BlackBerry overtakes iOS in US web share

Posted in BlackBerry by Conner Flynn on December 1st, 2010

The BlackBerry had a victory today after StatCounter showed the platform overtaking the iPhone in web use in the US. They’ve been steadily narrowing the gap over the past year, and now RIM just slightly overtook Apple in traffic, accounting for 34.3 percent of American traffic while iOS slipped to 33 percent. Despite signs of growth before, Android as a web platform has leveled off at just 23.8 percent.

Worldwide figures also show RIM climbing, at 19.25 percent, but it still trailed iOS’ 21.9 percent and was well behind Symbian’s 31.9 percent. If these trends continue, Android and BlackBerry devices could get twice the web share of iOS sometime next year.

Verizon pastes iPhone map screen on Droid X ad

Posted in Verizon by Conner Flynn on November 30th, 2010

It’s a little embarrassing to be Verizon today after they have inadvertently embarrassed Motorola themselves through a holiday promo. An ad to promote the Droid X’s voice-guided Google Maps is using a digitally inserted screen cap of the Maps app from the iPhone instead, which not only runs on a rival platform to Android but was written by Apple itself. Oops.

It might not be such a big deal, but this puts Apple on a device that Motorola has repeatedly used in successful anti-iPhone ads. Accidents do happen, but this one should have been caught.

Posted in Nintendo by Conner Flynn on November 29th, 2010

Nintendo saw a resurgence in sales during Thanksgiving week. Starting from November 21 and running through this past Sunday, the company shipped 900,000 DS, DSi and DSi XL systems as well as 600,000 Wii units.

It credited the spike to the usual Black Friday push as well as new colors for the devices. The company didn’t say whether or not either figure was a record for the week, but both are well above Nintendo’s average sales results through the rest of the year.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 gets Android 2.1

Posted in Sony Ericsson by Conner Flynn on November 27th, 2010

Sony Ericsson has started the first wave of Android 2.1 upgrades for the Xperia X8. Some of the mid-range smartphones will get the upgrades today and this should be followed by a “gradual” rollout to every carrier and country that supports the X8. We don’t have a solid timeframe since it depends on approvals from each carrier.

Some additional Xperia X10s are also getting the upgrade. The X8 updates are the same as for the X10 mini and mini pro, which didn’t get the full-size X10′s 720p video recording but did add support for media sharing with TVs, new versions of Sony Ericsson’s custom Mediaspace and Timespace layers, and the updated app and compatibility support inherent to Android 2.1.

Microsoft officially relaunches the Kin One and Kin Two

Posted in Microsoft by Conner Flynn on November 18th, 2010

After being called one of Microsoft’s greatest failures and having been pulled from sale after only six weeks during its original run, the Kin One and Kin Two are now back on sale with Verizon. This re-release gives them a name change to the Kin ONEm and Kin TWOm. Originally Microsoft only sold 8,810 units, but they hope to turn those sales numbers around with better pricing plans.

One of the reasons cited for the poor sales was that the phones lacked full smartphone functionality, but at the same time were forced to use smartphone plans of at least $70 per month. It just couldn’t compete with more fully featured phones.

A custom layer on top of Windows 7 gives users access to media, the web and an e-reading app.

Some specs include a 1.5GHz dual-core Atom, 2GB of RAM and a Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator that can drive 1080p video either directly or in Flash. A 250GB drive also comes standard. Users can also turn the Duo into a clock radio and media player with an optional JBL speaker dock that cradles the tablet.

Official Google Voice finally reaches the iPhone

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on November 16th, 2010

After a very long delay, Apple has posted Google Voice for the iPhone. It’s free in the App Store. The app lets users make outbound calls using a Google Voice number at its reduced rates and also supports free outbound messages. You can also check texts and voicemail with push notifications when they come in while the app is closed.

The app needs a Google Voice account of course. This comes after more than a year of controversy over its appropriateness for the store. Apple says that it never rejected the app but had let the title languish for months even after an FCC investigation. But it’s here now.

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on November 16th, 2010

LG has a hit on it’s hands with the Optimus One. One million units sold isn’t big news these days for smartphone sales, but when you reach that number quickly it should tell you something. LG’s Optimus One has sold a million in just 40 days after initial launch.

And it’s still rolling out globally, so those numbers are impressive. Verizon is about to pick it up November 18th as the Vortex, so expect those numbers to grow. LG is very happy right now.

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on November 16th, 2010

Sony was the first to go all Google TV with its Internet TV, and now it looks like Samsung will be the second. We don’t have many details yet, just that Samsung is set to announce a new line of HDTVs that will offer integrated Google TV functionality.

The use of Intel processors is noted however, though we could have guessed as much. The announcement will be made in January at some big electronics show that you may have heard of.
