Luckily, for Cellular South customers HTC didn’t give a major carrier an exclusive on the sweet HTC Hero Android phone. The device will hit the Cellular South network soon with preorders starting on October 5.

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on August 29th, 2009

1080p Android Set-top Boxes are comingMIPS Technologies along with Sigma Designs demonstrated an Android-based set-top box that is capable of 1080p video. It’s being hailed as “a major milestone toward the creation of a reference platform” that will allow Android-based devices to enter your living room.

They’ve made enhancements to Android libraries and the MIPS architecture so that the OS can run on a full-sized display at HD resolutions, rather than small handset displays. The specific Sigma SoC (system-on-chip) used for the prototype is unknown, but it may be the SMP8640-series chip already used in Blu-ray players and other video devices.

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on August 26th, 2009

Mystery device identified as Rockchip Android MIDTurns out that the mysterious Android MID we told you about last week is a Rockchip concept intended to demonstrate the Chinese chip makers new RK2808 720p-decoding chipset. PConline played with one of the prototypes and it holds up pretty well, even though it isn’t meant for the consumer market in it’s current form.

It supports the usual multiple windows of an Android smartphone and all the menus and features of the OS are there. Of course, we won’t be seeing it on store shelves any time soon, sadly. But in time, production devices using the RK2808 will start showing up.

Cloud Telecomputers' Android for landlinesThis isn’t the first Android desktop phone to surface, but Cloud Telecomputers’ 8-inch touchscreen Android Glass phone keeps the old landline intact and adds a bunch of communications functions. When you put Android in a desktop phone, you get plenty of useful apps, like visual voicemail, calendars, SMS, and email.

Think about the other useful apps that could also be on the way. Cloud Telecomputers is thinking about them and expects lots of third party Android apps to be built especially for the business phone platform. It supports landlines and various VoIP and SIP clients.

We don’t know what it is, but we want one

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on August 17th, 2009

We don't know what it is, but we want oneWe have almost zero info on this beauty, but it has us drooling like a rabid dog. It’s a little touchscreen device that’s running Android and looks like it’s about 4.5 inches by 4 inches, like a larger version of the iPhone. Looks like it has two buttons on the top of the device and SD storage.

It may be a prototype. We don’t know who makes it or if it will even be for sale. Hopefully we’ll learn more about this device soon. If it’s real and the price is good, this could be a pretty neat open-source tablet. It’s sexy no?

By being free and unshackled of any OS, it allows the buyer to choose what ever OS they want to install, whether it’s XP, Android or Linux.

The ND10 is pretty similar to the NC10 in specs and sports a 10.2 inch screen, an Intel Atom N270 processor and over seven hours of battery life. They are pretty much the same, with you saving $50 by installing your own OS.
