Qualcomm Renames Its Snapdragon Processors

Posted in Processors by Reuben Drake on August 3rd, 2011

Qualcomm has announced a new naming scheme for its Snapdragon processors. The idea is to make it easier for consumers to understand what is powering their device. Now Qualcomm Snapdragon processors will be known as S1,S2, S3 and S4. The higher the number the faster the processor.

That should keep things simple for those who have a hard time keeping track. The S4 processors will encompass Qualcomm’s new range of Quad-Core processors which have yet to be launched, while the S1 range will include processors designed for mass market smartphones.

RIM Cutting 2,000 Jobs

Posted in BlackBerry by Conner Flynn on July 25th, 2011

Sad news for folks working at RIM. Research In Motion has announced that they will be cutting 2,000 jobs. That’s about 10 percent of their workforce. They will also be moving some of their executives to different positions in the company.

It’s part of a streamlining at RIM and anyone who looked at the situation would have seen it coming. The company has struggled to compete with Google’s Android OS and Apple’s iOS devices, and has been losing its smartphone sales share for awhile.

Doctor Who Tardis USB Hub

Posted in USB by Reuben Drake on July 21st, 2011

Doctor Who fans will love this USB hub. It features a flashing lantern on top and Tardis sound effects. You may not find the Doctor and his companion inside, but it will prove very useful sitting on your desk.

It will cost you about £23. Hopefully it won’t suddenly de-materialize and go on it’s own adventure, but if it does I’m sure it will be back soon. After all, Earth seems to be home base for the Doctor these days.

Android trash can robot

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on July 17th, 2011

We aren’t sure what it is about the Android robot, but he’s just so adorable. Even as a trash can. You could probably build your own if you have a spare trash can. This one was made by a Taiwanese guy who loves Android.

It has LED eyes, movable “arms” and “legs” and you can control it with a remote, and rotate the joystick to spin it 360 degrees. Hopefully we won’t see an army of these on our streets anytime soon.

Play World of Warcraft for free up to level 20

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on June 29th, 2011

If you haven’t been bit by the WOW bug yet, Blizzard is hoping to entice you by allowing you to play unrestricted up to level 20 before the game starts asking for money. At that point you can choose to ditch your character and all that hard work, or pay $20 for the full game along with the Burning Crusade expansion which ups your level cap to 70 and opens Outlands, and the Blood Elf and Draenei races.

Also, the Burning Crusade expansion is completely free to everyone who has the game and hasn’t already bought it. Seems like a good time to get into WOW.

Burg 5 phone watch

Posted in Watches by Reuben Drake on June 29th, 2011

Dick Tracy has had a phone watch for years. Now you can too. The Burg 5 Watch allows you to slip a SIM card inside and make and receive phone calls for 60 minutes at a time. It comes in Royal Blue, Lipstick Red, Jet Black, Baby Pink and Apple White. Around the outside of the dial are buttons numbered one to nine along with a call button and dismiss button. The SIM card slips into the side of the watch.

It also has a built-in microphones and speakers, but since there is no display you will have to be able to remember every phone number you want to dial. At least the speaker calls out the incoming phone number for you so you have some idea of who is calling. It can be yours for £99.99.

Star Wars Operation

Posted in Sci-Fi by Conner Flynn on June 27th, 2011

Remember the old Operation game. The funny bone was the hardest to get and I can still hear that buzzer! Now Hasbro is launching a new edition of the popular board game, but they have switched the red-nosed guy for R2-D2.

The game can be pre-ordered now for $27, and it will ship in September. Jawas are no longer the only guys who get to operate on droids. I wonder what R2′s hardest part to remove is.

Razor made of meteorite costs $100K

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on June 21st, 2011

As far as I’m concerned the only person who needs a razor made of meteorites that costs $100K is Superman and then only if the meteorites are not from Krypton. Well, they’ve made one anyway. The Zafirro razor is an Iridium Razor available in a limited edition.

99 pieces in all. They cost a hundred thousand Dollars apiece. Why? Because Iridium is extremely rare and expensive. The metal is so dense that they say it can survive a drop into molten lava. I’ll stick with something cheaper.
