Posted in Sci-Fi by Conner Flynn on October 20th, 2010

This may be the coolest action figure ever and it isn’t a man, a robot or an alien. It’s the 2001: A Space Odyssey Monolith action figure. A perfect scale model of the original monolith from the 60′s film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Zero points of articulation, but it kicks the ass of all other figures. You can now own your very own non-posable 2001: A Space Odyssey Monolith action figure for just $12.99 from ThinkGeek. Pose some monkeys around it or have some astronauts dig it up on the moon’s surface.

Toshiba unveils Lumileo P100 pocket projector

Posted in Toshiba by Shane McGlaun on September 3rd, 2010

Business users who do a lot of presentations know that schlepping a normal projector around the city or an airport is no fun. The new glut of small pocket and pico projectors coming to the market promise a lot more portability, but they give up a lot in performance.

Toshiba has unveiled a new pocket projector called the Lumileo P100 that is your typical small projector. It measures 116 x 50 x 18mm and weighs 96g with the battery inside. The small projector only has 14 lumens and needs a dark room to throw its maximum 65-inch image.

LaCie shows off tiny MosKeyto flash drive

Posted in LaCie by Shane McGlaun on September 3rd, 2010

I have a bunch of flash drives lying around my office and they are all fat drives that block USB ports and need to be plugged into a port with a lot of room around it. This is a huge pain, especially if you are on a netbook or notebook with only a few ports.

LaCie has debuted a new flash drive called the MosKeyto that is tiny and looks more like one of those nano receivers for wireless mice and keyboards than a flash drive. The little drive measures 21 x 16 x 10mm and weighs 10g. You can plug the tiny drive into the USB port and just leave it if you want.

Kids CyberNet Station is an expensive AIO computer

Posted in Computers by Shane McGlaun on January 19th, 2010

I have on more than one occasion thought about going to an AIO computer that is quieter than my normal desktop. My machine has so much gear crammed inside that the drone of the fans can drive you crazy some days. If you are looking for an AIO to give to a kid as their first computer, a company called Kid Computers has one.

The catch is that the machine sells for nearly $2,000, which many parents will consider a significant stretch for a first computer. A $500 to $1000 AIO from another manufacturer with netbook innards would be more appropriate in most cases.

Samsung announces two new netbooks

Posted in Samsung by Shane McGlaun on April 24th, 2009

samsungn120-sbNetbook sales are booming as consumers buy the low cost machines in droves. The only real issue that goes along with using a netbook rather than a full notebook is that the keyboards tend to be smaller on netbooks and the machines lack the power that full notebooks have.

Samsung has announced a pair of new netbooks called the N110 and the N120. The two machines share some of the same features including an Intel Atom N270 CPU running at 1.6GHz, Windows XP Home, 1GB of RAM, a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 LED backlit LCD, and a 160GB HDD.

Pip-Boy 3000 iTouch

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on April 6th, 2009

This is the coolest thing we’ve seen all day around here. Someone gutted one of those plastic Pip-Boy 3000 watches and installed an iPod Touch in it. It’s a super clever mod for wandering the wasrelands of the apocalypse.

An actual Pip-Boy 3000 program for the iPod Touch can’t be far behind. Looks like the program he’s showing off is a bunch of stills in the iPod’s photo program. Someone needs to take this idea and make a real honest to god Pip-Boy 3000.

Bed Bunker: Under-the-mattress storage for the paranoid

Posted in Security by Conner Flynn on March 26th, 2009

Bed Bunker: Under-the-mattress storage for the paranoidThere’s a lot to be paranoid about these days. UFOs are abducting humans and cows at an alarming rate. The near collapse of our nation’s banking system. Bigfoot. Shadow governments. The Illuminati. E-coli. North Korea. Bird flu. Grocery store muzak. Falling satellites. Nuclear weapons. Just to name a few.

I don’t have to tell you what it all means. It means that it’s time to start shoving stuff under your mattress. Money. Guns. Medicine. Powdered food rations. Maybe a back-up gaming console. Everyone knows that under the mattress is the most secure place for all your stuff. You sleep there don’t you? You’ll be safe as long as you have your stash of important stuff.
