Philips 52-inch 3D display is pure ecstasy for couch potatoes everywhere

Philips 52-inch 3D TVAt CES in January I wandered over to the NVIDIA meeting area and spent some time in the little gaming area NVIDIA had set up. Hands down the coolest thing on display was a big screen 3D TV that was being used to play some Need For Speed Pro Street. Trust me 3D rocks so hard for gaming you will want it.

The catch with the system NVIDIA was using is that you had to wear these geeky glasses straight out of the 1980’s to get the 3D effect. Philips announced a new 52-inch 3D monitor today that is auto-stereoscopic meaning you don’t have to wear glasses to view in 3D. Sign me up!

Alienware Area-51 ALX DesktopWhen it comes to Alienware one of the first things that always jumps to my mind are seriously expensive computers. For the computer gamers out there that just don’t want to bother with building their own gaming rigs, Alienware has been a popular alternative—so long as the budget allows.

We took a look at the ALX desktop in March when it was first offered with quad graphics. Alienware announced today that it has updated its Area-51 ALX desktop and was re-launching the line. The centerpiece of the updated rig is the availability of the industry’s first overclocked Intel QX9770 running stable at 4GHz available direct from the maker.

Vivitar DVR565HD digital camcorder
If you’ve been looking for a cheap digital video camera for posting YouTube videos, there is the JVC Everio, but some might find it a bit too large to carry around on a daily basis, and maybe you’re looking for something cheaper still. The Flip camcorders a favorite, but they might have some competition with the latest Vivitar model.

The DVR565HD can record 30fps 720P “HD” videos in MPEG4 or H.264 directly to an SD card. (Up to 4GB cards are supported.) It can also apparently play 1080i videos and can connect directly to an HDTV with an included HDMI cable. It won’t be available for a few more weeks, but Target currently has it listed for just $129.99, which makes it pretty tempting.

Dell XPS 730 gaming desktop gets ceramic cooling option

Posted in Dell by Shane McGlaun on May 1st, 2008

Dell XPS 730When it comes to PC gaming the hobby is far from cheap. This is one of the main points console gamers like to harp on when lauding the supposed superiority of consoles over PCs for gaming. However, PC gamers can all agree that with the right PC, graphics on the same game are typically much better on PC than on a console.

Dell announced its latest XPS gaming desktop today and we can just get this out of the way up front, it’s not cheap. Base models start at $3,999 and if you want the slick and high tech liquid ceramic cooling you are looking at a starting price of $4,999. For that amount of money you get some nice components.

LED Spa looks like alien cocoon, no slime

LED Spa looks like alien cocoon, no slime
I can only assume that the women inside eat their way out once they transform into some sort of alien face hugger. Where’s Ripley when you need her? Despite it’s otherworldly looks, spas have now begun using LEDs as an effective tool in spa capsules. The Med Spa Clinic at Tunbridge Wells are claiming the world’s first usage of LEDs in a whole capsule. I’m claiming them the creepiest.

The Oxy-LED Light Spa Capsule will treat your entire body, helping you lose weight. You’ll be hit with LED light in wavelengths ranging from 625 to 980 nm, which will cause some sort of intense physical stimulation. The treatment can be combined with other spa treatments, like the more traditional dry thermal heat and vibratory massages.

Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600MhzI am a big fan of computer hardware and when NVIDIA launched its new gear a few weeks back including the 9800 GX2, 9800 GTX and the 790i Ultra mainboards I was very excited. I was especially glad to see NVIDIA finally put out a DDR3 compatible mainboard.

Anyone that has prices DDR3 Ram knows that the stuff is expensive. Kingston says its 1600MHz HyperX DDR3 is designed to be economically priced.

Rechargeable outdoor candles

Rechargeable outdoor candles
These somewhat realistic looking outdoor candles are made from silicone and use an LED light bulb to simulate the natural flickering effect of an actual flame.

There are actually a few benefits to using fake candles. They are safer, you won’t get that nasty smell when you blow them out, and you can still set a nice romantic mood while at the same time impressing her with tech. And who knows where that will lead. On a full charge the fake candles can last for about 12 hours. You can get a set of 4 with charger for $89.95.

Posted in Bluetooth by Darrin Olson on February 15th, 2008

Princeton Bluetooth adapter measures under an inch long but had a 300 foot rangeAlthough the picture might make it look bigger, this little Bluetooth adapter from Tokyo’s Princeton corporation actually measures just 23mm x 4.5mm x 14mm. It connects via USB 2.0 your computer to give you a wireless Bluetooth connection with a range of around 300 feet.

We’re thinking that this one might still be slightly longer than the MOGO Bluetooth adapter but without a doubt kicks its but in range. The Princeton adapter has the fast Bluetooth speed of 3Mbps and is expected to hit shelves sometime next month for ¥2,980 (around $28).

Sony Ericsson W980 with Walkman On Top

Sony Ericsson W890 Walkman with 8GB memorySony Ericsson dropped a new Walkman mobile phone/media player to the market today with the W980, featuring 8GB of internal memory, included headphones and something the company is calling “Walkman On Top”.

The new Walkman On Top is a lot like it sounds. SE put the controls and the display of current playing tracks on the front of the device allowing complete navigation and viewing without having to open up the handset, hence the name “on top”. The new Walkman also comes with built-in stereo speakers and FM transmitter letting users share their tunes directly or through an FM radio on a home or car stereo. Sony Ericsson also wanted to make sure that listening to music alone was clear with quality sound and threw in Stereo Portable Handsfree HPM-77 headset. The headset allows listening to music and the ability to take calls hands free.

Flexible PSP hand-grip for serious remote gaming

Flexible handgrip controller mount for the Sony PSPJapan’s Vis-a-Vis has a new PSP controller accessories do give you a better grip on your PSP or PSP lite. The “Flexible Hand Grip Pad Advance” mounts onto the back of the PSP to give a hand-hold similar to that of a Dual-Shock controller to avoid any of that cramping up during hours of remote play.

The flexible handgrip appears to still keep access to all the controls including the power button and Wi-Fi enable switch on the sides, and when it slides apart for use it even exposes the UMD tray on the back. When not in use the grip slides together to be a little more compact, but is still a pretty bulky accessory compared to the PSP itself.

Satin Silver Playstation 3 in JapanNow that the U.S. might be getting the white model of the PS3 the folks in Japan always need to have something a little more and have added a Satin Silver Playstation 3 model to the lineup. This makes a total of 3 colors available in the original black, white and now the most recent silver.

This model is also the 40GB version with the lack of PS2 game playing capabilities, card reader and fewer USB ports, but nevertheless seems to be helping out sales for Sony. The satin silver model will retail for ¥39,980 (about $374 USD). Sony will also release to Japan a matching DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller (not included) which will be in the same satin silver color. Sony has the controller retailing at 5,500 yen (about $52 USD).
