Hands on with WickedLasers Spyder II GX

Posted in Review by Darrin Olson on March 28th, 2009

WickedLasers Spyder II GXWe’ve gotten our hands on some pretty cool and powerful lasers in the past, but never one of quite this magnitude. If you were wondering if there really is a difference between laser pointers, or if there is a difference between a $300 laser and a $1700 laser; well we’re here to tell you that there is.

From the time we opened the box of the Spyder II GX we could tell that this one meant business. The Spyder II is another green laser with a beam that can be seen from miles and miles away, literally. It’s powered by a special single LI-ION 18650 rechargeable battery (the device comes with 2 of them and a charger) and is housed in a military grade, water resistant case. It operates by a rubber toggle switch in the back that keeps it on until you press it again, unlike the Elite Series which requires you to hold it to keep the laser on.

Trek up your desk with this 3 in 1 speaker

Trek up your desk with this 3 in 1 speakerBack in October we told you about this cool looking retro speaker that sports Star Trek looks and gives you 3 gadgets in one. Speaker, 4 USB ports, and a clock. We had a chance to check one out in person recently. The good news is that it looks just as awesomely Trek in person. The design is really cool and you can easily see this on the set of the original Star Trek.

As soon as you power it up, the one thing that hits you is how bright the LED lights are. Blindingly bright. Almost annoyingly so. It will bother some people, while others won’t mind, since having a good looking hub on your desk is the trade-off. The lights do make it look more Sci-Fi if you have that kind of decor. The clock is pretty cool. No problems there. And as a hub it does it’s job.

Gold-plated Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

Gold-plated Mercedes-Benz C63 AMGIt’s nice to know that some people are having some fun living it up in this recession, while the rest of us count and sort our pennies. This is a gold-mirror-finish Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG from the Bling on Wheels Show, at the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai. It’s just plain crazy like everything else in Dubai.

If you drive this thing during the day, everyone will know where you are thanks to the trail of innocent onlookers who were blinded by the light bouncing off it. No word on how much it cost the owner to completely bling this thing out.

Ford announces new self-parking technologySelf-parking automobiles aren’t new, but Ford’s system, which is part of the company’s new power steering technology, will work on hills and uses sensors to monitor blind spots and notify the driver of approaching traffic. This new auto-parking technology debut on the 2010 Lincoln MKS sedan and Lincoln MKT luxury crossover vehicle.

The fancy new power steering uses the vehicle’s battery instead of it’s hydraulic system, which improves fuel economy and reduces carbon emissions. It should be showing up in almost ninety percent of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles by 2012.

Webcam equipped headphones put eyes over your ears

Webcam equipped headphones put eyes over your earsSeems like we have webcams in everything these days. They’re in everything and they are everywhere. It must have occurred to someone that the one place they missed was our ears. Which is a strange place for webcams, as we usually use them for other’s faces.

That’s what makes this so odd. This headphone/webcam combo will show you everything that is on your side. Maybe designer Andy Kurovets is just really paranoid. Maybe he has enemies that use his blind spots to their advantage. But chances are he just wanted to look like some fashion forward Sci-Fi dude.

Silicone Touch: An iPhone case for the blind

Silicone Touch: An iPhone case for the blindThe iPhone has never really been a friendly device for the blind, so this case designed by Bruno Fosi is fairly impressive. The Silicone Touch covers the iPhone’s screen and features a selection of bas-relief buttons that correspond to menu items in a custom app.

This lets the visually impaired access all of the phone’s functions, even multi-touch and finger flick scrolling. None of the phone’s functions are compromised. It’s just a concept at the moment, but this is one that we hope will see the light of day very soon.

Intelligent Cutlery does more then just stab, scoop & cut

Intelligent Cutlery does more then just stab, scoop & cutIf you figured your kitchen utensils were safe from a tech upgrade, you were wrong. The IC3 concept would give your cutlery a computerized body able to hold three interchangeable eating tools: fork, spoon and knife.

The fork wont just stab blindly, it will also analyze the composition of the food, reporting details on fat, protein, and sugars. The spoon will measure weight with the knife acting as a thermometer. All of this information will be compiled into a detailed report so that you know exactly what you’re eating. Screw that. Who wants some nanny telling them what’s good for them. These utensils can go fork themselves.

A hinge at 10 o’clock gives easy access to the dial. And it also happens to look good for those who are seeing it from afar. No word yet on pricing and availability.

iTunes to be more accessible to the blind

iTunes to be more accessible to the blindApple has reached an agreement with the Massachusetts attorney general’s office and the National Federation of the Blind and they will make the iTunes service more accessible to the blind. It will be called iTunes U and that area of the iTunes Store will feature educational content from colleges and universities for the blind from December 31st onward. That’s just the beginning.

Apple will also continue toward providing full accessibility of iTunes before the June 30, 2009 deadline. To top it all off Apple will be donating $250,000 to the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind. Nice move by Apple, because like the new windows campaign suggests, not all users come from the same mold.

Metallic Silver DS on the way

Metallic Silver DS on the wayWe had thought that Nintendo had ran out of color ideas for the DS in North America, but there was at least one we hadn’t thought about. A Metallic Silver DS so you can look at your reflection now and then. Just like the one you own, just shinier and able to blind others on sunny days.

The Metallic Silver variety has been in Japan and Europe for almost a year, so I guess the big N figured it was time we had a crack at it. It should be available in all it’s shining glory on Sept. 7.

Windows 3.1 for your home

Windows 3.1 for your homeFeeling a tad nostalgic for Windows 3.1 after some Vista crashes? Then this is for you. It’s an actual Windows Window. Just gaze outside and relive the good old days of Bill Gates’ fortune and your old 286 PC. These conceptual window coverings give your home large Windows 3.1 screens. You’ll notice in the second picture, the guy is battling with the Blue Screen of Death via the scroll bar!

As far as we can tell these aren’t ready for production just yet, and that’s probably a good thing. Because I think most everyone prefers Windows XP. These would go great with the web 2.0 blinds.

Smart contact lenses may prevent blindness

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on August 10th, 2008

Smart contact lenses may prevent blindnessAccording to the World Health Organization, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Glaucoma is basically a build-up of pressure in the eye. It can not be permanently cured. Now researchers at UC Davis have designed a special kind of contact lens that can measure pressure build up in the eye and they’ll even give you a warning if anything is wrong.

These smart contact lenses use an organic polymer called PDMS that acts like a pressure sensor. UC Davis says that they will start clinical trials of these lenses in humans very soon. But this isn’t the end of the breakthrough, they’re also working up to one that will dispense medication automatically.
