Posted in Mac by Conner Flynn on June 8th, 2011

Mac users can now use Mad Catz’s series of Cyborg R.A.T. gaming mice. That’s because the company finally released some Mac drivers for the complete range of mice today, which will allow you to take advantage of all the advanced features Windows users have already been using for awhile.

Just be aware that you’ll need the Snow Leopard update first, since the drivers won’t accept anything less. This is great news for Mac gamers.

Senate Democrat to propose Internet sales tax

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on April 12th, 2011

US buyers who are making purchases on the Internet may soon need to pay state tax if a democratic senator has anything to say about it. The legislation will be made public after April 18, which is this year’s tax deadline. Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois is heading up the “Main Street Fairness Act”, arguing that sites like Amazon have an unfair advantage over physical and local businesses, since buyers don’t always pay taxes.

If you buy online a lot, you already know that American buyers who make purchases at out-of-state vendors don’t always have to pay sales tax. We have no idea if this would pass or not, but one key expected supporter, Representative William Delahunt, a Democrat, said he will not run for reelection in 2010. And a Republican-controlled House will likely object to the bill. What do you think of this act?

Android Market in-app purchases coming next week

Posted in Android by Reuben Drake on March 25th, 2011

If you are an Android user, we have some good news. Google has announced that testing of Android’s in-app purchasing system has officially begun. A full roll out is planned for next week. Android devs can now add in-app products to their software that is currently available, set prices, and set up a test account to make sure that the entire process works smoothly for users next week.

Google had said that in-app purchases were coming last month, so devs have been waiting patiently. Are you going to take advantage of in-app purchases when it goes live? It should be a better way to upgrade apps.

Verizon iPhone 4 gets a teardown

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on February 7th, 2011

As usual, the folks at iFixit have torn apart a new gadget. This time it is the Verizon iPhone 4. Of course they found the expected differences, but they also found that the phone has a slightly lighter battery than its counterpart, that the mechanical vibrator has been redesigned and moved from the top right corner to the bottom right of the phone and that the phone has a Qualcomm baseband chip.

The chip is a Qualcomm MDM660 chip that supports HSPA+ data rates up to 14.4 Mbps, and is the same chip used in the Droid Pro. So the chip technically supports both GSM and CDMA, although Apple has decided not to take advantage of that capability for whatever their reasons are.

Xbox Live Silver to be called ‘Xbox Live Free Membership’

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on October 21st, 2010

It’s all in the name. Microsoft is renaming its free Xbox Live Silver service to “Xbox Live Free Membership,” according to a tweet from European community manager Graeme Boyd. Anything with free in the name does sound better to the ear. This comes alongside the refreshed Xbox.com and the Xbox Live Gold price hike, as part of an apparent pre-Kinect relaunch of the Xbox’s online presence.

The new name no longer emphasizes Silver’s status as subordinate to Gold, but instead highlights the advantage of that level of membership being free. In a followup tweet, Boyd clarified that the feature set for Silver won’t change.

HP officially drops plans for Android Phones and Tablets

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on October 4th, 2010

HP has already announced that the company won’t be launching any Windows Phone 7 devices that would use Microsoft’s mobile OS and now today the company says that they will also be killing plans for Android devices from the company’s lineup.

HP will turn it’s focus on its own webOS mobile operating system instead, taking advantage of its acquisition of Palm. The one exemption to this new mandate seems to be the HP Photosmart eStation printer, which features an integrated Android tablet.

PS3′s 3.5 update now live with 3D movies

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 21st, 2010

The Sony Playstation 3 3.50 update is now live. The new update adds 3D support for Blu-ray movies, not just the earlier game support. If you want to take advantage of the update, you’ll need a 3D-capable TV however, as well as active shutter 3D glasses and an HDMI 1.4 cable. That’s one expensive update if you want 3-D movies.

There’s also Facebook integration, allowing developers to incorporate more social networking into games. Another key feature in the upgrades is a Grief Reporting Function that allows users to report harassment through the Friends link in the XMB interface.

Internet Explorer 9 goes beta

Posted in Browsers by Conner Flynn on September 15th, 2010

Internet Explorer’s global browser market share has declined year after year, moving away from its 90% figure back in 2003. Microsoft hopes to gain some ground with its Internet Explorer 9 beta announcement. Maybe they can reclaim some numbers from Google Chrome and Firefox.

Faster than IE8, IE9 will also be more compliant with HTML5, CSS3 and SVG2 standards. Microsoft is pinning all of their hopes on IE9 being the only browser to take advantage of full hardware acceleration when you surf the Internet. However, Mozilla disputes that claim, saying that they are faster and first. Hopefully this isn’t a case of too little too late for the big M.

The best phone in the line will be the Motorola Cliq XT. Walmart will also sell pre-paid wireless options from Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel. It will be available starting next week.

Sony launches yaybuttons.com

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 12th, 2010

Sony’s latest marketing campaign is aimed directly at Microsoft’s motion-sensing peripheral. If you go over to www.yaybuttons.com you can interact with a two-dimensional PlayStation Move, and see some quotes from Kevin Butler, explaining Sony’s various advantages over Microsoft’s Kinect.

Sony fans will love it. Microsoft fans will hate it. The rest of us just wish they would stfu and concentrate on making good games. If you want to sell consoles and peripherals, it’s all in the games.

California testing iPads as algebra textbooks

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on September 9th, 2010

We’ve seen iPads being offered on planes and in hotels, and now they are hitting schools. A pilot project in four California school districts will replace 400 students’ eighth-grade algebra textbooks with Apple iPads in an attempt to prove the advantages of interactive digital technologies over traditional teaching methods. He should help to correct their spines as well, since an iPad in the backpack weighs a lot less than a book.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has teamed up with California Secretary of Education Bonnie Reiss for the pilot, which will take place at Long Beach Unified School District, Riverside Unified School District, Fresno Unified School District and San Francisco Unified School District.

PayPal looking to replace Credit Cards in stores

Posted in Paypal by Conner Flynn on August 17th, 2010

PayPal is already the king of digital money transactions on the Internet and now it is looking to broaden its market by taking on the credit card merchants in stores. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal Paypal president Scott Thompson called the initiative a “top priority” and said “The tide is coming in and we will take advantage of that,”

With its 220 million active users PayPal is now looking to remove cards and the middle man completely and create a payment gateway that powers the point-of-sale itself.
