Android-powered LG C710 Aloha smartphone

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on April 1st, 2010

Keep in mind that this is unconfirmed, but rumor is that LG is planning an Android-powered phone called the C710 Aloha. The rumored specs certainly have us drooling and we are ready to believe this one since there was recently approval of a device called the C710 by the WiFi Alliance.

Some of those rumored specs include an 800 x 480 display, Wi-Fi 802.11n, Full QWERTY keyboard along with GPRS, UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA connectivity. Sounds like a good Droid alternative.

ASUS introduces O!Play HD2 networked media player with USB 3.0

Posted in Media Players by Conner Flynn on March 3rd, 2010

ASUS has added a third model to their O!Play mediaplayer range, the ASUS O!Play HD2. Sadly we don’t have any information. Just the name, with no specs. However the photo reveals USB, eSATA and various forms of memory card reader.

Assuming that the O!Play HD2 is similar to the two models that have gone before it, we would guess 1080p HD video output via HDMI with networking support, either ethernet or 802.11n like the O!Play Air HDP-R3. Hopefully we will have full specs soon.

Mvix unveils new Solido 802.11n adapter with 5dbi antenna

Posted in Adapters by Shane McGlaun on February 24th, 2010

I have a computer upstairs in my house that is in my son’s room. He likes to get online, read about Pokémon, and play games. The problem is that the normal USB adapter for the wireless network lacks the signal strength for a consistent connection.

MvixUSA has announced a new WiFi adapter called the Solido MS-811x Wireless-N USB adapter with 5dbi antenna. That big antenna is adjustable for the best signal strength and the device connects to your PC with a USB port.

Infinitec infinite USB memory device

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on February 18th, 2010

Infinitec’s new flash drive is one pretty unique flash drive. It’s a USB stick that packs an 802.11n module which can create an ad hoc network through any device’s USB port. Even though it looks like just a flash drive. Put simply, it will let you stream media to devices that don’t like you streaming media.

For example, inserted in a DVD player, you don’t have to worry about the player’s supported network standards or your PC’s sharing settings. All you have to do is set the Infinitec stick anywhere from 1GB to 1TB+, then load MPEG4s right from the stick, streamed from your PC which is loaded with accompanying software. It will work with anything with a USB port, including game consoles.

Netgear MBRN3300 shares 3G connection with the home

Posted in Netgear by Conner Flynn on February 9th, 2010

Netgear’s MBRN3300 comes from a collaboration with Ericsson. The unusual device can use an internal 3G modem which includes HSPA+ at about 20Mbps, while sharing that link via 802.11n Wi-Fi or through one of the four 100Mbps Ethernet ports.

Owners can also switch off the 3G, Wi-Fi or both when not in use. The MBRN3300 is for households where regular cable, DSL or fiber isn’t available, and for those who rely on just mobile local networks. You can even charge it up in the car with the optional car charger and a battery pack. Nothing on pricing yet, but Netgear primarily intends the router as an option for carriers.

The BearExtender n3 gives you more Wi-Fi range

Posted in Wi-Fi by Conner Flynn on January 18th, 2010

The BearExtender n3 has a few advantages over other WiFi extenders. It’s cheap, it works great, and most important of all, it’s legal. This external WiFi adapter for Macs costs just $45 and was developed by Rolan Saekow, a Berkeley grad who wanted access to the campus “Airbears” network from wherever he happened to be.

Looks like it works great too. TUAW’s testing yielded stronger signals and higher throughput when they used the BearExtender over internal WiFi. The downside, if you consider it a downside, is that the BearExtender runs only on the 2.4GHz band. It doesn’t give you the option of a 5Ghz 802.11n network.

eStarling TouchConnect digital frame is very cool

Posted in Digital Photo Frames by Shane McGlaun on January 8th, 2010

I am a sucker for a cool digital photo frame. The things keep me from spending time printing the hoards of digital photos that my wife seems to always be taking. eStarling has unveiled its latest digital photo frame at CES and it is very cool.

The frame is called the TouchConnect and uses all touch controls with no remote. The screen is 10.2-inches and it has a 16:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 800 x 480. Onboard memory for the frame is 2GB and it has a SD card slot as well. Firmware updates can be received over the air and the frame can be connected to its own Gmail account.

LG BD590, the First Blu-ray Player with an Integrated Hard Drive

Posted in Blu-ray by Conner Flynn on January 6th, 2010

LG’s new Blu-ray player won’t rip and store your movies, but the BD590 is still pretty decent. The BD590 will store your music, photos, downloaded movies, rip CDs etc, via USB or Ethernet port, though apparently not through its 802.11n Wi-Fi connection for some reason.

Unfortunately, no DVD and Blu-ray archiving. Which isn’t surprising for legal reasons. Anyway 250GB isn’t ideal for ripping Blu-Ray movies.

Posted in Toshiba by Conner Flynn on January 6th, 2010

Toshiba’s ZX900 Cell TV claims to have 143 times the processing power over existing televisions. Net TV applications include Netflix, VUDU, CinemaNow and Pandora, along with 802.11n WiFi and 1TB of HDD for streaming and storage.

It also boasts video phone capability, but it’s we aren’t sure if it has a built-in webcam or if you bring your own USB. The Japanese version has eight tuners, but that has been removed from this US version. These displays use KIRA2 LED-backlit displays with 512 zones of localized dimming, as well as built-in Wireless HD.
