LED Dragonfly streetlamp with a built in camera

Posted in LED by Conner Flynn on April 16th, 2009

LED Dragonfly streetlamp with a built in cameraWhen was the last time you saw a streetlamp as unique as this one? It’s cool just the way it is, but when you realize that all four wings have LEDs in them, you see it’s true potential. Not just as art, but as a crime prevention tool as well thanks to an attached camera.

It lights up the night streets and keeps a watchful eye on those below. There’s also a sea gull and butterfly as well. They were developed by a Korean company and can be found across Seoul and soon in Tokyo as well.

Eye Lamp is watching you watch it

Eye Lamp is watching you watch itThis eye lamp is creepy in a Sci-Fi, the-wall-is-alive kind of way. It’s the kind of functional wall art that will have you waxing philosophic. Are you looking at your lamp or is it looking at you? And if the eye lamp is closed so that it can’t see you, do you still exist? Mostly this concept lamp is just cool as hell and unsettling. It’s made of polished metal and shines light when it’s open.

It’s the kind of thing that Gods speak to people through. Will it require a sacrifice? What bad things will it make you do, so that it may join the world of the living? The all seeing thing even has a dimmer light, which is just the “lids” closing partially. And that just makes it looks creepier.

The Steampunk eye-Pod

Posted in iPod by Conner Flynn on March 13th, 2009

The Steampunk eye-PodClearly inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and created using the first generation iPod nano, this victorian eye-Pod by Doctor Grymm will have you doing a double take. All of the functionality of the iPod remains intact, and the eye-Pod can even be worn on the wrist using a leather cuff, or placed on its custom Victrola dock, made of a brass lamp and bicycle parts.

Forget the scroll wheel, all seeing eyeballs are more user friendly. The base features a Victrola horn that acts as a speaker. To charge the eye-Pod, a USB cable concealed under the base is retracted, or you can use an AC plug.

Alien Abduction lamp

Posted in Lamps by Conner Flynn on March 8th, 2009

Alien Abduction lampThere are few things cooler or more awesome than seeing a cow being lifted into a flying saucer. Though the cow may disagree. Haven’t witnessed this with your own eyes in the night sky? Here’s the next best thing.

The antenna on top is the on/off switch. It comes in a plain version with just the saucer and light ray and you can also get the more humorous cow abducting edition. The Alien Abduction Lamp is in the functional prototype stage and not yet available, sadly. Hopefully soon as I know the creator has been at it for some time.

Rubik’s Cube lamp is a puzzling light source

Posted in Lamps by Conner Flynn on December 28th, 2008

Rubik’s Cube lamp is a puzzling light sourceThe frustrating 80s puzzle we all grew up on makes for a cool light source. The Rubik’s Cube Light lamp by Eric Pautz is yet another variation on the popular cube. What’s cool about this one is that the light shines through and creates many colorful patterns.

If you already have the Rubiks cube alarm clock, you’d be remiss if this lamp doesn’t turn your eye. The gadget is available in two versions, color and transparent. The colored version reflects the colors that make the puzzle so popular and can display it scrambled and unscrambled. For a minimalist approach, there’s a transparent cube, which gives off a clear white light.

T3 Mobile Defender: The future of crowd control

T3 Mobile Defender: The future of crowd control
Sure, this scooter looks silly. And the idea that it could frighten you with a helmet wearing officer riding it seems silly as well. You would be wrong. The T3 Mobile Defender is something that should worry you. It comes equipped with a powerful non-lethal air gun that could kill you dead if it hit you in the head. So, in order to avoid such a scene, the gun is equipped with a holographic sight system that makes it super accurate.

An eyepiece shows a red target dot, which is transmitted to a monitor, then to the gun. Barry Lamperd, the creator, says that as long as the holographic sight is on target, you can’t miss. That’s easy to say from his perspective. I hope he’s right, because they plan to sell the scooter to the US Army for crowd control situations. (In Iraq? Or are they expecting us to get uppity?) Expect to see it cruising your neighborhood before too long as well.

Project-a-Phone relieves mobile phone eye strain

Project-a-Phone ICD-1300Project-a-Phone – you know, like Toss-a-Tomato – unveiled today a device which lets you display a live image of a phone screen on a computer so you can do various things to it. The ICD-1300 is priced at around $295.

The Project-a-Phone ICD-1300, which is actually a lower cost sibling to the equally obscure ICD-5000, is designed to work with virtually any mobile device. It clamps onto the phone and “delivers a live video feed of the screen image to a PC through a USB cable.” Included Windows software lets you “record video and audio, takes still images individually or in a programmed sequence, and can display multiple screens simultaneously.”
