e-Volve gadget shoulder holster

Posted in Apparel by Conner Flynn on November 14th, 2008

e-Volve gadget shoulder holsterThe e-Volve gadget shoulder holster evokes images of all those 70’s TV detectives packing some heat under a cheap suit. But somehow this just doesn’t look half as cool. Will this awkward bit of fashion usher in a slew of crappy “Gadget Detective” shows, complete with crap theme music and vintage intro? Man I hope so. “Others use guns. He uses gadgets”. Can you see it? Kind of like Beretta, Kojak and MacGuyver all in one.

This Shoulder Holster is made to carry multiple gadgets and help you get all that clutter out of your pockets. It’s fully-adjustable and form-fitting with small and large sized quick-access pouches for personal electronics. The holster has several straps to keep it securely in place. The e-Volve shoulder holster is already available and retails for $79.95, though its currently on sale for the holidays at $69.95.

Xentex laptop knows when to fold em

Xentex laptop knows when to fold em
Much like Kenny Rogers, the Xentex laptop knows when to fold em. It knows when to walk away and when to run. It wasn’t satisfied with simply opening and closing. Oh no. It can fold twice for portability. That means that the system has two 13.3″ screens that can independently swivel so you can share your stuff with your friends sitting opposite you.

Together, the screens combine to measure 19.5″ across for a huge display. Inside it’s got an 850MHz Athlon processor and 128MB of memory. It’s kind of like having a Rubik’s computer. It can be found on ebay and as of this writing it’s at $405.00 with 11 bids, 6 days to go.

iWTF: The deceptive iPhone scale

Posted in Scales, iPhone, iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on January 21st, 2008

Phoney iPhone scale
Here is an odd knock off product that defies reason. A fake iPhone that’s really a scale. I guess it would be perfect for the “iDealer” in your neighborhood to weigh his wares on this scale, while having it look like the latest high-tech gadget when the police storm the door.

Upon closer inspection, it’s easy to see that somebody did a rework of the interface in MS Paint. Look for this to show up in new episodes of COPS, sitting by the dope. The other dope will be handcuffed and incoherent wearing the standard grimy white undershirt.

Garmin Forerunner 405 tracks workouts, uploads wirelessly

Posted in CES 2008, Exercise Gadgets, GPS, Garmin, Watches by Darrin Olson on January 7th, 2008

Garmin 405 Forerunner GPS watch tracks routes while running and uploads to your computer without wiresGarmin has a new exercise gadget debuting at CES this year called the Forerunner 405, designed for runners to aid in training and track routes. The new 405 is also a little more stylish than previous models with similar functionality, keeping the size to a minimum so the gadget doesn’t look like such a gaudy chunk of electronics on your wrist.

The Forerunner 405 is GPS enabled and allows outdoor runners to keep track of their speed, distance, heart rate and location through the watch. This model also features a cool new bezel around the display that lets users navigate and change settings on the watch by simply tapping it and sliding their finger around the metal circle.

Vista tops PCWorld disappointments list

Posted in Vista, Windows by Darrin Olson on December 17th, 2007

Windows Vista tops PC World top 15 tech dissapointments“No Wow, No How: Windows Vista” titles the number 1 spot on PCWorld’s list of the 15 biggest tech disappointments of the year and we can’t really disagree. Heck, I personally upgraded a machine from XP to Vista earlier this year and was unable to use Internet Explorer on it for months, and I still cannot get Windows Media Player to work correctly with MPEGs.

Just as PCWorld had pointed out there are a lot of cool things in Vista that are an improvement over the previous OS, but it just “…isn’t all that good.” The article goes on to note that hardware incompatibilities seemed to be over the top early on, it runs slower than XP and the new user account controls caused more irritation than a feeling of safety. PCWorld could not finish up the article without at least mentioning that the fastest notebook they tested with Vista running on it was a MacBook. We also cannot refute that Vista will eventually have its dominate day in the sun, but it’s unfortunately not this day.

Multiple retailers to get Wiis this weekend

Posted in News, Wii by Darrin Olson on December 14th, 2007

Retailers including Best Buy expected to have Wii’s in stock this weekendWe get multiple requests here at the ‘Brick with people asking if we know where they can find a Wii console without taking it in the shorts on price, so we’re pretty excited to see some hope in the availability of the console from Nintendo before the year is out.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime announced the availability of rain checks for the Wii’s through Gamestop, and although getting one in January might be better than nothing at all there still might be a chance to get your hands on one yet this year. The Nintendo exec announced that seven national retailers should be putting Nintendo Wii consoles on shelves this weekend. The list of retailers include Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, Sears, Kmart, Toys R Us and Circuit City.

Opera Software files complaint over Microsoft browser

Posted in Legal, Microsoft, News, Opera Software by Darrin Olson on December 13th, 2007

Opera Software files complaint against Microsoft over web browserOpera Software has filed a legal complaint to the European Commission against Microsoft over the companies web browser and how it is packaged with the operating system. As you may or may not have noticed, the Internet Explorer browser that comes with the Windows operating system has become part of the OS, and can’t really be removed or uninstalled. Because of this Opera Software is complaining that the tie Microsoft has between the OS and its IE browser is illegal since it does not give competing browsers a chance on the highly dominate Windows OS. Opera is also saying that Microsoft is hindering interoperability by not following the commonly accepted web standards.

Opera is asking that Microsoft be forced to “unbundle” their web browser and operating system allowing other browsers, such as Opera’s, to be able to compete more fairly. They are also asking that Microsoft adhere to common Web standards so that developers creating hosted applications and web sites do not allow or need specific code written for viewing on Internet Explorer compared to other browsers.

Casio makes printing CD labels easier

Casio CW-E60 Title Printer

I never use labels. I’m in the habit of using a sharpie when I burn CDs. The problem is that my writing is terrible. Lucky for me I understand my chicken-scratch most of the time, but sometimes even I’m at a loss. Printing out labels is a hassle. So the Casio CW-E60 Title Printer looks perfect for me. We all want more professional looking CDs.

It features a 200 dpi print resolution and uses a thermal transfer ribbon to print the label on your disc. Plus it comes with easy to use software to design your labels. It will also let you choose from 8 different colored ribbons for your prints. The price isn’t too bad either at $60. Sure beats trying to decipher bad writing.

UMG to launch iTunes competitor with “free” music

Posted in News, UMG, iTunes by Darrin Olson on October 12th, 2007

Doug Morris of Universal Music is looking into an online service in competition with iTunesYou may remember back in early July when Universal Music Group (UMG) head Doug Morris decided not to renew a 2-year contract with iTunes, and instead provides content month-to-month on an “at will” basis. Reason particulars were not initially cited but generally revolved around how Jobs and iTunes put restrictions on how UMG could market their music.

It sounds like Jobs is far from hearing the last of Morris and Universal Music. According to a report today in BusinessWeek, the company is gearing up to launch an iTunes competing service of their own to be named “Total Music”. Morris and company isn’t looking into this venture lightly either. Aside from his own company Morris has also convinced BMG Music to join in, and is already having talks with Warner Music Group. Together the three companies music giants would have control of over 70% of all the music sold in the U.S., with Apple iTunes currently holding control of over 70% of the music sold online in the U.S.
