobile Samsung destined for the US. The alleged big brother to the Samsung Behold reportedly features an 8 megapixel camera. Tmo News is also reporting that it’s going to run on Touchwiz, the same UI as the Behold, and that it’s being called the Memoir.

It’s not a smartphone as the Touchwiz interface doesn’t have the flash and whiz-bang of Android or OSX, so don’t expect wifi. But that’s just what people are guessing. 3G is expected, along with a full html browser. Nobody knows for sure.

Kogan Agora: The latest Google Android smartphone

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on December 4th, 2008

Kogan Agora: The latest Google Android smartphoneGoogle’s open-source Android cell phone operating system can be found on the T-Mobile G1, but soon the G1 will no longer be alone. The Agora from Australian cell phone maker Kogan will be the next to feature Android.

Sure, it looks like the lovechild of a Blackberry Bold, and a Samsung Blackjack, but that just means that phones are getting smart enough to mate and swap good genes. It will feature a 2.5-inch touchscreen, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G, and a nice Qwerty keyboard.
