Verizon iPhone 4 gets a teardown

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on February 7th, 2011

As usual, the folks at iFixit have torn apart a new gadget. This time it is the Verizon iPhone 4. Of course they found the expected differences, but they also found that the phone has a slightly lighter battery than its counterpart, that the mechanical vibrator has been redesigned and moved from the top right corner to the bottom right of the phone and that the phone has a Qualcomm baseband chip.

The chip is a Qualcomm MDM660 chip that supports HSPA+ data rates up to 14.4 Mbps, and is the same chip used in the Droid Pro. So the chip technically supports both GSM and CDMA, although Apple has decided not to take advantage of that capability for whatever their reasons are.

Posted in Palm by Conner Flynn on February 6th, 2011

It actually hit Europe a few months back, but now it looks like we’ll finally see this webOS 2.0 phone in our neck of the woods. At least, according to a screenshot posted on precentral.net. The Verizon Palm Pre 2 product page was spotted by someone and it lists the Palm Pre 2 as having a February 17 launch date.

The phone will cost $100 with a 2-year contract. What with a launch date so close to the iPhone, and a rumored Bionic and XOOM release date, the Palm Pre may get lost entirely. Have you been waiting for this one?

Verizon breaks first day sales record with iPhone 4 pre-orders in just two hours

Posted in Verizon by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2011

Well, that was quick. It took Verizon just two hours of having the iPhone 4 available for pre-order to break its all-time record for first day sales of a single device. That’s even more impressive when you consider the fact that it only opened up pre-orders to its own subscribers, and it started at the dead of night.

This means that between 3AM and 5AM yesterday morning, more people ordered the iPhone 4 than Verizon has been able to sell on any full product launch day. We don’t have actual numbers, but it is obviously a lot.

Visa begins iPhone ‘iWallet’ payment tests in Europe

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on February 1st, 2011

We still need to carry around our credit cards in our wallets, so why not turn your handset into an e-wallet? Might as well. That’s what Visa Europe has in mind with the first commercial deployment of its iPhone payments App.

NFC-capable iPhones should be on their way later this year and the AAPL intends to look into ways for merchants to obtain a cheap and easy set-up for payment kiosks so that mobile payments can be easily handled with the proper infrastructure in place. This iPhone payment system requires users to use an add-on device before making a payment, but the iPhone 5 may have a built-in e-wallet if the rumors turn out to be true.

Woman caught at Airport smuggling 44 iPhones in her clothes

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on January 24th, 2011

The iPhone is a hot commodity even after all this time. Apple is making a ton of money on it, smugglers too. When they can get away with smuggling the goods anyway. An Israeli women was caught at Ben-Gurion International Airport, while attempting to smuggle 44 iPhone 4 smartphones under her clothes. Apparently they were everywhere, including her stockings.

The woman, who is in her 60s, was returning from London when one of the airport’s full-body scanners detected the load of smartphones that she was hiding under a traditional Georgian outfit. Officials had also noticed that she appeared to be walking with difficulty, which is what made them notice her in the first place.
